Ontario should make winter tires mandatory.

I really don't see an issue with banning smoking in a car with children. There really are a lot of parents that neglectful.

I would agree about the licensing standards.

We shouldn't be told by the government that in order to drive we must have winter tires. It's like when they told us to get emission test every other year. How about smoking in your own vehicle when there's children in the car. I wouldn't do it but they do these things because they think we are to stupid to make the right choice. They never stop telling us what to do. The biggest problem is, there are too many drivers on the road that should not have a licence to drive. They can't drive the speed limit in traffic and when they get on snow they lower there speed even more or they think that it's ok to drive faster so I can make this next light. (Didn't mean to go on a rant, just my two cents.)

People ARE stupid enough to smoke in the car with kids. I see it every once in a while... Heck, my mom who is an RN did it when I was a kid until she smartened up about it.

The standard for drivers is horrible. Of all the cars I've seen in the ditch this season(or nearly in it), every single one of those situations was avoidable. Yesterday on a straight, flat 80km/hr road, with snow on the sides, a car had touched the shoulder, over corrected and came flying across the road, across someone's front yard, and stopped just short of a telephone pole. I couldn't believe it, even with bare roads people can't control their cars. Usually I would have stopped to pull someone out, but I figure someone this dumb deserves to pay for a tow.

Up here the road clearing isn't awesome, there is always snow on the roads, and idiots decide that 50 is ok to do on HWY 17 where the limit is 90. The stretch where I live is pretty deadly with multiple fatalities and serious collisions every year, and yet people that should not be winter driving get out there and cause issues.

I really would like to see a strict test/course to allow people to drive in the winter months. It's Ontario, we get snow, flash freezing, freezing rain, black ice, etc etc. Learn how to drive in it or stay home.

I'm heading through the GTA for christmas, and I'm planning my trip so that I pass through it at 3-4 AM to avoid the stress of driving through.

It's sad (but reasonable) that you feel safer on gta roads with a bunch of drunk drivers than you do with drivers of typical gta ability.

I was driving on Concession road 7 in Withby (just north from hwy 7) going about speed limit (50) as the conditions weren't great, just before lakeridge road the road turned into Ice for no reason and I was approaching the intersection, I started braking well in advance and my car started sliding, I end up putting the car side ways in order not to go on the ditch and then when the car started going to much to the left I put it side ways to the other side, both actions were controlled in order to keep on the road. I wonder how many people have the skill and reflexes to do something like that, I bet most would have freaked out and end up in the ditch. I got the hell out of that stop sigh really quick since I knew there were cars approaching and the same thing was going to happen to them

The damn left lane cruisers are really starting to bother me, they are finally getting to me so much that I just want to hit them with my car, damn stupid people

Remember about ice during the weekend. When we got that big ice storm, years back, I had no real problem getting to work. Once I got to the parking lot at work and started heading for my spot around the back of the building, however, I found that I could neither brake nor turn. I slid maybe 150 feet at less than 20 Kmh, with absolutely no control, then the front of the car mounted the foot tall concrete wall at the back of the lot. The area was covered with ice, that had about a half inch of water on top of it.

Winter tires should be mandatory. You never know what could happen.

Are you ok with not riding your motorcycle from October to April? because I am not.

Our fundamental problem is lack of driving skill, winter tires will help but can't fix stupid.

I think that if somebody who knows better than me (A lot of smart people around esp. in gov.) say its dangerous I would give up riding from October to April. Better safe than sorry. I've heard of people wiping out on sunny dry days. Somebody should look into that.

I agree it comes through education not more laws. Maybe it is a lost cause considering the number of people who don't even bother to clear their vehicle of snow before driving around. Covered headlights or creating a hazard with the pile of snow on top should be able to be charged under existing laws. People just don't seem to care about their own safety let alone consider the impact their choices have on others. I don't have snow tires but I also have assessed the risk and living downtown Toronto and avoiding driving in bad weather has been a good solution. If I still lived in the snow belt where I grew up I'd have snows in a heart beat. There have been years where I've riden my motorcycle almost till Christmas downtown.

A dangerous driving condition has to be determined according to the specific weather at certain moment, No one can make a blanket statement to say it is dangerous riding in October because if it is warm and the roads are dry, it is very safe assuming that you are following the speed limit, and the very smart people in government comment is very questionable.

I think your and Rob MacLennans' above examples of ice condition would be a very strong arguement for blanket laws.

I originally thought you were being sarcastic but then you said this:

Crazy talk I say......

I disagree, **** can happen during the summer, sand can be on the road or very heavy rain and no one is banning motorcycle riding during those times. if I purchase a vehicle, pay the taxes and maintain it accordingly, the government shouldn't have the right to tell me I can't ride it unless it is unsafe for other people. Riding during a beautiful warm day in October at the posted speed limit is not dangerous to anyone, so this is why blanket laws in this case are unfair.

I fail to see how my comment about an Icy road during a December storm with extreme cold reinforces your argument, but meh that is just my opinion

35+yrs. winter driving. No accidents. Never owned a winter tire. Pure fluke. There should be a law mandatory winter tires because YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT COULD HAPPEN!

Sand? Front wheel washout Southwood 13 into oncoming hayseed. Shhhh. Why make a case for banning m/c year round?

In my case the only thing that would have helped were studs, which are illegal on Southern Ontario roads.
