HD helmet cams

I'm thinking of picking one of these up to integrate into my bike:

http://www.chinadone.com/hd-portabl...on-race-car-action-camera-recorder_p1450.html

60 fps @ 640x480 seems interesting, or 30 fps at larger resolutions (I'd be happier with 60 fps, personally)

I would wait and see example videos. Cheap 720p is not the same as good 720p.

Not waterproof or weatherproof.

Needs to be plugged in all the time. no battery

Edit: Found some video examples. Definitely not HD.

I don't mind that it has to be plugged in all the time, I'm just looking for good video quality and sound. Option #2 is this guy here: http://www.chinadone.com/Mobile-Per...icro-Video-Recorder--Sony-HAD-CCD-_p1451.html

Only 30 FPS, though, and twice the price. I don't mind 640x480, but that 60 FPS is certainly appealing. I hope it's not like some crappy double-frame insertion dealy and instead is true 60 FPS. Thing with Chinese products like this is that you can never tell until you shell out for it.

Thats a good deal, but let us know how the camera works with that card on the bike if you have a chance to ride. Does Drift provide a list of recommended cards? I know that for my cam (go pro hd), users have consistently had issues with Transcend, Adata and Centon.

Got the cards yesterday and they work 100% fine. I strapped it in my truck and drove around with it.

Great thread!

Anyone know of a camera HD that has 60 frames per second and an external mic jack?

I, like others are looking to pick up a camera, and the GoPro and Contour have made the short list. Just checking Contours site, it states the GPS IS able to take still frame pics.
***********************************************
The Contour GPS captures beautiful 1080p video. It utilizes a 135° wide-angle rotating lens that delivers a true high quality image that captures all the action with minimal distortion and no fish-eye. It records Full HD in all its glory.
We provide several different camera settings so that you can get the shot that best fits your activity. Choose between 3 resolutions, 2 frame rates, or a still photo mode
  • Full HD 1080p (1920 x1080 @ 30 fps) to capture those awesome moments in the highest resolution available.
  • Tall HD 960p (1280 x 960 @ 30fps) for those sports like surfing that are better suited to a taller image.
  • Action HD 720p (1280 x 720 @ 60 fps) when frame rate is more important than resolution. The perfect setting to capture the fastest action. It reduces blur and rolling shutter effect.
  • Contour 720p (1280 x 720 @30 fps). When space on your card is at a premium and you need to record that last epic adventure. This setting takes it easy on your memory.
  • Still Photo. When you want to freeze frame the action, the photo mode is your perfect shot. You can pick from 5 rates (3, 5, 10, 30, or 60 sec) to best capture that moment.

Just one more thing to now consider.

Marcel Irnie doesn't seem to have any problems with his Helmet cam and he runs his up to 270km/h in Parts Canada Amateur Sportbike races.

Thanks for posting this camera. I think this is the one I will pick up. External audio is very important to me.

You'll need it, the built in microphone is horrible.
As appose to what? At least the Drift gives you an option of an external mic. All self contained waterproof cameras like this will sound like that. If you want clear, good sound then use an external audio recorder then edit it together.

VIO POV HD! Check it out.

For double the price.

As opposed to the Contour or GoPro. Yes, you have the option of an external mic, but only using a proprietary connector. Also, 0.5m is hardly waterproof.

I understand that you think the Drift HD is the best camera out there. However, like all the other camera's in the class is has it's own downfalls.

Where did I say the Drift is "the best camera out there"? I've never said that. They all have their pros and cons.

The GoPro and Contour mic ALSO suck, don't kid yourself. I even showed you an example that the Drift sounds better then the GoPro.

Also, .5m (1.6 feet) is waterproof. Try putting the GoPro in 1.6 feet of water without it's case and see what's happens.

Between the GoPro and Contour, I definitely prefer the GoPro's mic; at least with its skeleton case on you can actually make out the sound of the bike, people/yourself talking, etc -- with the waterproof case it's muted, but still fairly clear if you bump up the volume. With the Contour it's pure wind noise, unless at nearly a standstill, and I find my Contour's mic has gone rather fuzzy for some reason. (Probably from riding with it in the rain a few too many times -- that camera is supposed to be water-resistant without the case, but it still leaks in quite easily. My particular unit seems to have an undersized lens protector, so water/dust/everything gets right into it...)

Would be curious to try the Drift sometime, but all these gadgets are adding up... lol.

No you never said it was the best. However, any time someone criticizes it you seem to make a point of proving that it is better than the rest. i.e. the crappy microphone.

The GoPro has a better mic, period. You showed one example of the drift where the mic didn't sound too bad, the vast majority of drift videos have the camera picking up all kinds of vibration noises and generally sounding extremely tinny.

Also, I wouldn't put the GoPro in 1.6 feet of water without it's waterproof case. That would be stupid. That's why it comes with a waterproof case that allows you to put it 100 feet underwater. The drift was in no way meant to be used underwater. It was designed not to die in a rain storm.

I'm not trying to say that it is a bad camera, just stop trying to convince everyone else that everything about it is awesome and without flaws.
