HD helmet cams

-No external mic support
-No Built in Screen
-Add-ons cost extra

I'm sure you most likely know already, but for anyone that doesn't, there are such add-ons out/supposed to be coming out for the above two. The BacPac LCD screen is $90 at RadioWorld, comes with replacement hatch doors to fit it into the case; of course this makes the camera a little bulkier than it already is, but I'd gladly sacrifice that for the ability to quickly line up my shots, or to review video while away from the computer. There's supposed to be an external wireless mic coming at some point(???) but haven't seen much about that.

That said... yeah, I'm really not happy at all with how the GoPro is handling night-time video. My ContourHD is definitely better for that, and I really don't want to be switching between them, since the GoPro is clearly superior in decent lighting. Hrmph.

That's why I put "Add-ons cost extra". Now it's a $300 camera + $90 to get functionality the drift already has. Although it is a bigger screen and it is on the back and not the side.

Also, they have been talking about the wireless mic upgrade for 2 years and still nothing.

Yeah, I thought it'd been quite a while since that was originally announced... That's frustrating. If I'm vlogging or something, I really don't want to be syncing a voice recorder or something up with video every time. Oh well. Probably a $200 add-on when it comes out anyway. :p

Search KeyCain camera on YouTube and you'll see a lot of videos. I have 2 of these cameras and love them. $13 off ebay. About 2hour on one charge

I agree, why not put a digital camera duct taped to the helmet? At least the Contour looks good with the same video quality and with the contour you can aim the camera. You can't do that with the GoPro.

thank you for this. i got mine. tested around the house and in the car. its pretty good for a $10 camera. its not a quality camera but it does the job its intended to do just fine for me.

ill c how it does on the bike. im thinking it wont be so good with all the vibrations. but we'll see.

If you're gonna get these ****** Chinese cameras, be sure to get only the #3 variant. The rest of them suck balls.

Does anyone know where I can buy the Drift Innovation HD170 Stealth for a good price?
Does PointofViewCamera.ca have good prices?

I picked up the HD170 Stealth. Audio quality is great with the external mic. Picture quality is on par for a $300 pov camera. Night mode seems to work very well in low light conditions.
I will be doing more testing as the weather warms up.

very cool.. I like the all black look. Also like the RF remote, very convenient option.

First demo is on the front page of my site: http://motorvate.ca I have re-rendered the video down to 640x360 from 1280x720 so it can stream from my site, but after some quick testing it may not play without stopping.

I am still working on the site and trying to optimize streaming video. I had no idea how hard it is to get video to stream well with iOS, IE, FireFox and Safari. What a mess!

question, why not just upload it to youtube and then embed it on you site?

Simple answer: I want my content on my site and I don't want ANY advertising. Also, I want to learn more about how to stream video for an up comming project.

fair enough!

You are right about the remote... I did a driving school at Mosport on Sunday and it was nice to simply hit the button on my wrist to start/stop recording.

Interested to know why you picked the Drift over the other cameras. Looking to pick one up and I'm liking the external mic, remote and look of the Drift, but some people say the IQ is so-so.

Also, best website to grab a camera?

In my opinion the image quality is about the same on all the $300ish cameras, which is not very good. I don't care about how the colours look, as I colour correct my videos to make them look as they should.
Good audio is more important than good video.

I don't like the large frontal area of the GoPro, lack of built in display for setting up the shot, and I don't need water proof to 300.

BTW, my background is corporate training & communication videos, including green screen for the last 10 years.

I picked the Drift over the other for some of the same reason as Franko!.

It's waterproof (I'm not going scuba diving with it)
The rotating lens, so you can mount it at almost any angle
Standard camera mount hole
Doesn't look like a digital camera
The image quality is great for a $300 camera. Not over saturated.
RF remote
LCD screen to aim the camera
1080p and 720p recording on SDHC cards

Audio for me wasn't a concern. If I want good audio I would record the audio separately and combine it later in post.

My background? 12 years at one of the major TV stations in Canada.

I bought mine on Ebay
