Importing a Motor Vehicle To Canada (the be all end all)

With the tie down straps...where in the bed of the van or pickup can you attach the tie downs? I can only picture a flat floor and walls....pic? lol

Cargo vans have a 'frame' inside, basically there is square tubing going around the cargo area, so you attach tie downs to the holes in that tubing. It's very convenient. Many trailers and pickup trucks have rings built into the corners of truck beds.

Someone else PM'ed me what is apparently the solution to this - for some reason, they couldn't post in this thread themselves (so the other purpose of this post is to find out if there's anything wrong with the thread ...)

"Here's a link explaining that you can pre-purchase a Special Permit (similar to a Temporary Vehicle Registration...both $15, but Special Permit is required for Out-Of-Province vehicle purchases)

http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dan...cle/temp.shtml

It allows you to be able to drive your vehicle to licencing offices and mechanics to get the certification done (without having to tow your vehicle everywhere)."

So there ya go ...

I don't get it, why is ontario being so accomodating in aiding the purchase of a vehicle from the states via a special permit.

Hi,
Noob here in this whole exporting/importing business. Did some reading today on the internet and here (but couldn't read all 52 pages).
I want share what I gathered and for you to correct me please and thank you.
Found a nice looking 2008 Honda CBR600RR in the state of New York.

My main concern is what all forms and paper work that I have send to the border 3 days before I pick up this bike.

As it states I will require to send additional information to the fax number (To which number? I don't know yet.) of Lewsiton bridge boarder. I actually called that boarder and they put me through robot. Basically it said that I have email the following everything to buffalovinnyoffice@dhs.gov
Which one is? Fax or email?

- Bike description, model, year, VIN#,title and bill of sale.
Now for title and bill of sale question. Do I have to tell the seller to scan both and email/fax it to me? So I can send everything off to the border?

I already checked at RIV that this bike is admissible and can be brought up to Canada. Actually it says all models.

Also will have to get in contact with US Honda to get them to send me manufacturer’s recall clearance letter. Does this go by regular mail? I know that I don't need this piece of paper at the border but after.

How did you guys usually paid our American sellers? Cash or certified cheque ?

Noob questions but I gotta start somewhere.

When I did mine, it was emailed to buffalovinnyoffice@dhs.gov. All you really need to do is e-mail the VIN number to this email and they will provide you with a confirmation that you can import the vehicle.

You only need to provide the balance of the documents when you are crossing the border, so you don't have to worry too much. What you could do is get the seller to bring the bike in to perform all recalls if they have not yet already done so, and in the meanwhile, get them to get a copy of the recall clearance letter indicating that all recalls have been completed. It must be printed on their company letter head with the model number, year, vin number and everything. Check RIV's website to get the full list of required things on the recall letter.

I paid my motorcycle out via cash, certified cheque probably works but makes it hard on both ends cause you'll have to go to the bank together to ensure that it won't bounce. The other guy can't tell if it is a real cheque and if it is good, so you'll have to go in to cash it in.

Good info right there.
Can I send the border that email with VIN today? But realistically I want only pick up the bike in 2 weeks?

I think for manufacturer’s recall clearance letter will just call Honda and see what they say. I doubt this dude would wanna take it to the dealer but not sure.

And again about Title and bill of sale....I guess I don't even have to email that to border 3 days prior the pick up. Am I only bringing to Lewiston bridge when I'm with the bike.

Confused a bit.

I bought an off-road bike from a guy in New Hampshire. I used a broker - Anna from Kingsview Customs who was excellent to deal with. I also used Andrew from M.A.D. Shipping transport the bike from New Hampshire to King City. Both were very reliable, reasonably priced and easy to get a hold of when needed.

Guy, just got the worst news ever!

i did all the required paper work and stuff.

Called US Honda and asked them for recall clearance letter. Explained why and for what. So since I'm trying to bring the bike from US to Canada they don't support that. They call it grey market. Pretty much they don't want me bringing this bike over to another country.
Really?!

