Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

I grew up in a house with two adults/two teens , one bath . No idea how that was possible.
I’m planning on redoing bath two upstairs , light version , new toilet and cabinets , tub/shower are in great shape and can stay. Basement bath is fine but I want to modernize the look. I’m shocked every time I price out mid level stuff and I’m at five g’s before a hammer gets swung.

Rubbermaid tub in downstairs shower works for a bit while you redo upstairs. As for money, make a list of stuff you need and dimensions, keep an eye out at auctions or clearance at stores and you can probably get many of the expensive bits for less than half price. Stage them in the cottage basement until you are ready to start the project.

Didn't we already go this this exercise with cottage bathroom? I think it's in this thread somewhere.
Good call! Next time I go up there I'll take detailed measurements / photos.

We may have...but this is post #10,282...and GTAM search function blows.

You're welcome to join me next time I pop up there and you can see how tiny it is.

Anyone looking for a built-in refrigerator there is a killer deal at the Home Depot at Steeles and 410. It was supposed to be a display model but there was no area available for a built-in cabinet so it was stored in the back. It was originally 12K then came down to 10K. They have put it out for 4800 or so now to get rid of it. Never seen the display floor, never touched by a customer, still shrink wrapped. It may be put in the back again soon as it is apparently 'front heavy' and may tip if the doors are opened (since it is designed as a built-in and there is nothing holding it down from the top). If you dont see it ask about it.

This is the model.....

I don't understand why that's priced over 10K. Make the fridge 10" taller, add a panel at the top and bingo bango you triple the price. It's not just that one, most built-ins follow the same pricing scheme.

No water/ice dispenser either which we use a lot. Looks pretty similar to our Fridgidaire Professional one we bought in ‘20 iirc was in the $3-4000 range.

Our previous house had one full bathroom and a powder room in the basement. House was small so no space to add shower to basement bathroom. I was mentally working out a temp shower as doing construction with no place to shower after sucks. It was going to be a knee high bin with shower curtain all around in the laundry room. For simplicity, use a submersible pump to empty it into the laundry tub after showering. It would have been cheap and easy and worked well enough for a temporary solution.
Thirty five years ago I was doing a full gut out that had the entire waste water system shut down for a day. Then something went wrong for a day. We survived thanks to McDonald's and a fantastic neighbour.

Upgraded computer speakers from old altec lansings (quite competent for what they are) to some JBL monitors. Much, much better. Caused me another issue though. They pick up some line noise with the current wiring I threw together. Need to keep their amps quite low so the crackle doesn't drive me nuts. Oh well, I just balanced outputs are now on my list of stuff to look for. Or I can make some nice shielded cables up. I may have enough parts kicking around from a previous life. For now, it works ok but caps out at ~80 dBA unless I turn the speakers up.

Are the monitors balanced input, sound card unbalanced? A simple solution is an ART CLEANbox, I have fought and loss the unbalanced RCA to balanced more than a few times (sometimes it is NP, others' need intervention), this or something like it saves a bunch of headaches when intervention is required. Not super expensive.

Correct. Sound card is unbalanced. Monitors can go either way. Disconnecting signal leads from speaker and monitor goes quiet. Slight hiccup in my original plan is disconnecting from computer and it goes quiet. Noise is in the signal so shielded wire won't help. Solution will likely be USB to DAC with balanced output. I know I have some really good XLR cables kicking around. I'm not sure if I have TRS signal cables made up. Cleanbox likely doesn't help this situation as it will pass through the noise.

Was there noise with the old computer speakers?

Not substantial but there are some systemic differences. The biggest one is the new ones have proper tweeters. The old ones were one way plus a sub. That automatically filtered some highs.
Did you replace the computer over the years but not the speakers and wires (until recently of course)? I've got a little feedback/buzzing in my speakers which I've had forever, with same wires, but updated computers.

The old speakers have been connected to a computer since ~1998. Obviously there have been many computers in that time. FWIW, old and new speakers are both 10K input impedance.

Not really unless you mentioned it. I still use a keyboard which is 20 years old, and my main laptop will be 10 years old next year. Still work well for my needs. I should address my speaker buzz issue, but it's low enough that with the other sounds in the room it's not noticeable.

Sealed all the quartz countertops in the house. Anyone sealing kitchen backsplashes as well? I’m worried they might darken a bit if I do.

I looked into it and info I found said don't bother to seal quartz. I used a car buffer to polish them and that looked much better for a bit. What is backsplash made of?
