I agree that unacceptable behaviour in the workplace is one thing (and that goes for anyone regardless of sexual orientation), but I believe that someone brought up the fact that people can still lose their employment over being 'outted' as a homosexual (Don't Ask Don't Tell was only repealed fairly recently). That's the point - even in this age of 'tolerance' there are still those out there who DO take issue with someone's sexual orientation.
So this isn't really about gay people then, it's about ANYONE overtly making their sex life known to everyone around them. Yet here we are, in a thread talking about gay people and how uncomfortable it makes some heteros to know what they do behind closed doors. Somehow I highly doubt that this kind of squeamishness exists while hetero men are describing to their colleagues the chick they picked up at a bar and banged during the weekend.
I agree that if someone was fired just because they were outed, that is wrong.. 100%.. and i'm sure that does happen sometimes, because their are bigots out there.. but my point was that I believe often when someone says they were fired for being gay, it's not that simple.. they were fired for their flaming personality that disrupted the work place. And while being gay is not a choice.. being flaming is, so I have no pity. And yes, you are absolutely correct that this discussion should not just be limited to gay people.. it is not acceptable straight people to make their exploits public either.. I just feel that HR departments etc would be prepared to bring down the hammer on a straight person for being inappropriate in the work place, but would be squeamish about reprimanding a gay person for exactly the same behavior because they fear being looked at as a bigot...
I believe in true equality.. however I don't believe in going so far past that the middle we end up tipping the scales in the opposite direction. Not just in relation to gay people, but also women's rights, native American's, pretty much any minority.. we should treat them as we wish to be treated, but not walk on egg shells around them... equality for all.. special treatment for none.
