Official 2012 Summer Olympic Games Thread

Would you mind clarifying why do you think that?

Your equipment costs are minimal.
For example...
Kayak K1000 requires you to have a light weight, competitive Kayak. Same goes for Canoe.
Diving required time at a Pool with the proper height diving boards.
Swimming requires time at a regulation size swimming pool.

Running just requires a somewhat properly maintained track and a stopwatch. Good shoes and that's about it...

Pretty much all sports require gym time for muscle training, so i'm gonna leave that out.

Some can be extremely high costing equipment, some can be low cost.

Now i'm in no which way an expert and could be way off.... this is just my preception, that's all.

Major costs are ensuring the athlete has time to compete and train and money to live on.

And food / supplements. Not cheap to eat how they do

National team rugby players get $1500/mth if they're carded.

That barely covers their monthly food/supplement expense and on top of that you gotta live somewhere, dress yourself, etc. Oh, and compete at the highest level. No big deal.

no wonder a lot of our top athletes leave Canada first chance they get, to hone their skills where they can better get paid for them.

hmmmm i was wondering earlier why Missy Franklin represents the states although she has dual citizenship (I could be wrong). Her gold medals could have been Canada's...

it's kinda sad that Canadian athletes don't get as much funding, recognition or popularity but still go and represent the country in front of the whole world. Jordyn Wieber, the american gymnast had a massive welcome back party when she went back to her hometown after being qualified as an Olympian and many people went and some even bought the "wieber fever" bracelets...

the girl who scored in the 92th minute that made Canada the bronze medalist is from Oakville... Wonder if she would ever get something remotely like what Jordyn got...

Missy was born in USA. She grew up in the US and has trained in the US. The only tie she really has to Canada is that her Parents are Canandian. Her life as she knows it is all American. So that's why she chose to swim for Canada. Or at least that's what she said in the interview with CTV.

As for the welcoming party for our athletes... I'm sure many of them will get big welcoming parties. I know the Canadian Women's Soccer team sure will! I'd like to be at that party for sure ;)

Although the equipment costs for running are lower than the sports you mentioned, these would be one time costs I would imagine. I'm no expert on this subject either, but I suspect most of the money needed goes towards things like food, rent, clothes, pt, trainers/coaches, etc. All ongoing expenses.

now it makes sense.

I wanna be in the party too. they deserve our loves no matter how they did in the games.

Yeah, but those costs are universal no matter where the athlete is from.

Didn't one of Us snowboarders get dinged with weed on his test in Salt Lake, and they let him have his medal anyway? How come they booted the US Judo player from the Olympics for the same infraction? One thing that's driving me nuts sitting here watching is the inconsistency of the officiating. I mean you get disqualified in swimming after the first foul start, have been for years, but when the favored swimmer foul starts, no one says boo to him as he swims back to his box to start the race. It's amazing what everyone's athletes do out there, but someone's gotta give the IOC's head a shake cuz some of their rules are way too harsh. These people train for years for those few minutes of a race I'm sure we could wait for two foul starts before disqualification

Well said. Couldn`t have put it better. They need to move with the times and get real.

Watched the womens mountain bike this morn.I think i would be exhausted even if mine had a motor!

Women's speed walking is on... WTF. They all look malnourished, and the sport is pretty stupid.

I saw another sport this morning, don't know what's it called. Its basically soccer but using your hands.
I was double face-palming

Yeah, handball. Sort of like soccer, but using your hands, and like basketball, you get 3 steps... Sort of like ultimate frisbee I guess... Stupid sport too.
