Ontario should make winter tires mandatory.

snow tires is a crock if shyte!
it grew into multi billion dollar business now. and they are going to keepmgoing with it..

same ad bottled water, you remember how they condemd tap water a few years back?

same with the flu shot..

if there was an ounce of real truth to snow tires, emergency vehicles and the police would use them

I dont know if you're being serious or not, but the word retard keeps coming to mind.

And since we get a fraction of the snow we would get a fraction of that benefit.
okay so compare the GTA population with a lesser percentage... 3% represents dozens of lives. In my opinion every life that can be saved is important. on top of it you're talking in a huge part about comparing populations with demographics that are a lot different. A quebecer thats been driving in snow all his life vs someone immigrating here seeing snow for the 1st time wont have the same type of control.
That margin of a few feet might make a difference to the untrained hand a lot more.

Global warming will fix the issue of snow so we don't have to worry about these tires... I think we should support global warming as a permanent solution rather than support these magical tires.
ahhaah yes. then we need to find a solution to all the flooding that'll happen in those major cities near a body of water worldwide. Which is...hmmm most major cities worldwide

Can't find that study but I bet it doesn't account for half the population running pristine new tires because they had to buy them when the law took effect. So the real benefit would be less than reported.

Besides, the only purpose of the study would have been to demonstrate if snow tires are safer or more dangerous in the snow. We already know the answer to that, but it's not the whole question. It's the friggin sales pitch straight out of the industry!

Despite what many people here choose to believe (yes, selective knowledge), winter tires cost a lot. Extra wheels if you go that route, and the cost of changing them over twice a year. Unless you believe that having everybody change their own tires will add safety! Please. On top of that, a second set of tires doesn't mean they all last twice as long. Tires age. All of sudden though, people here are pretending they don't know that. Selective knowledge again. The industry pitchmen have really workrd you guys over!

I'm a big supporter of snowtires, I just got rims and cheapish tires from Canadian tire last year and they worked wonders! I just always find it hilarious when we get dumped on in Peterborough and hear about maybe one car accident happening compared to when it's barely snowing in Toronto and there are hundreds of accidents and all the schools get closed down. I think it was last year or the year before where it didn't snow all that much and York, Humber, U of T etc. got shut down and yet I still had to get to Trent when we had easily 3 times more snow. I guess they know that most people in ptbo have winter tires and know how to drive

call me a retard cuz i dont blindly believe what i am told??? cuz its "science"? open your eyes anus wipe!

if its about safety and they want to prevent accidents they should pump the money spent on snow tire advertisments in to more throughly training immigrants in to;

a) learning to drive
b) learning to drive in the snow

every year a tit bit of snow comes down and there is accidents galore! snow tires are not gonna change that. but better winter driving education to some one who has never seen snow and is now operating a vehicle will

its got nothing to do with safety

Jus saying.....

http://www.cbc.ca/hamilton/news/story/2012/12/01/hamilton-police-respond-to-43-accidents-friday.html

Hamilton police respond to 43 accidents during Friday commute in the span of 6 hours.

“It was fairly bad,” said Staff Sgt. Emidio Evangelista........."drivers should invest in snow tires, and be more mindful of the road conditions."
"The reported snowfall total at the Hamilton Airport on Friday was 4.4 cm."

If you can't handle less than 5cm of snow on the road then you shouldn't be driving. The same idiots that crash now with all seasons will crash with snow tires. They don't know the limits of their vehicle and then pay the price.

Hahaha, i dont mean to laugh at that but i've seen black cars with no lights on at night. I wish my hands were long enough i wanted to smack him in the head

Sent from my phone using my paws

those tend to have flashing lights hidden under the grill and if you shine lights on the sides you can see the ghost lettering OPP...

well , you refer to 5cm,, or the same amount where 2 people lost their lives in Caledonia.. so I am assuming you're saying they shouldn't have been driving .... so I am going to add my opinion, that you weren't aware that the 5cm of snow compacted to 1cm of shear wet ice on that bridge.. so your second statement about the same idiots that crash with all season vs snow tires is very true ,,, as the tires didn't cause or prevent the crash... if I could guess ,, I'd say they hit a patch of that wet shear ice... and lost control... and it was all over for them,, may they R.I.P.

Lol some of you think the rest of the world is covered with sand. Some come from places with a lot more snow, no salt/brine on twisty mountain roads and not much money to get winter tires.

You mean winter tires are safer in the winter? Geez, why didn't anybody say so!

So given the 5% reduction in collisions measured in Quebec, that would have been only 41 crashes in the Hamilton area that day if everybody had winters on. Great. But that's not even the full picture.

The other half is cost. Even if we accept the wildly optimistic estimate that it only costs $200 for a set of wheels, and let's say they last 10 years. That's $20 per vehicle in the Hamilton area (how many, a million or so...?). So that's $20 million spent to save 2 crashes! Oh yeah, but the law in Quebec wouldn't kick in for 2 more weeks anyway so NO crashes would have been saved. Maybe the mandatory period should be November 1st to April 30th? But then it's been known to snow in June, so what about all those crashes?

There's no way to look at your argument any more favourably than I just did, and it's still a ridiculous position to take. Stop being a shill for the tire companies!

When I made sales call in Pboro I found the people to be more laid back than the type As in TO. Also when it doesn't take 2 hours to get from A to B one tends to drive less aggressively. (I didn't have snow tires there either) Working in Pboro was like being on vacation in TO.

Doubtfull...

Doubt all you want but those worn out snow tires worked like a charm in heavy snow. The rims and tires cost $100 and got me through half of a snowy winter.

Snow tires out preform all seasons in snow and ice, therefor they are safer. I don't know how you think thats the tire manufactures making that up. We responded to a whole lot of car accidents friday, not to many of them had snow tires on. Without a doubt people suck at driving, but i dont see how you think having winter tires would make it worse. My moms genesis couldn't make it up the driveway with her bridgestone potenza that are a year old.

Quebec has just under 1,000,000 million immigrates living there today. Do you just mean Female Asian kind?

The Nokian WRG2 is supposed to be an awesome all season tire for winter, even better than some dedicated winter tires. It's branded mountain-snowflake as well. Bit pricey though.

I did lots of research and almost got that WRG2....But since I have a 2nd set of wheels I decided to get Yoko GeolandersG072 for winter, and get something less aggressive for summer on the other wheels. If I only had one set of wheels the WR would have been a great tire.

.....and cbcanada....you are wrong...police and emerg vehicles do use snow tires.
The OPP cruiser parked next to me at Timmies today had a set of Firestone Winterforce tires on it for your info.
It's not propoganda...they work. Did we all managae 10 yrs ago on all seasons? Yup. But what''s wrong with something that improves performance and safety? Are they expensive? Yup. But one set of snows that will last 3 winters costs less than one minor fender bender, even if no one is injured. Money well spent in my opnion.....but what do I know? I've been driving everything from 1700 lb econo shitboxes to an 8500 lb work van towing a trailer, and have yet to drive less than 50,0000 kms/ y for the past 22 yrs. I didn't always have snowtires......but I sure do see the merits of them and have them for all of my cages now. They make almost every car a 4x4 when the roads are a mess. When I was in the mountains in BC, where trucks were pulling over and putting tirechains on, and I was struggling to drive a 4x4 pickup on all seasons, little VW Jettas on Blizzaks would drive right around me like I was standing still. Facts and physics can't be argued.
