How would you deal with a condenscending coworker?

Maybe your co-worker just doesn't like you.

Thank you for the laugh kind sir lol

Just sack up dude. You're going to run into this your entire carrer until you're the boss. Half of the job is being good at the job, the other half is how you deal with coworkers. You don't get to pick your peers like you pick your raid party.

If it's temp work, chances are you will never have to work for/with the guy again but it's pretty much a given you will have to work for/with the exact same a'hole personality many more times.

I don't think being co-op, black, Asian, female, gay, whatever should be a reason to not get basic respect. And besides, this is ONE coworker, not the world I'm bothered about.

What is this "basic respect" that you want?
Exactly what is the problem? Give some examples.

First you say the guy is condescending... BIG EF'ING DEAL.
Now you make it sound like if the guy is abusing you psychologically, ravaging you emotionally.

What is it?

Condescension is a big deal. There's no need for it no matter what reason. People like that are called d bags and deserve a punch in the throat. Why should anyone have to put up with that in the work place? This isn't high school

You need to somehow earn this guy's respect. Maybe challenge him to a game of Super Mario Kart?

I try to use humour to break the ice and/or find something the other person is interested in and talk about that.

Tetris is a sure friend maker :lmao:

^ Don't agree. Maybe the guy is just a bitter a'hole that resents the new kid for up and coming.

That's common enough no?

At the end of the day you don't have to take him home with you. You don't have to anything really. Do your job and eventually you will pass this guy, if you learn how to play the game. Or, you will become him and then history repeats.

Seems like he's a passover and hates the fact that his peers will/have become his boss before moving up and on.

That's the only reason to be a dick to someone that he knows is new and in the apprentice stage.

Bitter.

Is it really a big deal?
Aren't you the guy who posted just 10 mins ago "When they're condescending I just tell them :thefinger: and get out of my area"?
Someone is condescending to me... big efing deal.

Now, if there is something else... like some kind of insult or abuse... the OP would do himself a favour by posting...

:p

You are there to learn. Do it! Do it! Doooo it!

One of my friends was like that. In fact he trained me in scobol.

Edit: Once I got over the hump and was contributing to the team, he changed.

Right now you're probably a big wrench in his schedule, throwing off his workload.

Keep in mind what you're feeling now, so that when you're training a new person for the 1000th time, for a short job that you'll make your own mistakes and not his.

Don't forget that Info Tech isn't well known for it's advances in social skills.
There's a reason that some people prefer to deal with computers.

My point was I do something about it. In an environment like where the op is that's not so much an option. So yes it really is a big deal. Why are you so offended? Are you one of those people I'd want to punch in the throat or are you just bored trolling the internets :dontknow:

You are the problem in the white-collar workforce if you condone that kind of crap. "Basic respect" means professionalism. Not courtesy, not kindness, not even "being nice" just basic professionalism. The guy that works for me in my office is an arrogant prick, not one person likes him and he knows it. He hates that I'm his boss mostly cause of our age difference, BUT he's always professional. Curt and a little short, maybe borderline sarcastic/rude sometimes but professional. It keeps morale up and keeps things running smoothly

Agreed. You wanna be a condescending prick you'd better do your job PERFECTLY 24/7/365

Who is condescending now?
The irony should be killing you right now!!!

LoL
That's funny!

That didn't come across as condescension, maybe you're just looking for a conflict with OP here? You have beef with him or something?

I'm not offended at all. It was an honest question. Is being condescending such a big deal in the first place? Of all things in life that could happen to the OP?

I didn't want to get into the details for that very specific reason. It is hard to explain the situation if you cannot understand the work lingo and I'm really bad at explaining.

....You didn't read the rest did you?

I see your point and while I'll say no it's not the end of the world it's still largely unprofessional and as adults completely unnecessary is what I'm getting at. In the office place like that it's also very hard to deal with as you don't have a lot of ways available to you.

Condescension is an impression ... the feeling that the other person is patronizing to me. It felt like condescension when he says "Lets see if you can understand this", like if I was in 2nd grade, or like if he is going to talk quantum theory.

:p

Does it look like I have a beef with the OP? Am I leaning too hard on him??
Believe me, it was not my intention to make anyone feel bad.

You picked your raid party members? I always had half randoms and at least one Leeroy Jenkins.

I'm just surprised because I have been in this field for a while and never expected this; hell this hasn't happened since high school!

I was thinking I should compare penis sizes with him by seeing if his car is faster than my bike.

I don't know if I want to trouble myself with earning the respect of a jackass though but it would be good for humility training.