So now I sent a message to the seller to call and fight for that letter cause otherwise our deal is off. Unless someone can tell me how to get around it.

So yeah don't call yourself and try to get this letter. %*^*&^*(%%*%%!!!!!

You can get a dealership to print off their service record for the bike. RIV will accept this as it shows whether or not there are any outstanding recalls on your bike.

Huh? You don't need no letter from Honda. If you search this thread, either I or someone else already posted a link to HONDA website, where you punch in a VIN of a Honda bike, and it will tell you whether the bike has recalls against it or not. You print out the results and show them at the border. That's all you need. How do I know? I imported my Honda last year.

EDIT: search function is your friend. http://www.gtamotorcycle.com/vbforu...all-end-all)&p=1602881&viewfull=1#post1602881

Lol please don't start with this Search stuff. I did, and I read quit a bit of this thread but not all 50+ pages. Thanks for the info still. What I did earlier is called RIV and they ran the VIN # and said I'm all good.

Well he found it with a search. And why wouldn't you read all the pages? Would you rather spend your time calling Honda or dealerships in the states to fight for your letter?

Seriously, the info is here. If you're not willing to simply read it, then good luck with your purchase.

Wow, take it easy guys. Sorry for being a noob in importing/exporting, have to start somewhere with questions. That's why this is a forum. Don't put me on death row here. I wasn't reading just this thread, checked out a bunch of other websites.

-So far with paper work I have emailed the info to the boarder of Lewsiton bridge with the info of the bike and they sent me the confirmation reply within an hour. So that was done yesterday and I printed it out.

-Printed the first post in this thread since it has a lot of good info.

-Printed out the actual add from Caraigslist

-Printed out all the photos of VIN label and other stickers on the bike that seller sent to me.

-Confirmed with RIV that motorcycle doesn't have any recalls on it. They supplied me with confirmation number.

-Printed confirmation that says this specific motorcycle with the following VIN # does not have any lien on it.

-Printed out the form Transport Canada (Section 8- Motorcycles) where it says that all models of Honda bikes are Admissible in Canada.

-Also one member on here emailed 2 forms that he had to fill out when he brought his bike over (not everyone had to do these forms as it seems).
1) "Odometer and Damage Disclosure Statement"
2) "Statement of Transaction" DTF-802
Filled them as much as I could without the actual seller as he has to put some signatures there.

-Printed 2 copies of "Motorcycle Bill of Sale" templates. One for the owner to keep and for me to show at the boarder. Both forms will have our signatures. (Anyone care to post which BoS form they used?)

I might have printed/done some extra stuff but I want to be completely covered without any issues.

Now I hope that the seller has all the right papers for me. So a couple questions.

What to do at the border?

- produce your title documents, registration and sales receipts.

I guess it's pretty straight forward with Title documents. Boarder officer told me over the phone to bring the original Title paper from the seller.

Registration paper: She said that it's a good thing if I would have a copy of it from the seller.
Sales Receipts: I understand that it's just Bill of Sale?

Thank you.

dicta...

For God's sake it is border, not boarder - unless of course you are faxing all the information to someone who rents a room from you.

Stop being lazy and read the thread.

Stop being lazy and read the thread.

Not being lazy at all. Just want somebody to double check. Don't want to make mistakes.

No offense but this site seems a little "rude/frustrated"? And I'm like on 10 other automotive forums. Just a quick comparison here.

Every question you ask has been answered in this thread and/or the RIV site. And I'm sure it's been answered on the other 10 forums you're on as well. You just can't be bothered doing the work. If you find one piece of info you requested that isn't on any of the 11 forums you go on then I will apologise for calling you lazy. You won't mind if I don't hold my breath though, will you?

"Can't be bothered doing the work." Ha! That's a funny one. Trust me I called border/RIV, numerous calls and emails to sellers in the states. And still I just want that buddy check on my steps so this goes as smooth as it can.
