Icemageddon 2013

World is upside down, everything seems counter intuitive. Riding a roller coaster of emotions just skimming this thread. Luckily I'm in a small unaffected zone with minimal power loss( minutes). I can't really explain it but I'll try. I'll need graph paper, flow chart, sharp pencil and hand held abacus.

What's abacus? We kids have smartphones & TI 85

Here is some pics from my phone

That is another reason I don't like large trees next to my house

Just got back from shopping at cappy tire. Salt was sold out at 2 locations, propane was sold out & I see people buying bbq grills, wtf? Hope they don't poison themselves

Been out since saturday night and just got power back a couple hours ago (Yonge & Steeles area). Downed trees in front of my driveway and neighbourhood streets. Looks about the same everywhere I've been to this weekend. I just moved into this house a month ago and it's the first time I've had gas appliances. Love it.

I went to Canadian Tire, and about 12 gas stations - all out of salt.

I ended up scraping all the ice off my parents' driveway with an ice chopper - approximate size of 3 cars wide by 3 cars deep. Took about 5 hours.

That's where sand comes in useful. Also, if you got a wood fireplace, ashes work great, just don't overdo it as they're dirty.

Power went out sat around dinner time. Got it back today around 4 pm. My house was down to 6 degrees. Glad that's over

Good for you, I just used a 3lb hammer for the stairs

We just got lucky that the temperature didn't go into deep freeze mode as there would be a lot of burst pipes in people's homes right now.

Yup, had sand too. Used it on sections where the ice was just too stubborn to remove.

It helps with the traction, but I really didn't want any ice on my parents' driveway for health/safety reasons (they are both over 65), and that it's supposed to rain/snow more very the next day.

Rock salt might be sold out everywhere but a lot of places (Lowes, Home Depot) have water softener salt. Same stuff minus the rocks and dirt. Of course they will deny it and say it will ruin your driveway, but really - 99.7% pure salt, better than rock salt really. Definitely better than nothing.

Oops, looks like i spoke too soon. Got into my Jeep and it was showing -16C. If i had no power id be definitively worried about burst pipes.

The trees in my neighborhood are about 3-4 ft tall. No damage possible.
Same here, I think a branch fell on a squirrel's head, that's the extent of damage here in brooklin

This is where newer subdivisions like mine are great...No mature trees yet to do any damage.

I feel sorry for the Newcastle man and his mom who died from CO from a generator in their attached but not direct access garage. I guess it found a crack and seeped through or something.

I'm amazed at how long all your places and my mom's too held heat for. My 65 year old house was already down to 14 C on the main floor after only probably 12 hours? Drafts and cracks and antique insulation.
