They aren't wrong. Comments like that, from someone in his position, can result in successful appeals. That is very likely. A friend of mine is a gun collector and even makes his own ammo. He has probably 40 weapons and is also in a gun club where they do target practice with big and powerful pistols. He told me there are a ton of LE in the "sport". Not that there's anything wrong with that.
While it's not usual for police to act outside their specific area, all police officers are empowered to act as law enforcement officers anywhere in the Province, under the Police Services Act. This sort of thing could happen if they suspected local police involvement in crime, were having difficulty obtaining assistance, etc..This case is incredibly strange. What were police from Toronto doing executing a search warrant so far away from the city? Why weren't the OPP, who knew this guy consulted? It sounds like some kind of bizarre execution. The gunsmith was a well known, well liked person. There better be some answers to this one and soon. Some are suggesting the customer was an undercover cop.

It's good to hear that they didn't buy the, "I chased him with a pipe and had to defend myself" defence, then the higher court didn't find any reason for appeal.At least this one is finally over. Theriault is going to have to serve (at least part) of his nine month sentence and that should get the prick permanently off the force. Ontario appeal rejected. Supreme Court appeal rejected. End of the road. Bastard.

He didn't even get in trouble for bashing him with the pipe. After the pipe bashing, poor guy ran away unarmed to try to get help and Theriault chased him down again and continued the beating sans pipe.
Internal investigation. Wouldn't want to impune the impeccable character of the fine boys in blue.
