$27.5 million over 5 years for Grabovski.

He's not worth $5.5 a year.

Saw that. But..what alternative do they have? He'll just walk away and they'll get nothing. At least now they can trade him in the summer if they choose to. Can't just let him walk..

I like him..I hope he stays frankly.

Most leaf fans I know can't even afford to go see a game so I don't know if the fans would really effect the bottom line. Considering the entire lower bowl is owned by corporations I think that is where a good chunk of the lack of passion lies. Leaf games are the new boardroom to schmoose clients. Half the people down there aren't even watching the game. You have to hit the 300 level before you start to see real fan passion. The type of passion that is along the glass in every other arena.

There's been some talk (although it won't ever happen), to make corporate spending on sports tickets non-deductible for tax purposes. Frankly, I think this is a great idea. On the down side, it would immediately destroy the profitability of most of the Canadian NHL teams, which have business models heavily dependent on corporate ticket sales. On the positive side, in order to survive, they'd have to offer a good product to justify individuals spending their after-tax dollars on a game. We would see much more emphasis on giving fans what they want, which is, of course, winning. Winning teams would make money, losing teams wouldn't.

But that's just a pipe dream, I know.

When you are paying the likes of Kesler and Ribero less money.......

One half decent offensive season garners a huge wage?

Let him walk, spend the savings on someone that can play a two way game, or maybe a #1 centreman, or maybe a goaltender that can stop a beach ball, or maybe hotter cheerleaders....:)

You've got that right. Everyone knows that a prerequisite to winning a championship is having a good goalie. I can't think of a team that has won without a great, top-notch goalie. That should really be the first priority for the leafs - spend what it takes to get great goaltending, and build the team from the back towards the front.

the leafs have cheerleaders???

Marlies have:

Yeah, I dunno..it's an entertaiment expense..do you start legislating what entertainment is? Maybe prevent them from buying seasons tickets..but does that apply to the TSO? It's a slippery slope..

Well, if they have him under contract and can trade him at the draft for a #1 pick, that's better than nothing, isn't it? They won't have to pay him and they get something back. If they don't do anything, they get nothing for him..<Robert DeNiro> NUH-THINNGGG!!!!</Robert DeNiro> :-)

Golf is already excluded, so yes, they do legislate what entertainment is. There are also restrictions on deducting meals and other entertainment expenses. To exclude sports tickets would not be anything new or precedent-setting.

Every slope is a slippery slope. That's not really a good excuse to not try to get it right.

Really?? They've excluded golf??? Wow..I used to get a lot of freebies..I wonder if they were actually paying out of pocket!! :-) I take it back.

ANd they're out, time to take off the leafs sticker off the back trunk.

This is the problem with NHL and Leafs particular. You create a team where you come to a conclusion that you have to overpay for a guy like Grabovski, because he's one of your best players, if not the best on most nights. He wouldn't be on any other playoff team in the division and thus they would not pay him that much. But in Tor everything gets skewed by the widely available mediocrity.

Is he a good player? Yep a solid second liner with a speed and ability to create chances who is not afraid of going to the corners. But he's not worth the money they gave him nor his importance should be as high as it is on this team.
