The USA isn't the only country that has a big gun / population ratio. The problem is that the USA seems to use their guns as a first resort not a last. Keep in mind that collectors and super collectors with dozens of guns skew the numbers

So cop salaries are rising very rapidly and education and training requirements are dropping. I'm sure that makes sense to a politician. Now would be the perfect time to admit that most hires belong to the goon squad and commensurate with the lower bar to entry, compensation has been adjusted to compensate. What is a high school education job worth? Probably less than half of current compensation. I have no problem with paying the rockstars more but the goons don't deserve it.

When you give people a position of power and then pay them a low wage, it will result in increased use of that power in illegal ways. There will always be some who take advantage of power for their own benefit, but do you really want to make things even worse?

I do think, however, that lowering the bar is a bad idea. We don't need American style policing, any more than we need American style gun laws.

You could pay them 70 instead of 120 and they would be the best paid high school graduates. If the argument is money beats corruption there is no limit to that program. I'm not arguing for 30k here.

Alternatively…you can have real consequences for those found to be corrupt and doing illegal things.

No paid vacations. No protections from the unions.

Fired on the spot, and any damages come out from the retirement pension / union fund.

The curse of the humanities salary problem: Pay them too much and you get money grubbers. Pay them too little and you don't get responsible people.

i think what had happened is for some positions you needed to have a bachelor's degree to become a cop. which gets you booksmart people but doesn't guarantee they're street smart
but this is going in the complete opposite direction. but as people keep joking, seems like you don't need much education to lead a province either ;)

Current Provincial leadership reminds me of the movie adaptation of "Harrison Bergeron."

The problem with getting "street smart" people is frequently how they acquired those "street smarts", and how it translates to their service.

I imagine police recruitment has one of the same problems EVERYONE else has, that is the great resignation. There are labour shortages everywhere and pretty low (some say record low) unemployment. Population pyramid. Supply and demand, more here means less somewhere else....

Add to this the bad feelings from defund the police and general race relation issues. Then add on to that internal issues such as actual racism, sexism, blue line, internal criminals, protecting bad cops.... The general bad reputation of policing.

I do not see how changing education requirements fixes any of the above in a meaningful way.

On the first point doing more with less people is the answer for pretty much everyone. Electronics, surveillance, AI.... Second paragraph, is a much harder problem to solve...

When I left Aus about 15 yrs ago, you couldnt drive more then 3kms without seeing a cop doing random breath tests or speed traps etc. Last time I was there I saw 1 police car in 4 weeks. The Speed cameras, red light cameras, seat belt cameras, cell phone cameras etc etc etc are doing all the work on the roads now.

Good grief!
I was talking to a newly retired cop and his opinion of degreed recruits wasn't the best. He felt a lot wanted to move up quickly and sneered at the beat stuff. On the other hand if we were to go after white collar crime the higher education is needed. As long as they aren't bent they're ok by me.

indeed. We are incentivized to pay them well because that lowers the risk of corruption. Ever been pulled over in Thailand? $50 gets you off, right in the pocket.
