For real-world comparison sakes, Bit has the Contour 720p camera, and I have the GoPro 1080p. Here is a comparison of the 720p mode of GoPro vs the Contour VHolder 720p model (same day, same lighting conditions, etc):

[be sure to watch in 720p mode]

JoeBoo has the 1080p Vholder so next time we're out together at the Ganny I'll do the same comparison of Thorpe and Neils Hills with his footage vs mine...

It's a Creative Vado HD inside a shoei rf-1000. It slightly presses up against my nose, but it's not uncomfortable. If my nose was a little bit bigger, I'd be screwed. Also, there are better helmets to put a camera inside. Some people also shave a bit of the helmet (nothing to really shave on the shoei...but I wouldn't do it even if I could). It's really not as bad as it looks.

I can't get a sample video any time soon - but there are a couple of people on youtube who have the same setup.

When I was looking into it, this was better than all its competitors (the kodak equivalent, flip cams, etc.) in every sense.

I had one of these for my trackdays last year, had it mounted the same way. The problem with mounting it like this is that there is a lot of head movement when you're riding. For street riding, it might be okay especially if you sit in an upright position most of the time.

I lost it earlier this summer. Its great general purpose video camera especially if you can get it on discount, but it lacks the benefits of a true motorsports vid-cam.

In hindsight, mounting it the way you and I did is a good way to lose all your teeth in a crash.

Good price on a Tachyon XC HD here:

http://www.tachyoninc.com/

$179 US ($20.00 off)

No deals for Canadians tho:

http://www.tachyonxc.ca/

$219.99 CA

It's only 720 tho. Seems like a pretty basic camera.

That's what I'm scared of the most...but i figure it's better than a full-sized camera that I can barely just see over. I'm not a fan of the go-pro or contour 'cause it doesn't give the exact same view of the rider. I do remember seeing a vid where this guy zip-tied a vado to the front of his helmet (same setup that we had, except it was in front of the outer mouth plastic). Surprisingly, the sound turned out better than I'd expect it to.

Have you found any other better in-helmet mount cams?

Drift HD170 vs Contour HD vs GoPro HD

Looking at this video, looks like the Drift has the best clarity (sharpest) and the best colour, not over saturated like the gopro or muted like the contour.

Thanks for this, good find. The promotion expired at midnight. The more you read, the less appealing the promotion is:

$200 US
$14.95 Shipping
$7.00 Fedex Charge
Tariff Tax (China ?) 8%
US Tax (?)
Duty (?)
Canadian Tax (?)
Bend over Tax (?)

One guy states "he got a bill from Fed-ex way after the purchase."

Who knows what your final bill will actually be?

Ordering online is like entering the abyss.

Even with most maximum charges applied though it still comes out cheaper than a CDN sourced product I think. Chances of getting those extra charges are a lottery too. You should still come out on top.

There's a product: it's a set of sunglasses with a vid camera mounted to it, i think the $10 keychain cam would work okay too since it's so small...i've never tried it, but i would think that would be the safest bet....another issue i had with the vado in my helmet was that it had the tendency to shoot footage downwards, so most of the footage would just be concrete that was moving really fast...

In any case, the vado is a great camera regardless of whether you can mount it somewhere or not...I bought mine for $70, 8gigs of internal storage included (most cameras need you to buy additional flash mem). It was a sad day when I lost it :/

The biggest problem I had with the original SD camera linked above, was the battery life - not the video quality. I bought the best rechargeable batteries I could find, and used my expensive R/C charging system to deliver the correct amperage during charging to provide the most "punch" (needed for high-drain devices) and I still couldn't get much more than 30 mins average out of a charge.

Using Energizer or Duracell lithium (non-rechargeable) provided the best life, but using those would drain the pocket book real fast!

That's one of the best features of the HD version of the GoPro... the 2.5 hour battery packs. You can buy them new from eBay (including shipping to Canada) for $20 all in.
