R3 vs Sv650 (and do looks matter?)

You actually believe a 300 is more comfortable then a 600cc sport touring mount? My F4I was more comfortable to me then any of the 300's. I don't think you know what you are talking about.

If you are going to fabricate uneducated opinions to feed your argument do it with someone who hasn't ridden all of these bikes and has both sitting in his garage right now.

Oh you have an r3 in your garage right now? No I didn't think so...

The ergos on the r3 are exactly the same as my bandit 650 was...exactly. And the 650 is a sport touring bike a much better one than the fz6 in fact.

I'm pulling from my past 22 years of riding experience on everything from GP bikes to superbikes to Harley's to ujms.

Op is looking for a comfortable, sporty bike that can be a mini superbike if he needs it or a sport touring bike if he needs it....which is the r3.

Yes I am.

My r3 has a set of racetech springs and heavier oil up front, and the read pre load is set in its 6th position.

My sag is fine, it squats a little more than it should in the read when I ride two up (2.3 inches vs the recommended 1.5)

As I said, the bike is very capable of riding 2up but don't expect mamoth amounts of power and you will need a few more revs at launch. Nothing bike.

As far as commuting.

The r3 will sit at 85mph all day long getting fantastic gas mileage while doing so. In fact on the highway the low end buzzieness goes away at around 6500rpm and smooths right out (the r3 is an off set parallell twin unlike the ninjette)

To the guy who owns the fz6r.... Have you ever ridden an r3 for any long period of time? If you had you would realize that it would have no issues with any usage that the ride would throw at it. And considering its only 20hp less than your 600 it's not exactly a toad either.

OP I would listen to the guy who IS your size and has ridden the r3 now for 2000+ kms as well as sv650s/inline 4s/v4s/etc...

You would have to make the same mods to the sv as the r3 suspension wise and frankly the paralell twin is faaaar smoother at highway speed than a vtwin is. Thanks to its fireing order.

I have close to 2000km's on a black 2015 R3. An there is a difference between "being able" to ride on the highway and "comfortably riding" on the highway.

An about the horsepower difference. 78 - 42 = 36hp not 20. That's the same gap from my FZ to an R6, in fact that's almost the entire output of the R3.

It's not comparable.

I have a 2013 Ninja 300 SE in my garage. I have done a significant amount of miles on an R3, be it country roads/highway, city stop and go. I like the R3 alot, i would even say I prefer it to my Ninja although the pro-link suspension on the N300 is worlds better.

I am not saying the R3 is a bad bike, I am saying that someone buying one needs to understand that going with a 300 isn't all cake and rainbows. There is serious drawbacks if you are a big guy and they should not be taken lightly.

As the saying goes: "There's no replacement for displacement." ...or HP. Personally for just commuting and maybe day runs, the R3 sounds pretty good (I haven't ridden a modern small displacement bike in a while and I don't weigh that much), but for any longer distances or hauling weight (passenger or luggage), I'd go with the SV. Can the R3 do touring and passenger duty? Sure, just like I can move a household with a minivan vs a cargo truck...it will do it, just not as easily.

78hp from a fz6r..yeah no. At the crank maybe. Mcn has it at 66.4hp at the rear wheel and the r3 at 39.8hp at the rear wheel so still more than 20 I'll give itnto you.

And as far as "a big guy knowing the draw backs"....

Please enlighten my 245lb 6'1 frame...as to what the draw backs are...because the only difference I can feel is that you lose " roll on" which can be fixed by simply using the gear box and I have to throttle wheelie at 7500rpm vs 5000rpm on the 650.

On that note, just getting back from BC last week, I saw an red '07 cbr125 with a custom sidecar! The side car probably added at least 50lbs by itself. Can't imagine the guy having a passenger on it... lol

Is all the vast majority are saying, but it seems OP has his mind set on the R3. Go ahead and buy it since that is clearly what you want.

Different opinions in an internet forum? Go figure.

My 12 bikes that I ride at present must make my opinion approach that of a god. I should be more forceful with my views going forward when typing comments in forums.

Edit: sorry miscounted. Sold 4. Bought 2.

Yes both numbers are at the crank. No Tom foolery here. C.78hp for the FZ and c.42hp for the R3. The R3 loses about 5 to the wheel maybe a little more on the FZ due to heavier drivetrain but that's to be expected.

An if you want to believe the R3 is the best option for you at your size that's up to you. All I'm saying is that you would probably be better served riding something built with more then a 130lb Asian boy in mind.

??? Where did the Asian boy comment come from? lol

I know many fat Asian kids that weigh much more than that.

Nothing wrong with starting on an R3. It's only yer first bike after all. Many more to choose from as you grow/change experience.

Hell, I bought my 250 while I had a couple of 750s in the garage.

Designed and built in Japan yada yada.

An to add to my comment about the R3 not being made to support alot of weight. It has NOTHING to do with hating on the small bikes, my N300 supports my weight even better then my 6R does because of the pro-link design. I've got my 6R preload adjusted to 7, my Ninja is on a lower setting and maintains the same amount of sag.

It's all about the design with these things. So quit being a bunch of nancies.

Lol lets try to keep it civil guys

Still a toss up between the SV and R3, will probably come down to a test ride(apart from demo days) which dealerships allow private test rides?

I know they require you to be over 25(which i am) and an M2(which ill be getting soon)

I think i spoke to the guy at brampton powersports and he said they dont do test rides...

Saying a Japanese made bike is made for lightweight Asians, is like saying most bikes are made for fat white people (How many people in Asian countries see white people because of the American stereotype).

May I ask where you got the idea of an SV as a beginner/first bike?

From various different people(both beginners and more experienced riders) , including a friend who started on one, and later upgraded to a gsxr-600

Most dealerships don't offer test rides aside from demo days. That being said, I think they asked for an M when I test rode the cbr650, but this rule would be different per organization.

This is GTAM broskie. Like game of thrones for motorcycle forums.
