I do not understand how someone can be fired over that yet they publish the cartoons which seem even more inflamatory.
I suspect that what the fired cartoonist did would be considered Free Speech in France but as others have said what a private institution/organization holds its members up to is another matter.
It does seem to be a double standard that the cartoonist in question was dismissed for comments/behavior which upset practitioners of Judaism; yet they did not choose to censor themselves with regards to what might offend those of the Muslim faith.
I can see why a Muslim person could view this and be very frustrated.
Just the same though I suspect that the cartoonist would be allowed to say his anti-semitic remarks under French law. The censorship was imposed by the magazine; not France.
