The Bad Drivers of Ontario Thread

If never seen sparks come from a struck fire hydrant. Water, but not sparks.

If you max screen the video window you can see it was a green electrical box that she hit. It caught on fire shortly after the video stopped.
You're right. I looked again full screen.

Wait for the final report. While gravel trucks are known to drive like they're running at a NASCAR event, passenger vehicle drivers aren't exactly known for considering the realities of physics, when maneuvering around them.

I can't leave my enclave without having to deal with the rock slingers coming in and out of the quarries on 5 west of 6N. They're all pricks, idiots, or some combination of the above for the most part.

I definitely agree with that, having almost been forced off the road more than once. I have also been the victim of people who change lanes and then hammer the brakes in passenger vehicles, in front of me, when I have a gravel truck directly behind me. I've seen transports make almost impossible moves to avoid turning a car into a frat boy's beer can. I live in Brampton. I don't put much of anything past the stupidity of the average driver.

No charges laid. Another police fail. A range rover tried to use the extra special dbag only lane and didn't fit.

If the construction crews didn't need the access why would they block traffic to get the guy out? If the guy was injured use the jaws of life to get him lifted out from where the roof used to be. The pieces of his car could be carried out later when traffic is light.

They get paid by the mile or run. Us city folk have to deal with cabbies. Think of them as gravel taxis.

Yesterday was a nightmare. There was WATER falling from the SKY at times on the drive home. I don't know how I made it.

I've been cut-off twice by gravel trucks pulling out of the quarry at Hockley Road / 5 Sideroad. There are two stop signs for the trucks, one at the quarry exit and a second on 5 Sideroad at Hockley. Most of these guys might stop at the first, but very few want to stop again and run through the gears once they have some momentum with a full load.

The first time it happened was on snow covered roads in the winter and I had the full ABS system helping my snow tires find some traction while I tried to avoid running into the drive wheels on the tractor unit. Friggin' idiot was completely oblivious to me even being on the road. The second time was not quite as bad, but still he failed to yield and it required evasive action on my part. Now I just expect them to blow through that second stop sign as I travel eastbound on Hockley Road.

I live in Markham, probably as bad as Brampton for cars, fortunately we don't have as many transports and gravel idiots.

Why are these two areas so bad is a discussion itself, but the fix is simple IMHO -- enforcement and education.

Markham is getting stupid. To stop bad outcomes, the are using a stupid number of controls. They dropped speed limits from 80 to 60@70 on rural arterial roads, added hundreds of street lights on the main roads, changed side street intersections from 2way to 4 way stops, and lately are eliminating right on red at major intersections.

The latest the thing I noticed is they de-synchronized traffic lights on 16th, a major east west road across the city. When it was synchronized, 48 to 404 took about 12 minutes, it's now 25 minutes.

Getting???

I moved from Wendake Beach to Scarborough to a place sight unseen. GF in TO picked it out. It was a compromise as she worked for VISA downtown and I was starting a job on Heritage @ McCowan. My insurance doubled. I asked the broker why. "You have to drive through Agincourt twice a day" (I was shocked he actually said that - but I did laugh). That was in 1992.

One of my coworkers was from Hong Kong. He joked about being the only Asian in the Agincourt/Markham area that could drive.

I thought insurance was based on mileage and where the vehicle was garaged. I didn't think they tracked your routes whether it be through BAMton or Asiancourt.

Everyone is a good driver. Stuff just keeps getting in their way.

They should take the time to actually view the results of traffic control methods like those. In my experience increasing the number of traffic lights and desychronization result in more people speeding to make the next light, or running amber and red lights. Reducing the speed limit just results in more people who are classed as speeders, not a reduction in speed.

As with most political action, it is far more about saying they are doing something than actually trying to implement positive change.

The low hanging fruit for carbon emissions is ditching the thousands of four way stops that shpuld never have been more than two way stops. No politician has ever considered that.

As I frequently can be heard to remark, "Governance by sound bite."

They're counting on technology to get around that simple issue. Suddenly cars stop running at stop signs and lights, instead if idling. Of course that doesn't help all of the older vehicles.

Even with an ev, stopping and restarting for no reason other than Karen on the corner wastes a bunch of energy.

EVs are a different matter. When they aren't moving, their main motors aren't using energy. They don't "idle" in the sense of a fossil fuel powered vehicle.

There's a bit of inertia loss which is partly countered by regeneration braking. If it was 100% efficient we would have perpetual motion
Still far more efficient than a fossil fuel powered vehicle when at rest, but still in use.
