HD helmet cams

I have the Drift HD170 Stealth. I bought it from Point of View Cameras, they are one of the recognized suppliers in Canada. Shipping was quick, 5 days. The camera takes some awesome video. I have mine mounted to the side of my helmets with the velcro that is supplied and the mounts. I just have to angle the camera so that when I am riding the camera is pointed horizontal.

I looked at all the cameras available and decided on the Stealth only for the fact it looked a little more aero dynamic and for the rotating lens. The audio is not great but I did not think it would be.

One short trip (approx 40 mins)recording in 1080P yielded a video that was 3.9G. One thing I would like to know is what software people are using to edit their videos.

I edited a ski/snowboard video with Adobe Premiere Elements and the end product turned out GREAT but it was a PITA to work with. Kept on crashing and there was stuff that it just couldn't do. I installed Sony Vegas 10 and started playing with it and it's 100x better in my opinion. From now on I'll be using Sony Vegas.

I use Adobe Premiere CS5 running Win7 x64, 12 gig Ram, on a nice Aurora Alienware pc or my Mac Book Pro when on location.

What's the average battery life you get out of the stock battery the Drift comes with?

I took two videos consisting of an approximately an hour and used about 60% of the battery. There is an extended battery that you can buy for the drift and I might look into that if and when I really need it.

Mine was also about the same... The battery that comes with the camera is 1110ma/hr. The hi cap is 1750 ma/hr and is the same as some older kodak cameras. (so I now have 5 spare batteries!)

The drift can also be powered from the usb port and switch to battery when usb power is interrupted.

What are the model numbers of the cameras.

Drift has me really interested especially because of the external mic. Seems like a lot of options for the money. Anyone know if it's cheaper in US?

I run a Contour 720P. It runs awesome, I mount it on my paintball mask and my helmet, and for you computer N00BS, you can easily take a freakin picture in VLC media player with VLC media snapshot. But of course, moving shots with an HD camera, GoPro or Contour you get weird shots most of the time. The mounts are very competitive and this is very important. There are chest mounts and handlebar mounts etc. etc. But my favourite is the headband mount for the Contour. Just video yourself doing crazy stuff! Both are awesome, but I would take the aerodynamic camera personally. :)

There's a new Drift HD out there.

I got the Contour HD, after some posted about a sale here. My experience pretty much mirrors that of others; good video, bad sound (wind noise). Fortunately the sound isn't an issue for me. Rather than mounting it on my helmet, I attached it to the mounting bracket for my windscreen. This has both pluses and minuses. Take a look at my throttle-side grip.

I agree with most of what is said. Pro's and cons etc..
I use the contour HD. I really like the small size on my helmet. Ye, there's wind noise but I usually put some music over my video. I can record voice later.
One interesting thing: If you spend a bit more and get the contour HD GPS, there is an app which allows you to use your iphone as a viewfinder. Really helpful for mounting etc..

If you're interested here's some stuff I recorded on a recent california run: 1200 RT. Notice it looks like a batmobile in some segments :)

Ya it's been mentioned

I see a few problem, the biggest is the 1.5 hours of batteries and it uses MicroSD cards.

I tried this, bought it from Costco and returned it the next day. It takes good video and the mini lcd screen is a plus. Buttons are not too user friendly(or I did not really read the instruction). Its 200 bucks but it had a quick life mounted on my handlebar ram mount. The vibration cracked the glass( or a stone did, but it was behind a windshield) and it stopped working.

For now I still use my SC-X300L it has a wired bullet cam that i mount anywhere on my bike using a suction cup mount, wired to charger on my bike , so no problem with battery life. But its not HD but i can have hours of video on a 4 G card
also it does not take me a whole day to edit and upload to web.. Sample video http://youtu.be/oLK5Z2GQG68 The cam was mounted by suction cup on the side of the side case.

I'm leaning more to the contour- the App for the Iphone for checking the view and adjusting quality is a big plus for me .Except that you cant use it in rain since the front will just pool with water. and a single stone will crack the lens. I do like the idea of replaceable armor of Tachyon XC HD if they have it on the contour.
