And here I thought they were to be laid under in case of a fire..:
Think I might go pick up one or two.

Home Depot has fire blankets on promo right now . I’ve been in a fire , it’s rather unpleasant.
For folks that go buy one , take it out of the box , take the plastic bag off and have it ready , that thirty seconds you’ll spend unpacking it can be the difference between “ that was close” and holy F , get out of the house .

Thanks, picked one up (blanket) for the kitchen. They also had a small spray can fire extinguisher so I grabbed that as well, I already have bigger ones near the door and fireplace....Home Depot has fire blankets on promo right now . I’ve been in a fire , it’s rather unpleasant.

In a pinch I used paper towel as a fire blanket. No liquids involved so get enough wrap with pressure to snuff it out. It was far from ideal but worked well. Small secondary paper towel fires were easy to deal with. When I was in the boat fire , the owner had put the extinguishers in the cupboard above the stove . When the butane stove blew up I had to reach through the fire to get the extinguisher. It had been raining so I had full rain gear on that was damp which saved me , but the scars on my hands don’t tan in tbe summer .
If you buy a fire blanket make sure it’s big enough to wrap the cook , lot of synthetic fabrics go up fast , same for flannel. In a movie when they can run around a house on fire , good luck , it does not work like that .
When I put out the boat fire the option was over the side into lake Ont in the spring , in the dark , probably would have killed four of us .

Yikes. I would be replacing it with one I could disable without killing it (eg a button or app to put it to sleep for 30 minutes and then it would automatically start working again).Wife has an annoying habit of disconnecting the smoke detector at the cottage. More than once I caught the battery pulled out because ‘it’s more annoying than useful’ argument.
I always reinstall it AFTER she finishes her cooking.
Didn’t know those existed. But you are correct. It should always be on.Yikes. I would be replacing it with one I could disable without killing it (eg a button or app to put it to sleep for 30 minutes and then it would automatically start working again).
Not the best design (hush button should be easy to differentiate from test button and it only silences for 8 minutes but it's only $25). I'm sure you could find one better. Nest can do it but way more money (although it will also send your phone a message so you know the cottage is burning).Didn’t know those existed. But you are correct. It should always be on.
Thanks! I’ve got 2 cameras there pointing out but may add another one pointing in to see if all good inside. Not the best design (hush button should be easy to differentiate from test button and it only silences for 8 minutes but it's only $25).
