Ontario should make winter tires mandatory.

Thx thought so.

Here's a thought. If I am driving far away I can pump my tires to 50 psi or whatever their max is for the highway portion of the trip. After the highway I can drop the pressure to the recommended level.
i do not recommend pumping it to the TIRE manufacturers max. Youll risk uneven wear on the center part of the contact patch.

Go with your car manufacturers max (add a few PSI if you REALLY want to) but the same tire wont require the same pressure on cars that are engineered differently (and the difference in curb weight too)

EDIT) oh and youll feel every single possible knick and crack in the road as well...

So... a Quattro is good to go with slicks? Or I suppose it's inferior?

I'd take good tires over AWD any day of the week...

what good is AWD if you can't put it down to the pavement properly? That's why the most common cars in ditches are AWD SUVs who's drivers think they're invincible with power to the four wheels.

In my experience, good tires help until the snow reaches approximately the bumper, then 2wd vehicles really struggle (especially with acceleration from a stop). On my wifes SUV, with awd and snows, we have been out in storms where there still wasn't enough traction to exceed 50 km/h (all wheels were slipping while pushing through over 10" of snow), my car would have been entirely stuck.

Personally I think mandatory snow tires to drive between December and March (like in QC) is a terrible idea, however I wouldn't be entirely opposed to occasional snow days where they declare that snow tires are required because some people are too dumb to know better. Most winters this would only be 2-5 days a year.

have they taken over now? They used to be second, behind the rwd muscle cars.

in Toronto you might get away with just AWD, but any cars I get now will have snows, AWD or not.

If you go to a different sized winter tire make sure the load range rating is still equivalent. For my vehicle I needed to maintain the 93 load index.

My awd car was scary in the snow with all seasons. It would accelerate extremely well but stopping or turning, forget it! It's now equipped with snow tires and it's just frustrating to drive because all the other idiots with all seasons are in the way or causing accidents.

Also, make sure the 16" wheel will fit your car. You may have clearance issues with the brakes.

It was a nice day in the early spring, 8-10 deg and dry roads. Took my Audi out. Got stuck in a plowed parking lot on Bridgestone S-03s.

Have you considered Driver's Ed.........................Old Man?

BLUE KAWI is booked up solid.

S-03s + packed snow + anything more than a 1 deg incline = wheelspin. The only difference between AWD and FWD/RWD is the number of wheels that are spinning.

Until those same people slam into your car full of family members causing injury or death, cause he thinks his 3 season tires are "good enough".

Well no, It just means people would drive faster with snow tires with the same result. How about people just drive according to the weather conditions.? Too much bubble wrap in or society. The person driving will be held responsible, and that is what stops people from out driving the road conditions. Please no more pre crime here.

Great argument. I'm sure it's all those people on all seasons driving nice and cautious that are the problem

People driving too slowly or unpredictably because they don't have the proper tires for winter are dangerous as well.

Ya those "cautious drivers" doing 10 km/h 3" from eachothers bumpers aren't an issue at all. With snow tires I can do the speed limit and keep proper controll of my vehicle which means stopping AT the stop sign, not in the intersection and I can also make it up a hill at more than 5km/h. I can drive without snows or awd but why would I? I commute 150km a day and anything that makes my drive less stressful is worth it's weight in gold. I think I'll install a plow this year to move the "cautious drivers" out of my way so it doesn't take me 4hrs to drive 50km.

I had a 2 wheel drive pick-up for years, snow tires on all fours made a huge difference,I will be getti ng snows for the new beater .

I have been using winter tires for over 20 years and, as a skier, usually find myself driving on really bad days on some really bad roads because those are the best ski days. My experience has been that snow tires offer better control in those conditions, so much so that I would not drive a vehicle in the winter without winter tires.

Now most Toronto residents probably don't need snow tires for most of the winter because the roads are cleared more quickly and there is usually less snow, lets not include last couple of winters. On the few days when it is too bad to drive, there is the option to use transit, something we in smaller communities just don't have.

Which is why I believe legislating winter tire use on the majority of people who really don't need them most of the time is an unnecessary step, so rather than create a new law, the province could offer a rebate with proof of purchase. I'm not sure if any others have talked to their insurance providers lately, but I just found out my insurance company offers an additional discount if you use winter tires. My rate had already gone down and then it was reduced even more. For once I'm not mad at an insurance company at renewal time.

While I can see the definite positives with winter tires, I think it would be more important to teach people to fricken drive!
How many bike fatalities do we read about here every week in the summer? To many, that's for sure and it has nothing to do with tires!

I was lucky enough to be raised in the country were owning field cars was the norm, I pretty much felt comfortable drifting a car by the time I was 16... Not that I'd ever recommend it on the road! Lol
I've commuted from Orangeville to the city for the last 20 years, all of them on all season radials. I've never got in an accident once! There had been occasions when I've started to slide but the ole field car training kicked in instead of panic.

I feel comfortable commuting from home to the north side of Brampton but as soon as you hit city limits, it seems you run into a wall of idiot drivers! Actually, scratch that... A wall of selfish inconsiderate half assed trained drivers!
If the government wants to make it safer out there for everyone, sure, mandate winter tires but IMO it would go further to teach kids sliding techniques and a ******** of driving etiquette!!!

ITT: people who can out drive winter tires/abs/traction control and have never been in an accident
