H-D kills off more models ?

To be fair tho, the ADVs are stealing market share away from just about every other market segment, except maybe smaller displacement commuters and dirt bikes.

... and having put 2000 km on an ADV bike in Australia, I don't understand this any more than I understand why someone would want to daily-drive a 4x4 on pavement. I thought it was rubbish for the way I was riding it (pavement). And a Jeep Wrangler is rubbish on pavement, too. But people still buy them.

I feel like the ADV market has kind of blurred the lines, you can get offroad oriented ones, or more sport oriented ones (s1000XR comes to mind)

You cant take the xr offroad, but carve corners with it all day, and realistically, how many ADV riders are taking their bikes offroad anyway?

I think you need to bite the bullet and understand that change is never a bad thing. You need to catch the eye of the next gen or be prepared to close shop in 15 years anyways.
Hmm tell that to accident victums, and how mobile phones have impacted driving habits with distracted driving..

Most tech is a distraction. People cling onto parts of it like it is a necessity, it's mostly not. Those zombies should not be riders or drivers. The tech industry knows this, and they focus on new features etc to keep people fixated, and keep buying the same crap over and over. Once the next gen grows up from tech, means sheds off this hold, they maybe can appreciate the simplicity of detatchment.

Anyway you don't buy an HD for wizbang eye candy tech. But I think they have just enough which I believe is a decent approach.
FFS I don't even have a radio in mine... :(

I like performance tbh, and the weird boat like feeling I get riding cruisers in general is a no bueno for me

but to each their own I suppose

Generally agree with this. But that XR gave up any ADV pretense when it stuck a 17" wheel up front.

I think the Multistrada is the biggest pretender out there right now. 170 hp? On a dirt road? Rly?

RLY?!?!

its not really adv, you won't off road this thing, to my knowledge they don't even offer proper bash plates and crash cages.

not a damn clue whey they call it 'adventure sports', but hey insurance company doesn't consider it a sport bike, I'm not going to complain.

hence want vs need

my BMW has arguably the best TFT on the market currently (i think KTM is pretty much there as well). how often do you think i look down to appreciate it?

You're obviously not doing it right:

Certainly the lines have been blurred - just as it has in the SUV market. Jeep? The Wrangler is the serious off-roader, and they're terrible on-road. A Cherokee is fine on-road ... but it's basically a tall wagon (i.e. car) with all-wheel-drive. Unibody, transverse engine, 4 wheel independent suspension (that is quite resistant to being lifted and having big tires put on it), pretty paint that you don't want to scratch against a rock or tree, pretty interior that you don't want to drag muddy boots into.

The rental that I had (BMW F800GS Trophy, whatever that means) was awful on pavement. When I got back from holidays, I looked for what journalists said about it, and everything I could find had glowing reviews of how good it was off road, and were written as if pavement hadn't been invented yet. My impressions - Too tall. Too soft/squishy. Not enough cornering clearance despite being so tall (because the suspension was such rubbish). Steering felt wierd. Brakes meh. Tires meh.

Lots of those ADV bikes are dressed-up naked bikes. They'll work better on pavement, and perhaps not as well off-road. And for most people who buy them - that's better for how they use the bike anyhow.

But for that matter ... my cbr125 is a dressed-up naked bike, and my r3 is a dressed-up naked bike. Handlebars above the top triple, relatively upright stock riding position, user-friendly engine characteristics, rear shock acts directly on the swingarm without a linkage, right-side-up forks, built-to-a-price suspension parts.

The Germans and the Austrians are having a little competition to see how many special edition monikers they can pile onto their existing models:

KTM: "890 Adventure R Rally Pro."
BMW: "R1250GS Adventure Rallye Limited Edition."
KTM: "1290 Super Adventure R Super-Duper F U BMW And Take Ewan McGregor With You When You Leave The Building. Pro."

Back to HD...

They have a ton of money and are not seriously bleeding off cash.

Part of their heritage is surviving, they are good at that.

They have an aging, but loyal customer base.

The still have 40% of the large MC North American market. The also have high margins, so right sizing is a viable option too.

It’s gonna get worse for them as the straighten out their market strategy. But don’t count them out.
