Ontario should make winter tires mandatory.

people dont use caution, this morning 401 west 5am,single car into the guard rail, what causes that?

This morning, on the 410, there was an airport limo spun around and in the ditch to the right on the southbound, and a pickup that looked like it had rolled and was in the ditch on the right on the northbound. It wouldn't have taken much speed given that my car was creeping toward the right at 20 Kmh, with winter tires.

So what compelled you to keep going and not turn around and go back home?

The fact that I was going to be able to get to work, by driving reasonably, and that I had two scheduled appointments with clients who I'd been waiting a week or more to help.

I wonder if you'd still think it was worth it if you got rear-ended by some useless twit in a 6000lb SUV. I have never, ever, had any problems with driving in inclement weather so long as visibility is decent. Other seem to have problems with it..... other people worry me.

Life is an exercise in mitigating risk. Surely a motorcyclist can understand that ;)

Some employers are not as understanding

Based on the horrendous number of accidents on the 400-series highways this winter I'd say that in those conditions you're really pushing your luck.

I am of two minds on this point.

1) Employers should be more understanding when commuting becomes challenging.
2) If you have a longer commute and don't drive a vehicle that is adequately prepared for severe winter conditions then that choice is on you.

I was written up for reaching late a few times this winter. Remember that storm? Or should I saw those several storms? I was late a few times to work. Got written up!

Why should employers be more understanding? Do the weather forecasters not give enough warning? If you're told there's going to be a storm then you leave earlier. We all know just from this thread how a simple fact like winter tires help a great deal can't seem to get through people's heads, so you damn well know it will take a lot longer to get into work.

Based on the fact that I made it without incident, and that beyond 410 the highways were in reasonable shape (The Gardiner was completely clean), I would say otherwise.

How is it your employers fault you did not leave earlier and did not take into concideration that it would take you longer to get to work?

Sometimes its really hard to estimate time. You never know how long they are going to clear an accident. The funny thing is management is often late too.

Yes, that is if you get stuck behind one. There are sources such as CP24 before leaving your house to check to see if your route is clear or the radio. Been late once this winter due to my clutch going and having to wait for CAA for an hour to take it to the shop.

Also, just because others are doing it, does not mean it is ok. lol

My loyalty lies with employers who are flexible. If I put in my 8hrs at the end of the day that's all that matters. As long as its not affecting another employee or the running of the business for eg. An assembly line.

I don't have much employers that are time sensitive. If I do I generally look for other opportunities.

Oh as for management being late, they need to lead by example. I generally don't get along with people who "do as I say not as I do". My boss was like that

LMAO. How the hell is watching CP24 before someone walks out the door to go to work going to help if there's a 10 car pileup on their route between then and the time they stick their key in the ignition?

It won't, but it will certainly inform you of an existing 90 car pileup that won't be cleared until 7:00pm.

"or the radio" most vehicles have those right?

And you feel everyone trying to re-route because of this accident won't cause delays in getting to work? Stuff happens. Even the best prepared can't control or predict for everything and its a foolish boss who expects that.

I would never work for a place that watches my time like that and lucky for me I won't have to due to the field I am in. I self schedule and if I'm doing something I don't need to be in the office for I work from home or a coffee shop or wherever.

back to thread topic. I don't have winter tires but I also don't drive when the weather is bad because I don't have to and at worse is slow surface streets downtown which is exactly why I don't want them mandated because everyone in ontario isn't in the same situations regarding road needs.
