And yet again, another DUMB truck driver

I don't understand why it is not mandated that all dump trucks are equipped with some safety/lockout mechanism that if the truck bed is raised more then 5 inches, the truck cannot travel more than 5km/hr, or if it rises during motion, the engine shuts off.

The government has mandated other safety system into new and old trucks, why cant they do it for these idiots?

Hell, as a first cut, put a horn in the cab (not a tiny buzzer or light, a proper car horn) that goes off when box is not seated and speed exceeds 5 or 10 km/h.

Hopefully the costs of these closures get passed to the truckers insurance but I highly doubt it. If they could account for the delays that 50k+ people experienced, the bill would start at seven figures. At that point, you don't even need laws changed, insurance companies would force the interlock before they would write a policy.

If I remember correctly and the stories that I heard are true.
The guy who smashed into the Burlington/Hamilton Skyway bridge about 10 years ago, eventually walked away with nothing. Although he was DUI.

Nothing electric. Just a lever that drops a shield over the windscreen when the box is up. Only seeing through a peep hole??? Check the box.

I like it because it's simple to install and check but Health and safety people would find issues. Trucks drive all the time with the box up when delivering loads. You can't impair driver vision during that operation. If the flag is big enough that you can't miss it on the highway, it probably is big enough to impair vision.

Fine
Install a mechanical boxing glove that will deliver a blow to the head.
No impaired vision. Just a wake up call.

The Burlington Bridge guy was DUI. Is there any system that over rides a drunken stupor?

Breathalyzer/ignition interlock required in every commercial vehicle? Simple and off-the-shelf parts. Adds a lot of cost for minimal benefit though.

Mandatory steering wheel spike could help. These crashes where they catch the box or pile into stopped traffic would avoid the expense of a trial that way. Crash into things and judgement is issued on the spot.

On new trucks they could require a speed limiter when the box is up. Limit speed to say 10 kph as an example. It allows the truck to be moved with the box up while not really ever reaching any kind of street speeds.

Of course how to (or to even do it) retrofit older trucks and will idiots disable it for whatever reason.... including it is broken or I want to go faster with the box up to impress the chicks.

Or maybe raise the training standards???

No perfect solution.

There are 1000 relatively simple solutions. You could interlock pto so you can only have it engaged in neutral or first gear, engage second or higher and something happens, bigger hammer (probably only minimally effective but no issues with retrofit), pipes across every site exit enforcing max height, etc.

I can't imagine this is a training issue. I have had zero training and I know not to drive with the *(&^(*&(*& box up.

Just install one of those backup beepers in the cab. If it's beeping, the box isn't locked.

$10 + in parts upgrade.

So's sociopathy.
Today I had someone make a left turn out of a business's driveway in front of me, on my right. Bad enough that they breached my right-of-way but there was also no left allowed out of that driveway. They had go more than 50 metres up the road before they could get on the proper side of the road. The driver was rather angry that I didn't get off the road to let them past. Can't show video because I'm driving a rental.

I've had that happen so often it doesn't even faze me anymore. Those mall entries and exits with the pork-chop island to encourage people to turn right only, together with the "No Left Turn" signage, mean absolutely nothing to someone who just needs to turn left.

In some cases it's almost comprehensible, because the island is barely visible. In this case there was a row of those plastic cones with reflective tape on them, down the middle of the road, and the only traffic was going against his desired direction of travel, so it felt like this was something this particular entitled idiot did on the regular.

My wife was making a right onto our street and the person behind her was honking because she wasn't going through fast enough. Was my wife supposed to run over the person walking their dog through the intersection?

It will get interesting if the pro bike advocates get Bloor Street made two traffic lanes. Adding two bike lanes leaves two traffic lanes and a left turn lane. There is no right turn lane so when the horde of students from the numerous local schools get out or arrive at intersections the right turning drivers have to wait. The buses behind them have to wait. The cars behind the buses have to wait. The ambulances, police cars or fire trucks behind the cars can use the left turn lane but it could already be grid locked with left turners and no way of cars backing out. With the buses being stalled in traffic they will fall behind schedule and take longer to load when they finally get to a bus stop. Following cars if not properly trained and patient may cause cross street gridlock.

Will the bicyclists passing the buses on the right stop behind the rearmost open door? Will they get into a snit if buses use their precious bike lane to off and on load passengers?

Will the 500 pounds (227 KG) e-bikers passing the buses on the right stop behind the rearmost open door or blow through at 24+ KPH. They have no mandated training or legal knowledge requirements or insurance or identification.

Fortunately everyone will be so happy with societal progress that they will smile and relax as the problem takes care of itself. (Puke)
