F1 Thread!!!

I see some of you thought it was exciting race? What did you think was exciting in particular?
I've seen all the Jerez & Bahrain winter testing, and have followed the new regulations quite closely.

The whole race was exciting for me: At the beginning they had to do extra formation laps because the two Marussia's engines crapped out.

Hamilton who had pole position had to retire within the 3rd lap. Sebastian Vettel was passed by Marrussia & Caterham, and ended up retiring within lap 4. We're talking about a four time back2back world champion retiring so early; as well as the favourite (Hamilton) to win the race from Pole position.

The Red Bull barely had any mileage w.r.t. winter testing, and Ricciardo's P2 finish was unbelievable. Absolutely no bookie would've predicted a Rosberg, Ricciardo & Magnusson podium.

The Kobiashi Caterham crash on the first corner of the first lap, that took out Williams' Massa. If Bottas hadn't lost that wheel and had to force an early tire change/pit-stop. Bottas would've been fighting for a podium. Williams was very strong, but just ended up really unlucky.

Ferraris also had electrical problems, which meant they couldn't use full power. But they managed really really well.

Lets not forget Force India's "Hulkenburg", he was touted to get a Lotus drive this year. But due to money issues, had to decide between Sauber and Force India. And what a decision he made... the hulk was super competitive this weekend.

Huge round of support for the new kids entering F1: Magnusson & Kvyat.

Formula 1 is about being at the cutting edge. The V8 from last year was already in its fourth year of evolution and if you look at road going cars we're trying to build better hybrid cars. The #1 problem are the batteries and reliability, what better platform to research & develop them, than in Formula 1? Where millions if not billions of dollars are spent?

You really have to watch some of the development chatter to fully appreciate how these new "Power Units" work. I agree the sound isn't as meaty as a V12, V10 or V8, but it's not terrible sound either. Have you heard the sound of the new hybrid-hypercars: La Ferrari, McLare P1, Porsche 918 Spyder?

These new V6 cars maybe slower, but they're definitely not "easier" to drive. This is a new era of F1, it'll take them some time... but i expect some really good races ahead.

If they just continued with last year's V8, Red Bull would be serially winning every race. I personally don't want to see that again, last year was just terrible for F1. Every race, Vettel wins.

This type of exciting reliability issue racing will be short-lived, the teams especially the top tiers ones will sort it out with the next few races. Red Bull's Christian Horner went on the record saying they'll become competitive on the European leg of the F1 calendar.

If you find F1 boring this year, did you really like F1 in 2013?

Good mix on the podium (if it stands). But those new regulation engines sound like crap. Wonder if you still need to wear ear plugs in the grandstands.

V8's were apparently around 135 db and the turbo's are around 105 so they are much quieter and thus you won't need as much hearing protection.

Now that they are so quiet you can hear tires squealing on track if they lock up which wasn't the case before.

Aside from the turbo hiss which is cool, I think the new motors sound horrible. The raging adrenalin of a V8/10 at full song is lost.

These heavier cars with less downforce, running in fuel saving mode (which they didn't have to do in Melbourne due to restart and 4 laps SC) that sound crappy and have a 1/3 attrition rate really isn't the way I'd like F1 to be.

Hopefully the reliability improves a bit (although I'm not unhappy that lulu and Vet were out....) so we can see more cars actually finishing.

Good on Rosberg, hopefully he can keep it going.

You definitely sound like you know a lot about F1, based on this part of your post... but the first part, which I removed, I simply can't get onto the same page as.

Hamilton, and Vettel both having to retire is not exciting. Especially so early in the race. Especially because it was due to mechanical failures... That was the biggest bummer.

I also agree with other posters, the cars sound like crap. When they are decelerating, the sound of whatever that is, the turbos or the energy regeneration system, or the combination of the two... it is terrible for F1. I could see it getting gamer kids who are under 20 years old into F1, however. The sound of them accelerating, I don't even know what they sound like... A Can Am Spyder?? :) Something with travesty in its nature at least.

But yes... I agree, the cars need to be hybrids at this current point in the human race's development. It is just a bit of a disappointment at first sight.

I see some of you thought it was exciting race? What did you think was exciting in particular?

-McLaren got its groove back.
-new hybrid tech is fascinating, love to watch how reliability vs performance ratio will hold up.
-Williams scored more points in this race, then they did the entire last season. Williams might be back.
-Everybody was amazed that at least one RedBull made it to race finish as they never got more than 30 odd laps consistently before all their cars broke down in preseason testing.
-Main teams still have some catching up to do, Ferrari, Lotus, and to an extent, Red Bull.

-oh, and the best team (in my eyes) won! doesn't get more exciting than that!

Great season start so far....... can't wait for Malaysia!

Not sure why everybody is writing off F1 after just ONE RACE.

Love to see Williams doing well, a classic team in classic racing colours. But the race didn't live up to the promise from qualifying. No more 2AM races for me, I'll watch the highlights later, maybe.

The race was better than expected and I am OK with the mechanical breakdowns as it provides the wildcard. Racing was once being able to push a car without breaking it. This engine limit and the very. Structured formula takes away innovation - ground effect cars, V8 V1O H12 and V12s and I4 and V6 Turbos all racing in the same race. Now it has become a spec series, I do miss the tire wars and special qually motors that lasted 6 laps!

I don't mind the sounds of the new cars myself. It is what it is. Reminds me of Indy cars.

Have a listen between 2013 and 2014.

I would agree if it was the same spec, but I think the changes to the aero specs would have presented a sufficient change to potentially mix up the field.

I will say though with both the spec AND engine change, everything was up for grabs.

So far though, Mercedes got it right - both car and engine.

I think the sound argument comes up every time there's an engine change. I'm not that upset because I never really liked the sound of the V8s either, especially after they capped RPM at 18,000. Here, have a V12.

The V6 just sounds so...uninspired. Very "meh"

You guys are kidding me!! I was going to post the same video, saying "See?!?! The cars sound like GARBAGE!!!!!"

You think that video poster put it up because they thought the sound was decent??? lol

sound porn. love those v12's

Anything from the 1989-1994 3.5L era, or the 1995-2005 3.0L era were just musical.

I always smile when the prettiest cars do well. With all the relative-newbies in fast cars, and all the big names in sub-par cars, there will inevitably be more slicing and dicing this year. Can't wait till the reliability issues get sorted out and we get a full field karting around. It does suck that the cars don't sound as exotic, but it's terrific for the sport when 21 y/o's are now podium-ing while greats like Alonso/Hamilton/Vettle are comparatively no-shos.

I hope the mid-pack teams are able to keep up with RB/Ferrari/Mercedes in the development wars.
What I'm not interested in seeing: cars that have problems with Kers having the ability to duke with teams that are saving fuel. I've hated the no-refuel rule ever since it came out, and will continue to hate on. "Saving money".. laughs.

Things they need to do: re-air the 3am races at 8am for regular people. Re-integrate the graphic that displays gear/rev/speed/available kers ASAP. Off to the torrents to get the BBC-feeds that provide so much more information--especially their pre-race specials.

Battles I'm holding out for:
- Alonso vs Massa vs Raikkonen
- Massa vs Hamilton
- Kobaiyashi vs anyone

Anyone notice the Senna banner on Google celebrating his birthday? RIP, Great one.
