F1 Thread!!!

Far too early to draw conclusions.
You really need to wait until the european leg before you can reasonably predict how the year will develop. Years are composed of the first 1/3 of the races when people are only able to overnight "some" parts from their factories, and then the mid-season break + european legs when all prototype parts are able to be utilized + the last leg when teams either give up on the current year to begin work on next year's car, or grind it out for a few more manufacture points.

All in, looking forward to see the battles if the mid-pack teams are able to keep up. I hate the artificial passing from the DRS's, but passing is passing I suppose.

Wasn't a 2012 Moto2 race won by 17 seconds.

I wouldn't know that as obviously as I've only watched one race. :)

First F1 race I watched live Niki Lauda won it, also old enough to have watched Mansell race a F3 car at Thruxton.

The way you phrased it the first time sounded like you were a first time watcher

Not to keep beating the dead horse, but read the gpweek.com mag from Mar 17.

This is not just ordinary fans like me or some of you who dislike like the new exhaust sound of the cars, it's the people who pay to organize/make money of the events. It's a very real financial problem .... Unless you are in some cushy VIP booth with good food and pretty girls and no time to watch the race ... LOL, the major incentive to go for ordinary people has been removed in exchange to extract every bit of energy from the exhaust sound/velocity of the fumes which they can theoretically turn into HP at some point .... what is left is a quiet car .... probably quieter than most street bikes with aftermarket slip on .... and that's strange ... LOL

Next? The will make the sound better/noisier via MP3 .... :-( great!

I dunno... I liked the removal of traction and launch control, and other electronic aids. I was dreading this engine change since they announced it.

I like the sound of the cars. I like the new technology and the direction it is headed.

F1 is about progression and that is what is happening.

No matter what they do someone will find something to ***** about.

If you want to see an electric silent F1 racing your day will come soon as a result of the so-called progression .... LOL

People for years have been complaining about the same thing, not enough passing/racing and too many aides/gadgets in place .... so they introduced smaller engines with additional energy converting power modules, DRS and crappy tires to instill a change.

Also I fail to understand how this is becoming more affordable overall, as surely costs will be spiraling with the power units being as complicated as they are. Or is cost control not an issue now since we are out of worldwide recession?

I am trying to be positive about it, let's see what happens when they get further down into the season.

I agree 110%.
"let's save money"
okay
"let's spend 2 years on developing a completely different powertrain, new gear box, massive aero-restrictions, all of which are replacing reliable, tested, and well developed v8's so we can limit them to 100kgs of fuel... FUEL SAVINGS, that'll save us some money!!"
>>wait, not done yet, let us baffoons make these new untested, brand spanking new powertrains, and FORCE them to last 8 races instead of 4. Hah, that'll show em.

"Get rid of the tire warmers, its not like we haven't used them for x-number of years already and already have them loaded in the truck"
>enter new ingenious and expensive ways of getting tires up to pressure/temps

Save money... in the sport where it takes yacht-loads of $100's to first put a car onto the grid, nevermind be competitive and fight for the podium.

It's all great PR and all, but so misguided. They would have made a bigger impact by allocating all the development costs to building villages in _______ with houses/buildings and tiles hand-laid by Vettle and his magical pointy-finger.
Think about it, some african village would then have 100 tiles hand laid by Vettle, and fetch at LEEEEAST $20 on ebay. Good enough to feed the village for a month per-tile.

/rant

Saving money and going green do not belong in F1. Grassroots autox, sure. F1---naaaah.

Who cares if the cars are silent. F1 is about going fast, not about making noise.

The electric package allows the teams the ability to put power wherever they want. You don't have to rev the engine out to make power anymore. You could dial in all the torque at 2k RMP if you wanted. I find this pretty damn interesting.

I dont think cost savings will be big, but limiting the amount of engines will reduce the cost over a season imo. Fuel costs savings aren't going to be huge.

I strongly disagree. F1 and moto gp are great because of the sounds thy make, if they were racing around the track at 500 km/hr (overkill I know) silently, I wouldn't even watch. Hey, next race u watch mute the tv..... That electric car racing for ya. :)

Reducing the number of engines will (maybe) cost less on a per-unit basis, but the development and R&D involved in making each component, every seal, every sensor last twice as long will quickly nullify 'savings'. Hey, I'm no expert though, and I did not stay at a Holiday Inn last night.

Tron races amigo, tron races.

Can someone send a memo to dear Lewis and tell him to lose that goofy flat brimmed hat in the funny looking colour?

You are too emotionally invested in F1.

I agree they are great because of the sound they make, but the sound bears zero importance in the design process of the car. It is merely a bi-product of using a high performance engine with no muffler.

You realize that they re-engineer everything from scratch every year anyways? And throughout the year for most parts as well. The new regs just mean the re-engineer to the new regs. Cost control (though I'm not convinced it's effective) centers around limits on exotic materials, short lifespan parts, and non-stop testing.

Not true, the engines had been more or less stable since 2009

The engine regs were stable, that doesn't mean they weren't redesigning a new engine every year, or during the year.
