Icemageddon 2013

We were one of the three day crowd, with power only back on late yesterday.

Funny enough, we didn't have a thermometer on hand but my wife wound up measuring the temp in a funny way. As soon as she booted up her computer she ran a temp check; it came back 11 degrees. LOL

Last night was damn cold, so pretty glad the power came back on just in time.

lol, that's an awesome temp check :)

Glad your power came back in time for last night! Merry Christmas.

Is anyone still w/ out Cable/Internet? ROGERS seems to still have outage pockets in the Yonge-Bathurst corridor. Going to hate to see my 4G Data bill next month...

It's been pointed out that as nobody in authority declared a state of emergency, that homeowners cannot file an insurance claim on a hotel stay.

Meanwhile 42 Manitoba Linesmen are working in TO on Christmas Day for a non-emergency. Where is the respect for the Manitoba taxpayer? (sarcasm)

Only idiots seem to wanna run for this job. Last time around an idiot declared a state of emergency when he shouldn't have. This time around the idiot didn't declare a state of emergency when he should have.

I'm not convinced that a declaration of emergency was necessary. What for? To enable people to claim their hotel costs? I mean we got help from surrounding areas in the end. I don't know of anyone claiming that a declaration of emergency would have had any meaningful impact in speeding up the repairs to power lines and such.

We didn't get as much help as could have been released, eg. federal help and funds.

It also sends the message to people without power even now that their problem is understood to be a real problem.

To your first point, getting more help doesn't necessarily mean that services would be returned sooner, or at least not in any significant way. Of course it could have improved things too, but declaring an emergency shouldn't be based on the mere hope of making a positive impact.

On the second point, IMO declaring a state of emergency shouldn't be used as a feel-good measure to appease people who feel ignored.

There wasn't a state of emergency. If anything I hope people learn that this **** can happen and you should be prepared for such outcomes and not going to home depot the day after the storm to buy supplies and salt.

From what I saw yesterday there are going to be plenty of homes left without power for another 4 + days.

Too many home owners arent even aware that once hydro does make it to their area they wont be hooked up until their side has been cleared by ESA.

If power going down in the dead of winter isn't an emergency I don't know what is. Maybe "state of emergency" is a different animal?
All hands on deck, I say.

Perhaps an emergency should be for when all regular activity is halted so that efforts can be focused on the disaster at hand. Like the flood in AB. In this case, it made sense for life to carry on as usual as much as possible, while offering the maximum support for those who were left in the cold. Just throwing the idea out there, never really though of it before.

Lower Scarborough power went out here at 2am Saturday came back Tuesday morning at 8:30 house got down to 8c left all taps running a bit had roaring fire going and it was damn cold! Merry Christmas and thanks for the electricity!

I can only assume that there was enough crack to go around certain households in the GTA. Therefore there was no "emergency". No late night mercy missions for Mr Lisi.

Since none of us know what the guidelines are to declare a state of emergency, let's just blame it on Ford and we can all feel better about it instead of continuing to talk out of our *****.

Just saying
