Ontario should make winter tires mandatory.

This is useless info for most drivers since most will be careless in winter driving. Snow tires or not.

This winter has been a no show. People who ran out and got winters must feel stupid.

Funny, winter hasn't even officially started.

Actually a couple of Fridays ago I felt like an idiot for NOT having the winter tires on yet. I was driving in Burlington and it was a mess (ice) and the summers were not fun.

Those that say they would have crashed if they didn't have snow tires sound like they didn't account for conditions. Yes snow tires are better in the snow but they shouldn't be mandatory
I dont know if i wouldve crashed, cause i had winters therefore its awesome driving all year round :D

Seriously though, i try to do a small controllable fishtail when the conditions change to give me an idea of the slip factor and i adjust accordingly.

Actually when we had the icy conditions a couple of weeks ago I came close to a crash because IMO I had the summers still on (even though they say M+S they are summers, speed rated, no siping, large tread blocks, etc.). Drove slowly up to the ramp (ramp goes down to the street) to leave the parking lot I was in. Once on the ramp I applied the brakes, ABS was trying its best but I just kept sliding down (and it was not a steep ramp). If I would have stayed on the brakes I would have been t-boned as I slid into the street (by a dump truck).

Once I saw that there was no way I was going to stop and saw the truck coming, I put it in gear and got out of there.

Would have been much less spectacular with the snows. But back to my earlier point, these were summer tires based on what they are (design and materials), BUT they still say all season M+S... Anyone number of people could have bought these thinking they were good for winter...

Still do not think they should be mandatory.

I am in the "no, should not be mandatory" camp. If we are just going to let the government do everything for us, why stop at winter tires? why not mandatory exercise, and diets, its better for you, and will help you live longer (in most cases). I have been driving over 15 years, always with all seasons. Never had an issue, even in the heaviest of snow, I was able to make my way through in my old Acura 1.5 EL. I did get snow tires the next year as someone slashed my tires and I only drove it in the winter so it made sense to just replace with winter tires. Winter tires are noticeably better, without question, no one can argue that. Would I buy them again? Only if it was the only set of tires I was going to have on my car. I have a new Subaru, and will drive it with the all seasons that it came with, and it does not have me worried. Being aware of the road conditions and driving accordingly is the real problem. Why are there so many accidents that first snowy day? Why does it seem like most drivers on the road are just seeing snow and ice for the first time? Its not because they don't have winter tires, its because they don't drive to match the road conditions. Less government involved in my life, the better.

Jus saying.....

http://www.cbc.ca/hamilton/news/story/2012/12/01/hamilton-police-respond-to-43-accidents-friday.html

Hamilton police respond to 43 accidents during Friday commute in the span of 6 hours.

“It was fairly bad,” said Staff Sgt. Emidio Evangelista........."drivers should invest in snow tires, and be more mindful of the road conditions."
"The reported snowfall total at the Hamilton Airport on Friday was 4.4 cm."

Just read this thread... i drive Hamiton to Brantford daily.. it's 36 mins to my door, that friday night took me over 3 hrs.. i drive a 4x4 and let me tell you going up the linc was a chore that night..it took me over 1 hours from king st exit to Gauge exit.. it wasn't the snow it was the ice that made it hard to drive...... #6 hwy was closed because people could't get up the hill....... Making SNOW TIRES MANDATORY is Bs and a money grab in my eyes because your still going to have people that just can't drive. hell on a normal day look at all the idiots that panic in the rain .......

Did you think the ABS would help you stop?

It helps you steer when applied properly.

Good page

Pay special attention to this point...

http://www.drivingfast.net/car-control/braking.htm#12

I remember my first experience with ABS on a 4x4 pickup... first thing I though was holy crap, this things takes longer to stop (then the previous, same size, non ABS truck)... A few weeks after I got it, I was offroad in the winter SLOWLY coming down a fairly steep hill (couple centimeters of fluff snow on fairly hard pack snow/ice) and tried to stop it..... no f'in way, went to the bottom of the hill (200-300 ft)standing on the peddle with the ABS having a fit, I never felt so betrayed by my vehicle. Still.... glad it is on my cars now (because of the wife)...

Still takes longer to stop in snow/ice...

I guess I should have accounted for conditions by predicting the future that a car would spin out into my lane in front of me.

Yup. You should account for everything other than a solid concrete wall suddenly popping up in the mmidle of your lane as you're driving. That usually doesn't happen. ;)

There was ice, no snow, gavel, or sand to speak of.

Agreed ABS in this case should have made no difference but maybe I should have also added that even with the ABS the car was starting to drift sideways under braking. In short ABS or not the tires were pucks.

Softer compound and siping should have played a positive roll.

But again these were tires that claim to be all season but should be spring/summer/fall only.

Yup. Those all-season tires sure grip well in the snow . Especially days like today huh? If you stick your nose outside you can actually smell all the burning differentials and all season rubber being laid on those side streets:lmao:.

O ya, ' it never really snows much in the winter to warrant getting a set of snows.' Classic.

Well let's be realistic, in the city if you can wait a day before going out I would agree with that statement. 99% of snow is cleared within a day, two at the most.

With that said though, only ignorant people would say all-seasons are good enough.

The snow has cleared already! Even during the night the streets were plenty driveable with the snow that fell. I have a window on the street and I was up all night, and I actually wished I could go rent a RWD car for some fun times out there!

If this is what causes enough of a driving problem for you that you couldn't get around safely on all seasons, you might need to learn how to drive. All season tires are good enough for me.

Oh noes!

With the suby buddies we went through different parking lots in industrial areas, what a blast!
Put me right back into winter mode. Adjusting my driving to the braking distance, skid tests to see how good/bad my winter tires are (it's their last season)

While transiting to another lot, there was this camaro goin like 20 km/h and skidding involuntarily with 4 flashers on ahha we all passed it speed limit (60) with no issues or skidding, awd + winter rubber = SO MUCH FUN annnnnd controool. Seriously it was ridiculous last night, cant wait to see my buddy's gopro footage.

I think i helped 3-4 cars get up 2-3% incline hills yesterday (pushing with other ppl and what not..) and the road had been plowed.
The weirdest one though was a caddy stuck on a curb sideways on a hill (the one that goes to port credit library). Dont even know how it got there...all i know is i went up and down that hill without effort yesterday !

Now i want a snow fall like that every week. That'll keep me happy :) (i feel like those husky puppies who see snow for the 1st time in the season ahah)

Would you wear running shoes to go hiking?

I'm surprised you don't realise that usage of winter tires are actually more than just for driving in snow.

I guess most people don't realize that when the snow is deep and packing snow, it just packs on to the tire so the tread doesn't make a difference since all the grooves are packed with snow.

You really think snow tires help your traction like this? I think it only helps with there is a light dusting of snow on the ground or when you drive on ice.

A good tire clears itself of snow/mud.
