Didn't the judge chastise some cops for perjury? I recall some cover up and thought it was about not have a taser when one was actually available.
From what I remember the Taser wasn't available until very shortly after Yatim was fatally shot. I remarked at the time that I thought it interesting that the officer with the Taser tasered a corpse and was wondering if they were trying to set up a narrative about what happened, despite there being multiple cameras recording the scene.

The cop that tasered him testified right before Forcillo..

Yatim still had a switchblade “firmly in his grasp” and “refused or declined” officers’ demands to drop it.

Dead people can neither accept or decline.

"Stop resisting" is a core tenet of police training. By not showing active compliance, he was resisting. The fact that he was dead does not factor into Forcillos ant brain.

City council is kicking the Hamilton police budget back over the net , they think a 20 million dollar increase may be out of line.

The budget included a boat for the marine unit you could land a helicopter on. Seriously.

88% of budget is salary , 17% of the force is on some sort of leave. okay then.

Toronto Police is putting out ads warning people that response time is slow. Correction, scaring people about response times. A photo shows a guy with a gun apparently hijacking someone.

They sent out flyers with the same message, a 23 minute response time.

Think about it .................................If they cut the response time in half for an armed hijack would the perp or car still be there in 11.5 minutes?

How many new cops would be hired vs how many existing ones would be getting fatter paychecks?

Has TPS shown how more more money would reduce response times and to what?

Will we get to third world status where the police only show up if you slip them some protection money?

The solution is simple. Average cop salary should be at least 50% below where it is now. For the same money, that gives you at least 50% more boots on the ground and 50% faster response time. Nobody wants to go that way as the union will lose its crap and existing mouth breathers will start a mutiny.

I don’t think cops are over paid . Nobody spits at me or shoots in my direction at work.
Are the expectations for current policing a bit light? Um yeah . There are both current serving cops and retired cops in my larger social circle . The retired guys are disgusted and the current guys take sick days to build decks and fences .

What other job gets you over 100K in less than five years with a high school education and no ambition? Drop salary for the average beat cop to 70K and your applicant pool remains identical. Hell, drop existing cops to 70k and see what happens. Most don't have any better option. Golden handcuffs. That means we are paying too much.

In my job there are consciences if someone messes up, That usually don't involve a paid vacation for months or yrs on end.

The humanity occupations (medical personnel, police, teachers) are a double edged sword. If you don't pay enough, good responsible people don't apply because responsible people have to be responsible to their families as well, providing them with decent living conditions and education.

If you pay them too much you get people in it only for the money and benefits.

Right now there is a feeding frenzy going on and a large percent of it is due to insecurity. Housing costs, interest rates, ICE becoming obsolete, $30,000 batteries, foreign workers, outsourcing, MIC, climate change, gender options, drugs, etc. It is totally understandable that people want to grab as much as they can right now. If they don't need it later they can give it back.

It doesn't help that we have a money incinerator running the country. Follow the leader. Be ridiculous. It's working for him personally.

The cops aren't there to give you a Knight In Shining Armour response when you call. They're there to come by sometime after the fact and draw a reasonably accurate chalk outline around your corpse.

You get a lot of Bulletheads on TPS, especially in the union - there to throw their weight around.
I had one threaten me because I rolled my eyes at him when he was being a dick while on pay duty.
Speaking of pay duty, what a way to fatten up the pay cheque - stand around and look important.
The good cops are busy putting all their fingers in a leaking dike, the uniformed lifers often don't care any more.

Don't forget the little orange cones...

What other jobs get you punched, kicked, spat upon, and possibly shot? I don't envy their jobs and I don't begrudge their pay scale. If you want people who want to supplement their pay by doing illegal acts then the easiest way is to pay them dirt, for a dirty job. That we have some officers who are still willing to do that given their pay means, to me, that they need to be held to a higher standard because of their positions and stomped on with jack-booted feet, when they get out of line. Until then they need to be treated with due respect.

The question of the inquest is, "How do we make policing better?" It seems rather simple, to me. Stop hiring people who have the American cowboy attitude. Use psychological testing to help insure that you're not hiring thugs who are looking for a chance to flex, or line their pockets. Move to a more Scandinavian model of policing and away from the American one that we're drifting to. Look at almost anything in the legal system of the United States and compare it to what we do in Canada, using statistics, and you'll see that we're already far more successful than tey are. Moving in that direction, as we seem to be now, is idiotic.

While that doesn't change public expenditure by much (although I am pretty sure impact is still significant with paid duty cops for municipal and transit projects), that is a layer of red tape, inflationary pressure and excess that could be cut in a day. There should be no reason for a paid duty cop at a crazy daily rate for a construction project. A grunt with a vest and some traffic training can do the job at least as well for a fraction of the money. That makes every project cheaper to complete.

That wonderful old adage, "When seconds count the police are only minutes away."
