Pickup Trucks

Was waiting for pricing of the new Maverick as they're allowing the AWD and 4k to be added to the hybrid for the first time...

That's a 52k truck now for what's supposed to be an 'affordable' truck.

Guess I'm not buying that. There's no chance in hell I can make that up in fuel savings from a used one for 30-35k.
sure you can, 20+ years at $3.50 gas, carry the 1..

Amazing how different tires affect the ride quality. I put some Cooper Road and Trail tires on partially for more rugged looks, partially for better snow and rain performance. With the oem tires the truck had a floaty feel and now it rides firm and planted.
With the stock tires in the back on the way back home I still had room to pick up a dozen hydrangeas and a Japanese Maple in the back. I do love having a truck again.
Looks good, is that a LT tire and is it stock size?

Buddy has a brand new Tundra for work. Less than 6 months and 30k and it needs a new engine.

He was coming home on the 400. Lost all power. Lost all functions. Dead on the side of the road.

2 weeks for a new motor. Thankfully he had a second old truck he kept otherwise he’d not be able to work while he waits for the new engine.

The legendary Toyota reliability is taking a beating in the last two yrs . Tundra trucks are spitting out engines at 30-40k with alarming consistency.

When my buddy had his towed to the dealer there are currently 6 there waiting for new motors. Each one less than 50k.

They did the oil change the week before and when they checked it was black as coal.

What motor? What is the cause?

A quick search answered my own question:

"Toyota Motor North America has decided to replace the engines in more than 100,000 Toyota Tundra full-size pickups and Lexus LX SUVs from the 2022-23 model years that run rough and could potentially lose power because machining debris was not cleared when they were produced. The Japanese automaker said Toyota and Lexus dealers "will replace the engine with a new one at no cost to customers" and that customers would be notified this month about the fix."

At least they’re stepping up and acknowledging the issue and taking action. I respect that. Because of that, the motor issue wouldn’t dissuade me from buying one. I test drove the 24 in December and didn’t love it as much as other brands.
24 Sierra was my 2nd choice and I was on GM forums for a while. The amount of people with near-new Sierra’s sitting at dealerships waiting for lifters to be replaced (backordered) for months was astonishing. Even more astonishing is they would only replace whichever side of lifters was bad on each engine and. It just do both sides when the truck was there. Lots of owners had their broken truck sit for months to get fixed only to get it back and have the other remaining old lifters go bad and again be without their truck. That’s poor customer care.

I would NEVER buy a GM truck, ever again. Friends have had good experiences and so did I until about 15 years ago. A GMC one ton dualie I had on long term loan decided to spit it's right side upper ball joint at 4 months old and right turn me into a bridge abutment. The entire wheel assembly ran down the sidewalk for about a hundred feet, thank goodness there were no pedestrians. $40,000 damage to the truck - GM paid without a whimper. What would have happened if I had been pulling the 24 foot dual axle trailer at the time ? I have photos if anyone cares.

I understand the anger but bottom line is workers will make mistakes and machines will break. If the manufacturer doesn’t own up to it/fix it that would keep me from them (ie if they have a history of ball-joint failures and don’t do a recall). Fact is EVERY vehicle on the road will have a user story like this. Parts break, people make mistakes, and that won’t change.
Name the most reliable motorcycle in history and I’ll bet my investment portfolio that someone one day had a near-new one have a mechanical failure that caused/almost caused the bike to crash.

Once bitten, twice shy. And apparently while not wide spread it was a 'known' issue.

That’s a big number . I would not want to be one of the subcontractors involved in the engine build .

Almost certainly the block and head are machined at a Toyota facility, i don't see them contracting out that work to a Tier 1.

100%. Quality checks and human error will only ever be as good as the control plan that's provided.

A decade ago I was on the production floor at a Tier 1 doing metal stamping on night shift. One day I got asked to stay late in the morning to see my Manager, where he confirmed what parts I had run the day before. He indicated that 4 bins (let's say at least 4,000pcs) were defective due to hairline cracks in one of the corners. I asked him to show me the hairline crack and he handed me a part and a flashlight, yep, i could see the crack. He went through a checklist with me;

1) Did you not notice the cracks? No
2) Did you follow QA and check first/last off and every hour? Yes
3) Did you follow the control plan? Yes
4) Did you make appropriate notes during your run? Yes

Then he told me, because 4,000pcs had to be scrapped I was going to be given a written warning and slid it across to me. I read it over and refused to sign it. He was just sitting there with his mouth open, clearly the last thing he expected me to say. When he asked why I wasn't going to sign it I said "Show me on the control plan where I'm provided a flash light to check the corner of the parts." (It didn't exist). He got upset and told me to get lost. Never heard another word about it, lol.

Obviously the control plan called for visual inspection. However this hairline crack was impossible to see without the aid of a flashlight.

Just noticed the 2024 Ford Ranger is only available with a 5' bed. No more 'super cab' and 6'. Glad I didnt wait for the '24s (I considered it) and grabbed the 6' bed when I did. One extra foot may not seem like a lot but it has already come in handy a few times. I also dont have any need for a full back seat.

My MDX is getting to the point where I need to seriously thing about replacing it, or at least have a solid idea of what to replace it with when it actually dies (again). I've been mesemerized by the Jeep Gladiator since it was released. I know it's a Chrysler product, but if I can make an exception for the Viper, maybe I can for this as well? Thoughts before I start down the rabbit hole of Jeep forums?

Friend has one, drove it. Ugh. On the upside he uses a camper/tent in the back and that's a rather cool way to spend a weekend deep in the middle of no where. It does look neat..

On the flipside; it wanders the road like a jeep, all that plastic on the interior is going to sound like a gong show in a decade once it expands/wears.

Personally I don't find the cool factor offsets the downsides of jeep ownership for me, unless I was planning to use it like my friend does.

Buy a Viper instead.
