F1 Thread!!!

If they didn't have to worry about "only 5 engines per year", the 30 seconds gap to the field would have easily been much more.
MSRP is correct: Mercedes is looking after the engines, they can easily pull ahead but if that results in failed engines; they'll have deadly grid penalties down the road, which will lose them the championship

http://www.formula1.com/inside_f1/rules_and_regulations/sporting_regulations/8689/fia.html

c) Should a driver use more than five of any one of the elements a grid place penalty will be imposed upon him at the first Event during which each additional element is used. Penalties will be applied according to the following table and will be cumulative :
Replacement of a complete power unit = The driver concerned must start the race from the pit lane.
The first time a 6th of any of the elements is used = Ten grid place penalty.
The first time a 6th of any of the remaining elements is used = Five grid place penalty.
The first time a 7th of any of the elements is used = Ten grid place penalty.
The first time a 7th of any of the remaining elements is used, and so on = Five grid place penalty.

Whattarace!

Another Senna/Prost battle in the making.

Good job Force India spanking the Red Bulls, Ferrari, and McLarens.

Bring on the next one!

+2 to that. Say what you will about the new regulations, good ole' rain and safety cars always make for an interesting finish. Crash-termaldo strikes again, it's great news to see a driver walk away from an barrel-row! Maldernado's a pay-to-drive-er right?... can't see him landing another seat next year if he hasn't improved from last year...

The Mercedes duo gapping the rest of the field at 2+ seconds a lap at the closing laps--man the rest of the field hasn't even got a chance in hell at competing for the top two spots. Crazy efficiency!

Loved seeing Force India in the mix with the big boys--shame DiResta's no longer there. Shame to see the Ferrari duo's talents just being wasted at the POS's that Ferrari's putting out there.

Vettle vs Riccardo!--I hope that Riccardo can keep up the momentum and that Vettle's powertrain-woes are over-exaggerated and that the Aussie fights Vettle for the remainder of the season **fingers crossed**

So many team-deathmatches, twas pretty fun to watch on a track that doesn't seem to forecast interesting battles!!

Good race, very entertaining .... 3 and down had something throughout the whole race. I cannot believe the lenient penalty the Lotus got in the end.

Now, 1-2 .... it was great 10 lap or so battle but two things for me stood out ... a) I wish it was not induced by the safety car (did someone ask the driver to stop right there? ... LOL) ... b) Rosberg clearly failed miserably, he left points there .... He must be greatly disappointed although he was a good sport about it after all. He clearly could not hook the car, with better tire, up through the last corner to the main straight ... always 0.5-1.0s behind only good enough to get DRS activated but not close enough to get by.

It starts to look like a Benz cup ... I guess Horner was right that they are all 1s off Mercedes' pace .... clearly it is true. I hope the others will come back, but right now my bet would not be on any of them. The gap is just too much, we are not talking few tens a lap ....

Absolutely... Thank god for that safety car... I didn't fall asleep!!

After the safety car, both Mercedes were going wheel-to-wheel to get P1; when they were scrapping, they were +3s/lap ahead of the pack.

Mercedes is seriously sandbagging their potential, and keeping their cards really close. If a Red Bull or another Mercedes team were to give them pressure, they can clear them w/o issues.

It's Mercedes' Championship to lose

Is it just me, but I find the sound of the new turbo V6's somewhat unattractive......I miss that 19,000 rpm n/a V8 wail.

It isn't just you......

15k rpm limit and most are only running up to 12K rpms. NA road going Ferraris sound way better than F1 cars at the moment.....

You kidding, right?

The good news is that when there's good racing scraps all over the track, you kind of, and use the wording very loosely, stop paying attention to it, but the moment the action is gone there's not much more reason to watch.

True... but, using that same mentality, I would MUCH rather watch some kind of feature gokart race with all the top drivers racing each other... or hell, stick them all in KTM X-Bows or anything and let them race and it will be more entertaining than F1 races are :)

It should be noted that at least some of the excitement was the effect of the SC as that allowed the cars to run full out and not have to save fuel which spiced it up a lot.

Yes well noted. My estimate is that the two would lap everyone else if there was no SC ... LOL

D/Loaded the official android app after seeing it promoted during the Bahrain race.

Seriously impressive!

Hate to be the wheel guy back in the day.

1982 was the first real year that F1 cars were doing mid race pit stops. I remember seeing this pitstop in 1983 and was amazed at how fast it was, listen to the excitement in Murray's voice. Now when i watch it today it looks like it's filmed in slow motion, compared to the modern era.

Mechanics had zero incentive to go any faster as the pitstops were usually dictated by refueling because it took the longest. These sub-3 second pitstops are only possible because they banned in-race refueling.;)

True.. in a few seasons, refueling will be back. They can swap battery cells, as well as tires.

Heck those 1.5 BMW turbo cars sounded great unlike the current ones!

Must have been one of the last F1 races at Brands Hatch! One of my favorite tracks.
