Ontario should make winter tires mandatory.

Nothing wrong with it, but it would be a political suicide, because half of the province would end up off the roads not passing such logical tests .... LOL Because of weak public transit system they could not get to work or elsewhere as easily and timely as they do now .... which political party will have the guts to do that?

Exactly -- they could not pull that move or they would cripple the province. The places that require real skill and testing to get a license also have decent public transit for those that cannot pass.

Here it is a cheaper choice for the government to have a lot of accidents and high insurance rates than have 1/2 the population immobile.

Given that this morning some idiot tried to fit my Mazda 5 into the passenger seat of his Corolla, I'd be more than happy with periodic retesting. I'd also be happy if police would actually show up to collision scenes where there's someone who should be charged, so that points alone could take the real idiots off the road.

Half the province lol, more like 75%.

The problem has nothing to do with winter tires, summer tires, having all the safety and assists in the world wont solve a thing.

If they just made licensing more difficult so the average idiot cant get one. I'd personally pay hudreds of of dollars and hours of my time every so many years to be retested. I'd even go so far to take special tests to be licensed to drive in all driving conditions just to keep bad drivers off the roads.

Whats wrong with that logic?

No license = no way to get to work for too many people. It would be a huge drag on the economy. Consider it just one of the many costs of having a car-dependent culture like ours.

Thank You! There are rational people out there!

What economy? Over 45,000 people lost their jobs in December. And everyone else is a public sector worker.

Now now, any data you don't like, you get to call it an outlier and ignore. Lol, like the dec job numbers.

Saw the video - crappy start to the day. Thought he was going to pull a runner.

"The Georgia State Patrol said more than 2,000 cars were abandoned along the freeways."
"The Patrol responded to more than 1,460 crashes between Tuesday morning and Wednesday evening, including two fatal crashes, and reported more than 175 injuries."

You're gonna tell us they should make winter tires mandatory in Georgia next?

That was a very uncommon thing for that state. Most of those drivers had never seen those driving conditions, and not one of them would have had snow tires on. That's why they had those stats. They likely won't see that again for quite some time.
I have a relative that now lives in N.C. and when they get any form of frozen precipitation, it's chaos. Everyone tells him he his nuts for driving in what we wouldn't blink an eye at.

The weather that crippled the 401 was just some good winter weather here, much more severe than what was seen in Georgia. Snow tires and driver experience made it a better outcome than if it was a bunch of southern drivers with summer tires on.

Now you're talking. So we shouldn't present specific weather events as arguments in favour of mandatory winter tires. Instead, we should consider the risks presented by common weather patterns in each area.
So the question becomes; what is the barometer by which we differentiate which areas need mandatory winter tires, and which don't?

Ontario should make summer tires mandatory

Don't forget mandatory winter horseshoes for horses.

Minimum 70/30 dual sport tires for gravel roads. Anything less is uncivilized. There oughta be a law.

Mandatory drivers ed?

Umm have you seen %90 of the drivers ed teachers driving around? Those idiots can't drive either and they're just teaching their terrible skills/habits to other people who have no business being behind a steering wheel.

Doesn't the graduated licensing take care of all this nastiness? Apparently not. It must be the "everybody gets a pass and gold star" culture the liberals love so much. Where I grew up that wasn't the case and you can see that reflected in industry and on the roads. Canadians are a bunch of glorified hillbillies. Generally speaking of course.
