GTAM at TMP Weekend! July 20/21 2013

Unless I am mistaken, they did not send the wagon out for a single broken bike all day Saturday. EMS never moved either. That right there is a great track day!

Damn seen at least 3 down bikes on Sunday. All in the yellow(beginner) group. None looked serious as everyone was standing up after. Even in the first session on the first lap on the first turn there was I think a Gsxr on the grass.

Awesome day! Was told I should move to intermediate after about 6 sessions I think. Everyone seemed friendly wish I could have met a few of you but I was having too much fun

hello I'm just wondering if you got a picture of myself. I was riding a 2013 Kawasaki zx6r in novice group with a white suite and flash red signet q arai. well thanks. It was my first real trackday. Next time I will be running in intermediate as advised by the flag guys haha. I just purchased a zx7r, so hopefully I'll be running that instead next time. Nice to see everyone out there.

Yammy R6 I enjoyed sharing the track with you man, at the end of the day, I think you were the only one who passed me in novice in the last session. look forward to riding with you in intermediate next time out. your bike is really nice buddy. cheers. From the guy on the 636.

I was almost never passed and was dragging knee at every turn but no one asked me to switch to intermediate. I feel left out.

Intermediate was really full. We could only move a couple people up, and even then, it was once some others started taking breaks from sessions or moved up to hot shoe.

Turn 2 for sure. I don't really remember what turn 10 was but yes by then end of the day I was knees down at every turn. Obviously not at the chicane.

*Ignore the "passing zone" indications, you can pass everywhere.

Thanks for the pic. In beginners we were only allowed to pass in the front and back straight. Not everyone followed the rules but I only encountered safe passes by everyone.

Yes I went knee down at both turns. Turn 10 not every lap. Turn 2/3 was I double apex correct?

Intermediate was wayyyyy overbooked and that was the only reason I didn't move up.

Assuming your body position is good and since you carry enough speed to have to drag knee even in 10, to me it sounds like you might have been running a pretty decent pace. Any chance you can find approximate lap times from a video or something? I'm just curious, because lately I've been running in intermediate and so I happen to be one of the faster ones in the group, but I still rarely actually need to touch ground on 2 and 10. The 2->3 sequence I suck at, so I can't comment on that. But I started WOT after 9 and carry a lot of speed in 10 before I brake for 11, but still don't usually drag knee in 10. It's just strange.

Yeah 10 I don't always drag knee but the more laps I did the later I'd brake and the more I'd have to lean over. I don't have a lap timer or go pro but I don't recall anyone passing me. 2/3 I can do in one motion as the intro to track school showed me those lines.

I was warming my tires for the first two laps so I took it easy but I found I was still being kept behind by other riders. It was only my first track day so ill stay in beginners for the rest of the season and move up next year.

I know it feel nice when you get upgraded from newbie to mid-class… but it was actually less crowded in the beginner class, people are a bit more conservative, and its a bit safer in general because of the passing rule. I usually just get out of the track if I hit the traffic jam, and get back right in when there is a gap. Sometimes I slow down on the straight to create some space to properly ride the turns at the end.

Dragging knee is not an indication of good or fast riding, it is just an indication that your lean angle is low which can mean you are not getting off the bike enough. Good riders try in most cases not to drag knee.

Just FYI

thanks for that. I didn't drag my knee once and I know for sure I was faster then most that were in hegginers group. it seamed like it slowed them down actually. def held me up. then on the straights bigger capacity bikes were a ***** till exiting turn one then I would just brake a touch later or sometimes sooner and get better drive on the exit.

No, don't stay in beginners if you're running a good pace, you'll go crazy being constantly stuck and unable to pass! I only started going to the track late last season, and for the 8 or 9 trackdays I've done, I was probably passed 4-5 times total. IMO, if you read a lot, educate yourself and make progress every time you're out, you'll only get to practice being passed after you get to the expert group eventually. Usually there are so many very slow slow slow people in both beginners and intermediate, that unless you get a lap-timer and manage to find a gap to squeeze laps at your 100% without being slowed down, you'll never know how you're actually doing.

I've only put my knee down on a few corners and I'm doing 1:25s.
