I was replying to mauro's post about how everybody should have winter tires simply because it snowed last night. Shouldn't you point that criticism at him?

Ontario should make winter tires mandatory.

Some tires will perform better on snow, some other will perform better on ice.
Some tires will be better for touring, some will be better for tracking.
Some will have better grip in water, some will have better grip on dirt.
That simple.
You really think winter tire engineers are dumb enough not to account for things like this in their design?

I get your point, that it doesnt make sense to make them mandatory in ontario, what we get today is half the snow fall of what quebec gets almost on a weekly basis. So makes sense over there...if were getting more agressive winters though might make more sense

Winter tires are more effective on snow BECAUSE they're better at packing the snow around the tire, not DESPITE it. Snow-on-snow friction is greater than snow-on-rubber friction.

I'm not a tire engineer, but I'm certain that deeper tread and tread design are bigger factors in a quality snow tire.
You're certain of a lot of things.
I wouldn't drive my truck at 60+ in 4 wheel.
And wouldn't you know it, rubber-on-asphalt traction is better than snow-on-asphalt traction. Weird coincidence I guess.
While I don't think we should make them mandatory but, I also don't think we should compare Quebec to Ontario. Freezing rain, ice, slush and rain are very common during the winter season and while all winter tires are not created equal, I'd say most will out perform all seasons in these conditions.
Just because you can drive with all season during these conditions, doesn't mean you should.
I passed so many struggling SUVs/4x4s with all seasons last night, right along with most other cars or vehicles equiped with winter tires.

I am the cheapest SOB that I know, and even I am not cheap enough to not get winter tires.
The way I look at it, they are really no extra cost at all -- I just have two sets of tires which both last twice as long.
Out of my 20 years driving, 18 of those have been with all-seasons all year long - including four winters in North Bay. So while I know I can easily go the winter just on all seasons, I don't know why I shouldn't give myself all the advantages I can since it costs very little anyway! If I hit someone, that is my fault and my insurance will increase -- that I need to avoid. If someone hits me because I stop better than them or they don't have control, that is their fault and their insurance increases.

In a foot of snow you're not gonna go 80 in rwd. What's wrong with going 80 with 4x4 on slippery roads anyways?

most truck 4x4s are not true 4x4 in the sense that most people think....they usually dont have posi differentials and although technically all 4 wheels get power, one of the back wheels and one of the front wheel will spin.
TRUE 4x4 has locking differentials and transfer boxes....Cant turn on asphalt with those engaged without tearing up the rubber....Those are meant for true offroading.
Most pick-up and SUV tires now are designed with quiet, comfort and longetivity in mind...hence thread pattern and tire harness which doesnt work well with snow and ice.

4 wheel drive does nothing to help you stop or turn.
Its a lot of extra wear on a lot of expensive parts.
If you need 4 wheel drive to go 80.....you shouldnt be going 80.
