Ontario should make winter tires mandatory.

I have decided that the wife's Venza will get a set of Nokian WRG2 SUV tires later this year.

If they're good enough as a all season tire for a cold climate Canadian Police Service that should pan out as a good move. What got you onto the Nokian WRG2?

They are considered an all weather tire, not all season. They arent cheap tho... luckily my brother manages a Kal Tire out in Edmonton so he can help coordinate a good deal at a local Kal.

Research tire wear before making your decision. Nokian may be better than some of the other brands, but a couple of them are suffering from rapid tire wear.....like a SC1 lol.

Apparently they are a noisy tire as well? Esp in summer. That would be a deal breaker for me.

Its all relative. I had some garbage Contis on my Edge when I bought it. I thought I had a bad wheel bearing but it was just the tires.

I'll do more research. They have a new version too the WRG3.

I did the Advanced Winter Driving course today that I had mentioned earlier. It was held at TMP with Gerry Low from Driveteq.ca as my instructor. It was a total blast. My winter tires are noticeably worn after 4 hours of lapping, especially from powering out of turn 1. I learned a ton of driving tips that I can apply on the street. The track was a mix of asphalt, glare ice, hard-packed snow and drifts, just about everything you can encounter during winter driving season. I'm a lot more familiar now with how the Quattro system responds under those conditions.

Entrance with half-meter drifts across it:

Waiting for course to start. The white Audi S4 had a phenomenal Russian driver.

I haven't seen any reviews that say rapid tire wear. Looks as though about 60K km, which is a bit on the low side but not outrageous. That's still about 5 years of driving for Kelly.

I've done some more reading and it looks as though the WRG3 is quieter and smoother but really lacks the winter performance that the G2 has. It looks like the WRG2 is 'average' when it comes to road noise.

My experience was that going from all season to snow tires was as noticeable an improvement as going from 2WD to 4WD.

With snow tires and 4WD, I made other drivers look foolish today.

Snow tire are more about helping you to brake and avoiding the car to slide in curve, or being pushed by the wind in a straight line.
I owned Tercel, Cavalier and a Civic, and still pass people on the 401 that have 4WD. My first year in Ontario (Coming from Québec where 3foot of snow by January is normal) drove me crazy, seing everybody driving like ****tards and not being able to go out of a parking with a truck made us laughed so hard. I will never forget the look of peoples stuck in the snow with a truck when I passed them with a tercel.

200 accidents in Toronto alone, and a pile up on the 401.

That's pimp son! Wonder if it comes in gold?

Pretty dangerous out there. I won't drive 401 unless its absolutely necessary

Highway 410 is ice this morning. Even my winter tires were sliding all over the place, at 20 Kmh and less. The track bare areas are actually ice covered and the best traction is on the fully snow covered areas.
