Ontario should make winter tires mandatory.

I think I may have replied to this thread in the past voicing my belief the choice for winter tires should be left up to the individual rather than the nanny state. I still believe that now, however, I bought a new car a couple weeks ago that came only with summer performance tires. So, I bought 4 snows for it. My car with snow tires, when compared to my wife's SUV with all seasons, is night and day. That said, we normally don't get this kind of winter weather, but when it does happen, you are much safer with the winter's on.

My suggestion would be for insurance companies to give a better discount for those with snow tires rather than legislate it.

But....but....but.... what about global warming????

I'm dealing with that issue on another board at the moment also. The basic reason why people refer to "climate change" instead of "global warming", these days, is because scientists didn't understand that regular people don't think or talk like scientists. It's global warming, not in my backyard warming.

Snow tires are a good idea, as I'm sure a lot of people who were in that 20 vehicle collision out near Brighton realize now.

Does that mean that I think they should be mandatory? Nope, not on your life. Much like how I learnt to wear proper gear while riding, such behaviour is frequently self correcting.

Much like how ABS, airbags, stability control, rear view cameras (coming soon) and other safety measures are "mandatory" on todays new cars, yet have saved countless lives and nobody else has 44 pages on GTAM on why these things aren't necessary and how they add to a cars cost?

Though seat belts ARE mandatory.

A summer performance tire has no business in the winter. That's like slicks in the rain.

So is everything else I mentioned.

No they aren't. They're standard equipment on vehicles. There's a difference but I agree with you. Things like that because of all the knobs in the world have driven car prices way up.

Because they give away licenses to complete retards

+1,000,000,000 to that! I hate hearing all these commercials about cars that will apply the brakes for you, or have back up cameras. I would much rather have people paying attention and stopping on their own/learning to drive than have a computer do it. People will end up relying on it too much and when it fails will smoke the car ahead of them.

What ticks me off is the admonition to drive really slow according to the conditions. I think many accidents are caused due to really slow drivers frustrating other drivers.

Thought i was going to get rear ended today, they decided to drive into the snow bank instead... oddly enough while i have mud and snow tires on my jeep they aren't as grippy as winter tires. how ever 4x4 part time does seem make a difference, even in stopping (each wheel is locked with the wheel kitty corner to it). when i try to stop in slippery conditions in 2wd the truck slides all over the place, sideways.... try to stop in 4x4 mode in the same conditions and it stops in a shorter amount of distance with more control...

On my way to work this morning, merging on to hwy 17 (2 lanes, 90km/hr) the truck in front of me merges doing about 45, poor guy that was behind him on the hwy doing probably no more than 80 (roads we a bit slippery) had to nail the brakes and swerved on the shoulder to avoid this guy... Who continued doing 45 down the highway with a line of traffic behind him.

If people would just learn how to drive on winter roads it would go far!

I have to agree with others who see the slow, or should I say very slow drivers the root cause of many problems. God forbid if a back end of their car moves, steps out a bit a panic goes off and they start driving even slower.

Proper training and getting used winter driving conditions would go much further in my opinion than just mandating winter tires for everyone.

Too bad cops give **** to anyone that practices drifting in an empty parking lot at night. You can actually get some heavy charges laid.

The problem has nothing to do with winter tires, summer tires, having all the safety and assists in the world wont solve a thing.

If they just made licensing more difficult so the average idiot cant get one. I'd personally pay hudreds of of dollars and hours of my time every so many years to be retested. I'd even go so far to take special tests to be licensed to drive in all driving conditions just to keep bad drivers off the roads.

Whats wrong with that logic?
