Ontario should make winter tires mandatory.

This is my issue with all of these driver's aids, they encourage drivers to be worse and worse. I can just see a driver relying solely on the backup camera to see if there's something behind them without checking if there is someone coming from the side.

Some cars like trucks and suv's do need a backup camera as you can't see anything out of the back. Something like a Civic though, if you can't back it up without relying on a backup camera, you should probably take some more lessons.

All that of that tech are great tools and aids but obviously the best tools are your god given ones; brain, eyes, ears, etc. Some people's brains seem to turn off when they turn on the gadgets. Like driving your car off a cliff or into the woods because "that's where the GPS told me to go".

I'm throwing a backup camera on to the back of my truck... But that's just to make it easier to hook up the trailer, or the times I'm backing in to a spot with a tiny car behind me that I can't see in the mirrors or over my shoulder.
Completely capable of doin all this now without it, but my aftermarket head unit is already equipped so why not.

I do agree though, that if you can't do this stuff easily without electronic assists, you don't deserve a license.

Agree with all of the above.

We haven't even discussed different types of winter tires yet.
I have a set of typical winters, they work great, or at least i thought they did until i drove my dads car.
He's Mr safety guy, so he just walks into the tire store and asks for the best ones i'd assume.
His tires have those little bits of embedded plastic or something in them, they make a bunch of noise that sounds like walking on velcro.
They may as well call them mountain goat shoes, because i found the traction on ice to be comparable with pavement, it was impressive.
The only downside would be stopping too quickly, only to have some bonehead ram into the back of your car.

Rather than mandatory tires how about seasonal licences. No driving in winter with out a seasonal licence

This is a great idea CG. Just need to work on the who gets a regular licence issue first cause many who drive now shouldn't even on a dry sunny day in the summer.

Might be Bridgestone Blizzacks, they have walnut shell in the tire compound.

It's February 19 and haven't crashed yet. Haven't even come close. Large margin of error. Drive to suit conditions, all season tires are fine. No mandatory winter tire law needed. If I skid upside down into ravine b4 winter is done I will edit this post.

Same here. Even with that large dump of snow, It wasen't long before the snow ploughs did their job and the road was safe. Winter tires are a big waste of money. Invest in some some good driving lessons.

On the flip side, Last fri sudden snow storm in toronto, when leaving the Auto show, coming down Spadina Hill heading towards the Gardner On ramp, I noticed the Impala 2 cars ahead of me fishtailing on the ice part of the hill as he was trying to sudden brake. Then, while I was able to brake swiftly, checking my rear view mirror, the small SUV barrelling towards me, clearly out of control, swerving at the last second to avoid hitting me, doing a 180 and crashing into the pole.

I'll take my winter tires and all the security they add, thank you.

Fair enough. Are you in favour of a winter tire law then?

How about this idea; use a little common sense. If you're out in a horrendous white-out and are on all season tires then you can't whine, "But I only had all season radials and they couldn't handle it!" when the cop nails you with 'operation without due care and attention' after your crash.

I agree, anybody who would say that to fuzz hasn't thought it thru. That's right up there with "I didn't know the speed limit on this section of road". Doesn't work. damhik

still sucks for people like me in examples as the following

headed to vermont friday the 8th ('big storm'). conditions were very crappy on the 401. took me 5 hours-ish to get to brockville from brampton (using the 407!!!)
after i rested, fuelled and ate in brockville, they had blocked the 401.
Why? Pileup of 20-30 cars-semis eastbound... I couldve continue my way on the 401 as the pileup was more westbound... i have winter tires, and AWD my car is planted in the snow and i dont overdrive the car. Y U CLOSE HWY TO ME!?
Then had to take sideroads that couldnt handle a gazillion trucks and cars in instant traffic (thanks to google maps though i found a parallel residential street to avoid an hour of standstill traffic)

anyhow TL;DR
winter tires ftw

So you also would have crashed without them?

Outright conjecture. Typical, though

Well, since I started this thread, I learned that all GTAM people are expert drivers and do not require winter tires because they are so good and don't need the added benefit.

:laughing3:

The spirit of the OP though, was that 2 people lost their lives. Without rehashing the whole thread again, winter tires have their benefits. Perhaps if more people invested in them, we'd have less loss of life and reduced crashes.

Perhaps considering making them mandatory would be a good idea.

Carry on gtam driving experts......

Ah, so you're the guy who started this thread. That's damn slick.

Everybody knows winter specific tires perform better in winter conditions. So for the couple times you really need winter tires, let's make a law. Are you with the government, here to help us? Or just freelancing?

No, not everyone knows that. People still venture out in conditions unsuitable for the vehicle they're driving with the tires it is currently equipped with. That's where the problems arise. Lots of people are plenty capable of driving all year on all-seasons and don't have any issues. They drive according to conditions and avoid situations that might result in trouble.

There are also lots of people that are stupid. There are people driving 2 wheel drive vehicles with crappy all seasons and ignore the conditions. There are people that will go to get groceries on a snowy day when they don't need to. They'll get to the grocery store and see the plow ridge at the parking lot entrance.. but they won't stop and think hmmm.. I might get stuck in that. There are people that will drive down the highway in the two clear tire ruts and when they go to change lanes they will see the ridge of snow but they won't pause and think hmmm.. that ridge of snow might cause trouble. Then they get stuck... then they throw it into the ditch...

Snow tires might help those people because they're too stupid to help themselves. Then again, when equipped with snow tires said stupid people might enter with a false sense of security and just hit the ditch harder and/or get stuck a little deeper. There is no cure for stupidity.

That being said, refuting the benefits of snow tires is also pretty stupid. They DO offer better grip in the winter (even if it is on dry roads). Ultimately, legislating the use of snow tires is not the solution. Culling the population of stupidity is..... and believe me, the benefits of that will extend far beyond winter driving.

During the big storm the one thing that kept hitting me was how people would immediately jump all the way over to the track bare section in the fast lane, then do 30 Kmh, when the better traction is typically on the relatively untouched snow in the slow lane. I could see them fishtailing at 30 and 40 Kmh, while was free to do 60-70 Kmh in the slow lane without any issues.
