Road Rage on the 401, May 21, 2014

The second thing to consider is that most people, whether on 2 wheels or four, have a much higher opinion of their own ability than is deserved.

Amen, I vote this for post of the year thus far...and I'm man enough to admit I've been guilty of this hubris myself in the past.

I've had the odd vehicle approach me from behind at a high rate of speed while I was passing another vehicle. I either speed up to complete the pass or slow down and move over to let the other vehicle go ahead. It's not that difficult?!

However, if the highway is congested and all lanes are full of traffic and someone is giving me the flashing lights and riding my bumper because they feel they have a higher priority over me and everyone else and can't see beyond me, I don't make the same effort. Don't care what you ride or drive. Relax.

And all of this talk about door of car/truck: if this ever happens to me, you better knock me unconscious or hospitalize me because if I'm conscious enough to move I will drag you out of your vehicle and test my gear out on your face. There is a huge difference between smashing someone's mirror and ATTEMPTING TO KILL SOMEONE.

No problem, don't smash my mirror off like an asshat and we won't have a problem. If some schmuck wants to have a temper tantrum and wreck peoples property, they can live with the consequences. If someone meets the door of my truck, they're not likely to get up for a fight.
Having said all that, I don't go around getting into confrontations in my vehicles, just not worth it IMO.

To everyone who said the driver deserved what he got or maybe deserved even worse. Just wait till your mother, wife, daughter or even worse wife with the kids in the car come home in tears with the mirror dangling off, IT'S ALL GOOD. Just tell them what you've told everyone here. Why were you in the passing lane only doing 120 while the rider is bearing down on you qualifying for his next race. Just tell her, you deserved it or maybe deserved worse (maybe drag you out of the car) for only passing at 120. If I'm doing those speeds way above the limit, I am fully aware that someone may pull out (right or wrong) and I'm always anticipating it because there are so many poor drivers out there. I don't act like an entitled a - hole because I live in reality and and try and show restraint and patience, if I didn't the highways would be littered with side view mirrors.

So it's ok for the OP to act like an entitled a-hole but not the rider???

pretty sure everyone agrees that it was a dick move and the rider should have just gone about his day without the need to punch the mirror. What we were all trying to convey to the OP was that his actions due to his sense of entitlement and his belief that it is his duty to teach someone a lesson that cause the rider to have the reaction he did and therefore he shouldn't come in here crying for sympathy.

Forget it...the OP hasn't learned for this long during his 20+ years of 50,000kms a year super experience cause he's such a driving god he's got nothing to learn so all this is for nothing.

I don't get how you think I came here crying for sympathy..... I could care less about the mirror, whatever. I came on this site to do my rant and hopefully the sport biking community will know this guy and ask him to chill in his style of riding. I know in the future I will be more considerate of the bikers in my commuting. Yes I get you feel I acted like I was entitled to whatever, but I pulled out to do a legitimate pass, did not cut anyone off and next thing I know there is a biker 5 feet off my bumper. He started the argument, I escalated it and he "won" it.I might, in your opinion, give TDI drivers a bad name, but he sure hasn't helped the sport bike community with his "entitlement".I now humbly bow out of this conversation.

Don't worry. We'll be having words with Mike about this. We are not happy with how Mike has represented sport bikers and we'll be punishing Mike in a mighty way for this.

I can take the other mirror off for you as well. see you on the 401.

....Cannot tolerate tailgaters...

The reason why the rider smashed his mirrrors was because he got scared as the driver stopped accelarating. The constant speed of the car was eneough to overtake the truck. The drive did not gas it any more and rider did not anticipate this...

..He got angry, speed up, smashed his mirrors, speed off, thinking 'you deserved it'....

....not cool...

WTF is passive aggression? There was NONE of it in this senario!

I saw him coming in my mirror, but he was a long way back, did my over shoulder check going into passing lane. He might have been under the impression I cut him off and I might have, at the speed he was going..... but he was way back when I checked. He smacked my mirror after passing the truck. I was about to go into the center lane in front of the truck, blinker on, but he pre-empted me, sort of like the truck video above. I would have estimated his speed at 140-150 after he passed me, don't know what speed he was doing to catch up to me so fast in the first place.
I don't mean smack every sport biker..... just this dude when he starts to brag about it.

What defines way back from your perspective? A car length? 10 car length? I'm still having trouble understanding how he is able to get behind the back of your car to tailgate you if he was way back from you? You also mentioned you took your cruise control off while passing the truck effectively reducing your speed. You do understand that a faster vehicle is approaching you from behind, you should be courteous and apply more throttle to pass the car you are intending to then merge back to the right lane so the faster vehicle can pass. You chose to impede on another vehicle path when they were clearly traveling at a faster pace than you were. And you think nothing of it.

You instigated the situation, the rider took action that you didn't appreciate so you come on a motorcycle forum to express your discontent. I for one do not have sympathy for drivers like yourself. I do not condone the action of the rider for causing damage to your vehicle nor do I condone drivers like yourself who can't be bothered to wait a few more seconds so a faster vehicle can pass before you do. Be more courteous to others on the road and maybe situations like these won't happen again to you.

The passive aggression here was the car driver, noticing the motorcyclist behind him, going off cruise control to pass the truck more slowly, taking a self-reported kilometer to do so. And then holding up his hands as though he did nothing to deserve the motorcyclist's reaction. He purposely slowed his pass to "teach the motorcyclist a lesson" to not tailgate.

they were both dickheads.

The rider created the situation, the driver escalated, and then the rider escalated again. It's situations like this, that so often result in someone bloody and on the road.

So it's "courteous" to move over for every faster vehicle? What if they come bearing down at 200kmh and I am already passing a vehicle, should I be "courteous" and try to pass at 210 so that the faster vehicle can carry on their way? Or should I expect the other vehicle to be "courteous" and realise that I don't want to go that speed just because they do? I'm hoping the other vehicle will be "courteous" and wait for me to complete my pass as long as I'm not being as slow as molasses. Might is not right on the road sadly. Reasonable behaviour is.

No, but you shouldn't slow down your pass to teach the faster vehicle a lesson. SLOWING DOWN the passing is the problem here. Being slow as molasses (taking 1 kilometer to complete the pass) is the problem. And doing it purposefully to "teach a lesson".

Nor should you resort to an act of violence to "teach a lesson."

I am back to using the 401 for my commute to work.
I can see why death is possible on these roads. The 401 has become a dangerous place

All major GTA highways have become dangerous. Yesterday afternoon I witnessed a slammed pickup that was weaving in and out of the commuter lane on the 403. It appeared to be a single occupant in the vehicle and he was doing 140+ where he could squeeze through, on a busy highway, then crossing the solid lines back and forth to the commuter lane. The fast moving bikes I saw were tame by comparison.

Yep, I've meant to include all 400 series highways.
I would prefer to be paid slightly less than commute for more than 30 mins. Some things are not worth risking your life for
