Flip plate

You guys do understand that you have to break the law before receiving a ticket right?

My car license plate is attached to my trunk, like most plates on passenger cars are. Yet as im driving i can press a button, release the trunk and like magic it pops up and you can no longer see the plate. You see it too is attached to something that has the ability to flip up. Yet no one here got a ticket for that unless you're drinving around with the trunk up and plate not visible.

Just because you have the ability to do something doesn't make it illegal. Unless its possession is prohibited, in this case it is not.

Logical zinger! Paul convinced me. Trunk is one massive hinge plate with electric activator!

I'm surprised at the number of self admitted thieves there are stealing from the 407. There are plenty of free roads in the province that you can use without having to steal. As a toll paying 407 user, I'm subsidizing your use.

There are no free roads, just taxed and taxed + stealth taxed.

Isn't it illegal?

Yes it is. 100% illegal.... You need a white light, not a blue light on your plate.

As for the hinge part... 100% legal until you are on the road and flip it up making you plate not visible. Just because you CAN do something doesn't mean you are breaking the law. Use common sense.

Does anyone know the law behind plate visibility?

Lets say you park somewhere, and take your license plate away incase someone steals it, is this illegal and is it grounds for impoundment (since your vehicle has no plate now).

They will see it as an abandoned vehicle. They'll tow it.

Depends where it's parked, ie on a road or on private property.
...it may even be more appealing to an opportunistic thief who thinks it's already been stolen!

because of all the amazing back and forth in this thread, someone is going to coincidentally get pulled over, plate hinge will be seen, cop will verify that it's ok cuz you have no intent to use it, and will get off.
lmao that is all I read from that post.

riding the shoulder as close to the concrete barrier as possible works, or just blasting through at 200+ seems to do the trick

or at least that what I overheard someone say at a meet once

yeah blasting through at 200+ works lmao my bro does it on his car when he forgets his transponder

I'm suprised at the number of people willing to let the 407 corp steal from them.
That bloody thing was build with tax dollars then sold off (foreign owned - Spanish if I remember correcly) for pennies on the dollar.
It was bad enough when the tolls were going to our gov't - at least, in theory, the proceeds would come back to citizens - now forget it, I won't go anywhere near the 407.
Everyone who steals back from those crooks is a Robin Hood in my mind.

It's not stealing unless I'm removing a camera;). Theft/thieving is too strong a word.

Spanish income Tax evasion, trespassing...beating the system. No different in my books than the single occupant cars that drive and get away with using the Hov lanes, yeah the same lanes i subsidize with my taxes ;) .

Stop gouging two wheelers, bike cause no damage to that highway, are never on it when the snow plough needs to be used, so why do we pay the same rate as a ford excursion?

Thieves?

women are equipped to be prostitutes,, but most women I know aren't told to remove it so they can't do something illegal

well,, if you send kids to military school,, they will learn to use a gun... so that is teaching them to be killers right...? same as having a flip plate holder ,,, you have the ability to use it....

these comparisons are ridiculous.

there is one intended purpose for a flip plate. the police and the courts are not as moronic as you seem to think.

a better comparison would be this - having a hooked up nitrous system in your vehicle. It is there for one purpose, and it is illegal. You don't need to be caught burying the needle to get a ticket for it.

You can argue with a bunch of people on the internet until your fingers are arthritic, but it won't change the fact that most informed police WILL ticket/hassle you about having a hinged plate. Whether that will stand up in court.... well, even drunk drivers who are caught dead to rights can weasel their way out of convictions.

The question is, are you willing to take the risk? Is it worth it to you to give cops another reason to hassle you? For a lot of us, yes, since half the crap we do to our bikes is deemed illegal anyway. Hell, the amount of guys I see with plates mounted so far under the tail that its all but invisible unless you're directly behind them has me scratching my head...HOW aren't these guys getting tickets left right and center?

I had a flip plate on my bike for the longest time, and it paid itself off times a million... then one day it got physically ripped off my bike (by a cop)

did you file a complaint for the damaged property?
:D

Pointless to have a flip plate here anyway... OPP has planes and helicopters if you try to run, and there are not really any tunnels you can disappear in.

If you want to run red light cameras :)confused: no idea why you'd want to) and get on the 407 for free, then mount your plate angled more to the ground or reach back and cover it with your hand as you ride through...
A plane (1). And YRP has a helicopter (1). Both are rarely in the air. Besides, 9.5/10 times someone runs they're too far gone for the cops to catch up or radio ahead in time. They get you by being sneaky, i.e. following you in an unmarked car and setting up a roadblock ahead for you.

Obstruction prohibited

(3) The number plates shall not be obstructed by any device that prevents the entire number plates including the numbers from being accurately photographed using a photo-radar system. 1993, c. 31, s. 2 (5).
Same

(3.0.1) The number plates shall not be obstructed by any device that prevents the entire number plates including the numbers from being accurately photographed using a red light camera system. 1998, c. 38, s. 2 (1).
Same
(3.1) The number plates shall not be obstructed by any device or material that prevents the entire number plates including the numbers from being identified by an electronic toll system. 1996, c. 1, Sched. E, s. 2 (1).
Offence
(4) Every person who contravenes subsection (2), (3), (3.0.1) or (3.1) is guilty of an offence. 1993, c. 31, s. 2 (5); 1996, c. 1, Sched. E, s. 2 (2); 1998, c. 38, s. 2 (2).

That is the section which you will get a ticket guarenteed.

A better comparison? No since what you described IS in the HTA as being illegal. No where in the HTA does it mention "The possibility of hiding your license plate"

Using your argument, I guess this is also illegal...

Where do you get your information from ? lalls.

Both plane and copter are up regularly on a daily basis. And as for running and not being able to radio ahead of time, the cops arms would have to be chopped off.
Once they broadcast they are in a bike chase, and the direction they are headed. Cops further up that way get closer to the action and await your arrival.

I got that straight from the mouth of a YRP Sgt.

If I blow by a cop on the DVP doing 200+ I'd put money on me getting off at the next exit before anyone is there to greet me. And then I'm just traffic.
