Ontario should make winter tires mandatory.

A picture is worth a thousand words

So this past Friday I really seen how much snow tires help all the idiots around south Mississauga slamming into one another. Meanwhile I'm on old need to be changed all seasons and got around just fine. This thread title should be changed to Ontario drivers should SLOW THE F$%K DOWN and drive acording to the conditions.

you seem to be missing the point like a lot of others in this thread. ALL OTHER THINGS BEING EQUAL, you're much better off with winter tires.
Im sure some can drive on snow with race slicks while drunk and with one eye closed, thats not the point.

NOPE. I have used winter tires. I feel no difference. Probably because I drive properly when it snows. I'm starting to think there is a few tire salesman on this forum.

I think it should be mandatory for people to have race slicks in the summer dry roads.
If it rains the law should make it madatory to put on summer rain tires.
In the fall make it mandatory to have tires that are a bit softer then summer tires yet not as soft as winter tires.
Winter obviously winter tires are manditory, what idiot would think otherwise.
Spring.....mmmmmmm I don't know....a special SPRING tire that pushes away the water from the tire, is soft compound but changes into a hard compound depending road conditions.

It should also be manditory for every vehicle to have all these tires in the trunk of the car incase you are far away and the weather decided not to communicate with the weather network.

I have solved the worlds problems when it comes to car crashes, I'm so awsome.

I'm working on Alchohol-free tires too, where you can drink as much as you want but the tires will prevent you from crashing.

You're so right. All tires are the same. Its just a round slab of rubber. HELL LETS MAKE OUR OWN TIRES IN OUR BASEMENTS AND BECOME RICH. Because its all a conspiracy to make money off our backs. We can make a better job and we know better.

[serious] And yes and yes and YES, AND YESSSSS, people need better driver training in the GTA. Totally agree. [/serious]

If you can't tell the difference then you probably aren't as good of a driver as you believe.
I don't sell tires for a living, but do drive for a living. :D

dont forget ihat it should be mandatory to upsize your timmies to an extra large on days when there is more then 5 cm of snow.

The magic number for a change over is 7 degrees. No need for your special spring tire or other silly comparison.

If you watched the vid you'd know that, but i guess ignorance is bliss.

ps i run dirtbike tires on my sport bike on the race track, ima good driver, no need for slicks :D

slicks have less rubber and less tread which means less research, why are we paying more for them anyways?

You feel no difference?

How can someone so out of touch with their vehicle consider themselves a good driver?

Probably takes you a week to figure out you have flat as well.

Because people are cheap as ****. It's like asking why some people can't even be bothered to get a leather jacket for their bike gear or some gloves.

So refusing to buy something I don't need makes me cheap as ****? Thank goodness for that then!

Like most things, I think the disagreement in this thread comes largely from people trying to assert an oversimplified/generalized view of something that is not so simple. There is no single correct rule that applies to all. Here are some facts:

1. Not all tires are created equal. Even tires in the same segment or from the same manufacturer can vary drastically in performance.
2. All tires can lose traction no matter what the road conditions (hot n' dry or cold n' wet). It boils down to a combination of driver input and tire properties.
3. There are some non-winter tires that handle very well in winter (even better than some dedicated snow tires). For example, I've already mentioned the Nokian WRG2 in a prev post. I've also had great success with Continental ContiProContact during that huge snowfall in NY couple christmases ago.
4. There are also many all season tires that don't handle worth a damn in winter (e.g. Goodyear Wrangler RT/S had me sliding laterally while stopped at lights in only an inch of snow). The only real requirement for a tire to qualify as "all season" is that 25% of it's tread must be air.
5. Most--but not all--winter tires have measurably superior traction characteristics over the average all-season tire. However, often times the advantageous rubber compound only comprises the first half of the usable tread. Once the tread wears below that point there is negligible benefit.
6. The only way to get the best traction in all conditions is to have a separate set of tires targeted for every possible driving scenario (like race teams do).

So... here's what I'd say to some of the comments I'm reading:

"I've driven on all-seasons and winters and didn't notice much of a difference" - This could be due to the specific tires you tried. At the extreme end, you may have been comparing a very good all-season tire vs a low end winter tire. It also depends on the driving conditions you experienced and your driving style. Lastly, maybe you simply can't tell because you're not that sensitive a driver (no insult intended). But if you'd rather just believe that winter tires simply offer no benefit then you're free to do so.

"Winter tires make a huuuge difference! It also saved me from an accident." - Again, this experience could be due to the tires you are mentally comparing. Any winter tire is going to feel like a night and day difference to a crappy, low-end all season tire. Especially so if you haven't been watching the inflation and tread depth on the all seasons. If you had been riding on different all-seasons the change might not have felt as drastic. It may also come down to driving skills or habits. The difference with winter rubber might be more noticeable if the driver isn't driving appropriately for the conditions.

"Winter tires are proven to have better grip than all seasons" - In general, true. But see point #3 above. Your mileage may vary.

I don't like the idea of the government telling us what to buy but I do understand the reason for the winter tire law. In principle I disagree but as a pragmatist I'd like to see it happen in Ontario.
