Is no ABS a deal breaker on a first bike?

Riders are underpowered much more than bikes.
If you only plan on having the bike for a year or two, then you won't have learned to ride the thing properly, unless your initials are something like MM, VR etc. 30 hp is plenty enough to get into HTA172, especially with the new 40 over rules.
The other issue is that there's a remote possibility at some point while you still own the bike, the government/insurance company, might mandate ABS for M2 riders; courses are pretty much mandated now, but the law hasn't caught up yet.
They could mandate it for new bikes made maybe but old ones would still be able to be sold. Like classic cars with no air bags etc. So you think a cb 300f would be good? Might go for that one then. I heard it has a weird first gear so it’s hard to maneuver

It’s not a weird first gear…it’s just a short first gear. Same with my 500 (hit about 45kph or so screaming in first).

the 250/300 will be screaming in first around 30-40kph (can’t remember).

Talk to @MacDoc as he’s got one now down in Australia. He’s an experienced rider and I bought his 500X and he had a 1000cc also and can provide you some insight. His thread is in the ‘Down under on the KLR…’ something something in the Cruising section.

Small beginner bikes often have a very short first few gears that seem weird when compared to cars and bigger bikes. They have very little torque, the gearing helps new riders, less stalling and a little more punch at low speeds. It won’t seem weird to a new rider.

Just buy that white bike, enough talking, this debate will drag for another 5 pages and get you nowhere. People managed to ride non-abs bikes and cars for decades, and still do. Get some miles under your belt, and when you upgrade, get one with abs.

OP has already bought the bike in their mind, this was a post seeking validation of the decision.

My sv650 had no abs and i was fine..

You probably should get a bike with one though

I haven’t really. I’m still looking. I thought there would be a one sided answer about abs but it’s either “you don’t need it you’ll be fine” or “you’ll need it or you’re gonna crash” lmao

If they keep delaying, they wont be able to buy it in the store. If it really is this well-priced cream puff that they think it is, it will go quickly.
It’s actually technically not for sale yet. They got it as a trade in and I kinda know the owner so he told me about it. Everything is perfect about it but the abs. Either gonna get this one or the Honda cb 300 prob bc that one has abs

Honestly I think you're kind of overthinking it. My next bike happens to have ABS but I, along with everyone else that rides, have been fine for years without ABS. People have been riding for a few decades now without ABS and have been just fine. It's a new feature, sure it'd be nice to have but in my opinion definitely not a necessity.

Thanks. That’s what I’m thinking too. I just hear that I need it or else it would be a lot more dangerous on forums. It’s either “you don’t need it” or “you’re gonna crash without it” lol

Got caught in the rain going north today and remembered this thread.

Jammed on the brakes when it was clear prior to rain just to see traction. Practically didn’t feel the ABS.

Hit the brakes in the rain and felt it pulsing WAY earlier.

I’ll stick with ABS brakes.

As everyone here has basically said…it’s a nice to have. You’re not automatically going to crash….it’s just another tool to help you stay upright.

I would say it's closer to about ten decades. Harley been at this well over a 100 years. Not sure when their last non ABS was built.

I know the extra power seems attractive but really ...are you going to drag race other 300s or a KLR650 ? 🥴
The high revving alternatives might be fun if you are willing to keep them well up in the powerband where the extra low end torque of the CB300 makes it an easy bike to ride and it certainly keeps up with traffic ( tho maybe not Toronto fast lane in rush hour ).

The ABS will let you push the limits of braking without getting you in trouble even in the wet plus will add to the resale value.

I put 300 km on my CB300F today on everything from 100kph sweeper highways, to insane twists on the Gillies ( 210 curves in 19km ), rough pavement then a tiny bit of dirt two track. Appreciated having the ABS even tho did not kick in at all.....I have 57 years riding and ABS only in last 15 years so muscle memory for threshold braking is extensive ....rarely did ABS kick in but both times was a save the day situation.
Yeah the 300 it takes a bit of extra shifting but it is light and agile and much fun.

No, ABS is not a deal breaker but ......the 300 singles have their own appeal ( I rode a BMW310 for an afternoon ) and ABS soon enough will be mandated ( might even save you some insurance now ).

my 2cents.

I do also like the looks of the ninja a bit better however I also like the cb 300f. Can I ask how you find the power? I’m 5’10 160 lbs. if you have a passenger how is it? I hear the single piston isn’t that tourquey and the first gear is really short which makes small maneuvers hard

Singles will always have more torque than a similar displacement twin. I'm 5' 10 and 100 lb more than you and no it's not my CBF1000 but it is more than adequate for the mixed riding I do here in Australia where even 10 over can cost you big $$. Mine is single seat anyways,
No idea what they are talking about on small manuevers.
Short first gives you a nice jump on traffic and in theory actually better slow speed capability but you have to have good throttle hand control. The six speed is fine and keeps revs down to 6k at 100 kph in 6th.

Nice. I might end up buying a cb then. Only issue is that I heard they have a crankshaft problem but as long as the recall was done it should be good. Thanks for the info!
