Ontario should make winter tires mandatory.

My parents and Grandparents all survived driving in much worse weather on much worse tires. Ofcourse that was when you actually needed to know english to get a drivers license.

Haaaaaa haaaa - LOVE IT!!!

How the **** did I survive 28 yrs, Monday - Friday, Hamilton to Oakville and back with NO snow / winter tires ever, and not have as much as a single 'fender bender'?

I'm a fan of winter tires, and I do use them. Realistically though, if you live and work in Toronto, how many days out of the year are winter tires going to be hugely beneficial? Three, four maybe? Yes, winter tires do work better at freezing temps on dry roads, but it's not the same night and day difference as on snow or ice. Last winter I didn't even bother to put them on, and not once did I think that I should have.

I'm amazed that I used to drive a '92 Mercury Cougar, big a55, two ton, rear wheel drive, zero safety aids, and POS all season tires. The thing would get stuck in an inch of slush. Amazingly, I drove it through two average winters without issue. Well except for slush, I got stuck a lot.

This is getting pretty heated...

I agree that snow tires are a significant improvement, that worn snows are better than new all-seasons in the cold and ice, and that there's benefits.

However, I think the gap can be partially covered by driving somewhat carefully at a lower speed and by leaving a following distance.

I was on the roads on Friday with my wife's Forester with brand new snows. I never once broke traction and the Subie did amazing. However, I'm very confident that with adjusted driving, I could've made it just fine with my Accord with newish all-seasons.

There was the argument earlier in this thread that you're a hypocrite if you buy new sticky motorbike tires and then run all-seasons in winter. I'd argue that a motorcycle low-side or high-side at good speed is far more likely to hurt or kill you than a fender-bender in traffic, of the sort that'd be fixed by snow tires (rear-ending someone or spinning into the ditch.)

I got caught in that mess on the 401 yesterday with snows. Facts are there was no brine or salt on the road when the snow belt came thru. Snows or no snows it was glare ice. Everyone was having trouble.

Global warming will fix the issue of snow so we don't have to worry about these tires... I think we should support global warming as a permanent solution rather than support these magical tires.

Anyone travelling outside the GTA should sport winter tires in the winter - period. I think its pretty well established that there are a lot of poor drivers out there - who the hell wants one of those mucks sliding across the line and into your door panel?! And you can buy Nokian Haka's (absolute best winter tire out there) for the price of a good all season. I have a class ACMZ and until a few years ago lived/drove in real winter weather all season long. A few years as a volunteer fire-fighter and driving truck taught me everything I needed to know - every little bit helps!

Being a great driver helps but why should we have to focus on avoiding the knuckleheads that have suddently gone out of control and are heading your way? There is soooooo much wrong with how we license our drivers these days its probably imopossible to fix. Mandatory snows will save lives.

Aw crap.... you mean all the coin I spent on gear and helmets was a big waste of money because I've "never used" the extra safety these things provide cos I havent crashed in all my years?

Thats it, in 2013, I go squid!

What does gear have to do with better performance? I guess it's as stupid as saying my PR3s are the best motorcycle rain tire, therefore it should be law for all motorcycles to run them for their own safety.

I'm curious as to whether there is any data from Quebec showing if their law has had any effect on accident stats?

In a true nanny state 100% of one's income will be taken to pay for all of the necessary items the lobbyists have conviced the government we need.

I don't doubt this. But for every story I hear like this I can tell you 10 of people that crashed.

Years ago, I used to drive a Lincoln sedan for my b in laws limo company. I was on the road for hours and hours back and forth to the airport.

If you have several hours to spare, I can tell you many stories of drivers I've seen sliding into ditches, accidents, fender benders, you name it.

With snows, the Lincoln was unstoppable. Good times!

yup, should have been a poll...snow tires should NOT be mandatory in Ontario.. I rode for 3 winters when I couldn't afford a vehicle,, much less snow tires ;-) When it was stupid to ride.. I called a cab.. or waited 2hrs for the roads to be cleared or didn't go. a 72 honda 750cc.. mechanical brakes. and beside me was a new GS750 How many times has it been said in this thread.. we need driver training! ? You don't have to be "dying" to get to work,, or home,, and ... that snow , ice ,, that we had that caused a couple bad accidents...it was the type of ice that NO tire performs* in if the driver doesn't know how to drive thru it... cause stopping safely wasn't an option. *well,, maybe studs... but my experience with stud to ice VS rubber to ice shows the sears ice radial, or blizzak tire are better than studs... altho that is a completely different ice surface than what we experienced recently. I saw wet glare ice.. I saw a parked vehicle slide on a slight incline. Drive safe out there! Take a motorcycle course.. or any driving course.. not just a driving test..

snow tires is a crock if shyte!
it grew into multi billion dollar business now. and they are going to keepmgoing with it..

same ad bottled water, you remember how they condemd tap water a few years back?

same with the flu shot..

if there was an ounce of real truth to snow tires, emergency vehicles and the police would use them

Hmm,, yah,, Like Windsor,, who have at least 6 weeks less winter than GTA ... later fall,, and earlier spring
I think its pretty well established that there are a lot of poor drivers out there
Yah,, so tires will make them better drivers.. sorry , I disagree..

Sorry, not to get personal,, but I have talked to truck drivers before... and I can understand a firefighter seeing and knowing a LOT ... but life has a way of teaching you more every day !

If mandatory snow tires save lives... and supports an industry.. makes jobs,, and adds to more tires in the recycle program , and fossil fuels consumed, vs driving training program, that supports an industry, and makes jobs, and I can't seem to find a drawback.. I think we should carry on with the thinking,,, mandatory snow tires, 10 airbags per seat, orange vests for all passengers, helmets mandatory in vehicles, safety glasses, 5 point seat belts, no distraction devices like radio, or coffee cup holders, reduced speed limits to 40kmh ....

Interesting if they don't use them. As this is a motorcycle forum, where is this thread going? Snow tires today, illegal to ride your motorcycle tommorrow during winter months. WTF.
