Read the last few pages.

Picked up my bike yesterday from Michigan, at the canadian border the agent told me i can ride the bike without plates on it but had to keep Form 1 on me, the form will serve as "temporary plates" until i do the federal inspection and can register the bike.
Is this correct??? I tripled checked with her and she said it was fine as long as i had form 1

Seems highly illegal to me, but i would quadruple check dat ****. Also you would need insurance.

LOL.... i actually did i called MTO and they said no. :( Sooo the agent was trying to **** with me or something maybe she was jealous? Now i gotta figure out how to get it back on my truck................sighhh

Just imported a 2012 kawasaki concours. I read through the whole 50 pages of this thread. I did everything required. I flew to North Carolina, pick up the bike and rode it back the long way through the Tail of the Dragon. Fantastic!
Couple of points that I learned ( and many have already been made on previous pages )
1. You must fax or email the title( if used ) or certificate of origin ( if new ) to the US customs at border minimum 72 hours before. Make sure that you print a fax confirmation page and present it to the border officer. I had to go through Detroit because I had to come back on Sunday and they are open 24/7. Buffalo border is not. Make sure that you call to confirm the receipt of fax if it is Detroit. Although when I did call, the agent didn't care and just told me to bring the fax confirmation paper. Detroit also didn't care about the bill of sale either or registration papers.
2 When you get to Detroit, the address for the Fort Street Cargo facility takes you to Fort Street if you are using GPS and there is no entrance there. Head towards the Bridge to Canada and there is a sign that takes you to the gates of the Cargo Facility. Must pull upto gate and it will open. When you walk in to the main building, turn off cell, leave all bags outside or you'll piss off the officers and that is not good.
3. Canadian side is friendlier, though do not try to lie about price etc. or they'll question you. For me 5 seperate officers questioned about the bike at different times. 'where did you buy it?' ''how much did you pay?' 'how come so little?' just tell truth and you'll be fine.
4. they offer to fill out the RIV forms there or you can do it at home but there is no fee so I just let them fill out form. Pay the RIV fee and 5% tax. Then you are free to go home.

About temporary plates, I got NC 30 day temp plate for $25 ( dealer did it for me ). Though it is only $10 I heard. But who has time to go and get that when for $15 extra, the dealer does it for you.

States differ in what they do. Eg. I was talking to a dealer in Michigan and he said you have to pay state tax there. Not cool. Also wanted $300 for temp plate because he said you actually have to get a full michigan plate, unless you trailer it back or hire a shipping company. Make sure about state taxes and temp plate if you plan to ride the bike back.

I think that is all. Any questions, PM me and I'd be happy to answer.

Ride safe!

PS> Completed the Federal Inspection at Canadian Tire. Real easy, 5 minute visual inspection, no cost! Registered bike with Ontario MOT, got plates and sticker, paid PST. Now all done. Overall, I saved $5500 compared to buying here. And that includes my flight to, cab fare, gas, lodgings and meals. Recommend highly!!

I imagine they would give you a hard time regardless. I mean you're saving several thousand $ sometimes. Ask them how much should I have paid? Or how much is this bike here in Canada? You'll get shrugs or crickets. They kept me for about an hour trying to disprove how much I paid. Here's the receipt, good luck with that!

I just want to say I finally imported my bike today and what a smooth smooth process there was nothing to it when you cross at lewiston.
I arrived at 830 this morning and I was back across the canadian side by 1030 awesome

I Have a 2002 Indian Chief motorcycle.....not admissable in Canada because Gilroy Indian is no longer in business and we can not get the clearance letter from them.....therefore not able to register the bike. If anyone has any info on this, or can give me any insight please let me know. I'd appreciate any input!

Isn't Polaris now looking after Indian motorcycles? You would need to contact them or go to Polaris,s website and see if theres a recall section.
Worth a try?

Hey guys...i've read some of this thread and still have a few questions. I'm looking to get a bike shipped from conneticut. I got a really good rate shipped to buffalo because he's already doing another bike. 300 bucks! Anyways...I've read you have to fax the border the paper work on the bike 72 hours before you try and bring it over. How do I get this done if the bike technically isn't in my posession until I pick it up in Buffalo? Whats the easiest and safest way to pay the seller seeing as I will not be meeting him in person?

I guess the seller has to fax the required info/paperwork the the border services?

I've posted in a few other places asking for advice but long story short I payed for my bike (still sitting in connecticut) and the shipper I had a deal with that I found on uship.com ****ing screwed me on the day of shipping saying he can't pick it up now because his truck was full...******! Sufficed to say I am now out the money I payed for the bike, I've already payed and arranged a customs broker and the border has been notified of me bring the bike over but I need a shipper!

Can someone recommend a decently priced one or do they know of a place to rent a pickup truck with unlimited km's so I can just go get the damn thing myself? Any helpful responses are greatly appreciated!

You do not need to rent a pickup. Call U haul in Conneticut and reserve a motorcycle trailer for one way to Canada. Tell them you want a motorcycle trailer it has a built in chock, you will have to bring your own tiedowns.
Go down and pick up the trailer then go get your bike and haul it home.
This is one way to do it.

thats a good suggestion but I dont have a tow vehicle......my car doesnt have a hitch

We rented a van from Discount (I believe Enterprise was another option, but double-check that). Bought ramps from Canadian Tire, tie-downs (including Canyon Dancer). Bike fits into the van perfectly, you will need two people to load/unload. You can also rent a pickup truck, but pickup bed is higher than van.

With the tie down straps...where in the bed of the van or pickup can you attach the tie downs? I can only picture a flat floor and walls....pic? lol
