Ontario should make winter tires mandatory.

That I'd like to see.

Loved my Subaru with 4 snow tires this morning!

She was frustrated that nobody can drive. Driving that car in a snowstorm is like driving most cars on a sunny afternoon in July.

So right. People think I'm crazy passing them but they are the ones without proper equipment.

According to this, more accidents occur in good weather compared to winter weather. Proves that we need better driving schools rather than good tires.

That data is useless, so the 'results' are useless. They explain: "Of all the car accidents disclosed while getting car insurance quotes at Kanetix.ca in 2012, 25.6 per cent occurred in the spring months (March, April and May) and in the fall months (September, October and November)." It's not actual #s, it's people looking for quotes saying "yeah, I got in an accident 2 years ago - November'ish" - not reliable data.

Here you go (it's for 2009, but it's the most up-to-date from the MTO): http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/safety/orsar/orsar09/collision.shtml (about 1/2 way down)

Your kanetix thing doesn't prove ****.

Proves nothing, especially since it claims the data is gathered by people disclosing accidents while getting driving insurance.

It most certainly doesn't prove that winter tires are not advantageous in cold weather/snow/icy conditions.

In addition to it's silly data gathering process, the study does not appear to consider the number of driving mileage by season, only the percentage of accidents by season. It is highly likely that the driving mileage in summer is much higher than in winter and as such unless you correlate accidents with mileage this study is inconclusive at best.

Toronto police stated that 54 crashes were reported/attended this morning before 10am.

I don't think there are that many on a fine weather summer's morning.

I'm confused, is this thread just one guy trolling every one over and over saying winter tires provide no measurable difference than all seasons?

if that's the case, how has it reached so many pages?

In a word, incredulity.

If you go back to page 2, you had half the people saying you didn't need snows. As well this lovely comment...

Snow tires, 4X4, AWD... none of this makes a difference if the driver doesn't know how to drive on different road conditions. The problem is GTA drivers are so use to clear roads, that they have no clue what to do when there is snow on the road. The city should stop plowing, sanding and salting the roads and make people become better drivers.

Yeah I was wondering why the heck traffic was so slow this morning.

right.. i get it, snow tires don't allow you to bend the laws of physics or give you ability where there is none.. but like most driver assisting technology out there, it stands to reason that it does have SOME measurable benefit... certainly, I don't believe that you MUST have winter tires or you will end up in a ditch... just like you MUST have ABS or you'll end up plowing into someone... The technology exists to aid the smart, sensible driver.

I have snow tires because of the amount of driving I do, and my cars traction BLOWS in the snow at the best of times... One set of snows is about the same cost as my deductible if I end up making a claim... so for me, it is an easy decision.

I found that running snow tires instead of all seasons, gave me the same degree of improvement as switching from a 2 wheel drive car to an all wheel drive car. Put both together, and you can laugh at snow covered roads.

I find that a lot of SUV/minivan owners think that they become invincible once the snows are put on, so they drive like maniacs (and end up in the ditch or rear ending people). On the other side, there is a majority of population who cannot drive no matter what car/tires they have, so they drive 50 on highway and 20 on the streets after some rain or snow. Welcome to GTA.
