Ontario should make winter tires mandatory.

Ever driven with snow tires in the winter?
They just plain work better in cold weather, period.
The way I see it, if you plan to keep your car for 4-5 years, you're gonna need to replace the tires at some point so why don't you get a set of winter tires on steelies right away and be done with it?

I don't do snow tires either. I know what causes slides, know how much space to leave for braking. How fast to make movements. Honestly the only part that sucks about all seasons is you get stuck in the snow with no traction easier and it makes getting through intersections slower. I've seen people with snow tires going sideways. I have yet to lose control this year and yes I was at work on Friday and got home just fine thank you.

Only time I ever wished for winter tires was that morning a few weeks back when everything was coated in ice. But I doubt snow tires would have made that drive much better.

This is the first year, in the last 20, that I've had snow tires on my car. I simply haven't needed them in the Toronto area, in that time. Certainly snow tires work better, but knowing the limits of your vehicle doesn't hurt either. I would say that the majority of vehicles I saw in the ditch last Friday were other 4x4s, had snow tires, or both. Over confidence can be a dangerous thing, especially when it isn't justified.

Friday was crazy, drove from 530 am to 530 pm (ontario to vermont)

People driving at 50 in the plowed lanes while i was (safely) passing them at 80-90 in the snowed lane .... wow. subaru's awd and winter tires have a lot more respect for me now, it felt like...well... nothing was on the ground at those speeds.

crazy thing though, i stop in brockville for a well deserved gas, rest and food stop cause those conditions can get tiring quite quickly.
when i tried to get back on route, what had happened? fatal pileup. so they closed the highway down... i saw the pileup and it was scary, about 20-30 cars and semis. had to take backroads to get to destination.

even a small percentage in the change of deaths warranties it IMO. A life doesnt have a price, and once you lose it, you cant repair it or get it back, its gone.

Banning motorcycles would have a greater impact on reducing road deaths than mandatory winter tires.

Using QC as an example, a 3% reduction over 523 deaths and serious injuries a year equals 16 lives and serious injuries saved every year by mandatory winter tires use. http://www.mtq.gouv.qc.ca/portal/page/portal/Librairie/bpm/Rapport_pneus_hiver_avril2011.pdf

Banning motorcycles would result an average of 44 lives saved per year in QC over the same period, or an 8% reduction in road deaths (doesn't include serious injuries as above). http://www.saaq.gouv.qc.ca/rdsr/sites/files/12012003.pdf (p. 17)

Be careful what you wish for.

That kinda twisted my statement. And i get your point!
I wasnt talking about aborting a means of transportation, i was talking about making an existing means of transportation safer.

Seatbelts save lives. Theres a law for it. Airbags in certain cases help (sometimes dont...but thats another debate)
Should we not have a law for it because it increases the cost of said car to have it mandatorily installed? Should we ban airbags as a safety measure because they cost so much (like $4-5000)?

Simple fact:

The GTA was essentially shut down by a winter storm that's considered the worst in recent memory for Southern ON, and considered "average" by Northern ON standards. I drive the same car up here as I do in the GTA and I get around just fine. We neither salt nor brine the roads. With Ultra High Performance All-Seasons I can't even get outta the driveway, even with AWD and they are M+S. Blizzaks ftw, LM-60s on an Evo X are simply godly and i hear the WS-70 is even better for our road conditions (bad.)

It doesn't stop there. They are toying with the idea of making back up cameras mandatory on all new cars. Another brilliant idea.

If you can't drive without a backup camera, please turn in your license now.

Majority of new cars are coming already equipped with one, so it's not really a big deal.

But i agree with your statement, more gadgets = more unattentive drivers.

Banning motorcycles to save lives? Start by banning what causes the most amounts of deaths amoung adults. But that'll never happen with these corrupt governments.

Cheeseburgers???

Cheeseburgers???

And cola, BAN THAT TO....

I'm only opposed to backup cameras and parallel parking gadgets and anti tailgate alarms because it small dollars at the manufacturing level and a reasonable option when you by the vehicle new, THEN IT BREAKS outside of warranty..........

You can't back up a (faulty) rear camera equipped car by looking over your right shoulder?

Of course you can but you get a bunch of people who get used to waiting for a warning beep, to let them know that they're close to the vehicle they're parking behind, and they whack into it when the bloody thing doesn't work because they've become too lazy.

This is my issue with all of these driver's aids, they encourage drivers to be worse and worse. I can just see a driver relying solely on the backup camera to see if there's something behind them without checking if there is someone coming from the side.

Some cars like trucks and suv's do need a backup camera as you can't see anything out of the back. Something like a Civic though, if you can't back it up without relying on a backup camera, you should probably take some more lessons.

All that of that tech are great tools and aids but obviously the best tools are your god given ones; brain, eyes, ears, etc. Some people's brains seem to turn off when they turn on the gadgets. Like driving your car off a cliff or into the woods because "that's where the GPS told me to go".

I'm throwing a backup camera on to the back of my truck... But that's just to make it easier to hook up the trailer, or the times I'm backing in to a spot with a tiny car behind me that I can't see in the mirrors or over my shoulder.
Completely capable of doin all this now without it, but my aftermarket head unit is already equipped so why not.

I do agree though, that if you can't do this stuff easily without electronic assists, you don't deserve a license.
