Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

Any recommendations for a 4-5 camera system?
Power over Ethernet
Accessibility to see what’s happening via phone

Don’t know much more than that, as I’m useless in this department.

I’m sure some have been mentioned before in this thread…but we’re on page 377…

I like big overhangs and cantilevers .
Have you been to Falling Water??
Good stop by on a trip heading south.

Those who don't know of it should take a guess when it was built.
There is a cool story about that cantilevered overhang over the stream.

Lorex works well.

I don't like box box store stuff.

I'll hook you up with a decent system

If you go to 5 cameras you might as well consider a 6th and possibly up to 8.

Recorders come in a 4 channel model or 8 channel model. You might as well use it to it's full potential of you can.

I toured the place with my daughter who is a FLW fan. The place is over the top.

Someone on the tour noticed a painting on the wall and asked if it was a genuine Picasso. The answer was "Yes. We have two. Keep in mind this was the Kaufman's cottage and they kept the good stuff at home."

As he spoke I noticed a Tiffany lamp on the desk beside him.

Wright was five foot six tall and the place has low ceilings and railings. The place was designed for the perfect man who FLW thought should be 5"-6" tall.

Ok. Let's chat when you return.

As for today's festivities....

#1 - put up some more flashing around the doors, and then about 7-10 panels of siding before we got rained out
#2 - at the cottage now killing a hornet's nest
#3 - installed the internet router and all good here at the cottage

Time to drive home as wife forgot to tell me we have guests in 1 hour....FML.

I've been there, and the houses in Buffalo, and his studio in Chicago.
Falling water from the outside and the location is great. Not very practical. As you can imgine lots of moisture problems.
He was quite anal about stuff as well. Bedrooms were undersized and not very comfortable.
Also the whole cantilevel design he borrowed from Sullivan in large building architechure while working under him, but doesn't work well in small scale. There is a lot of cramped spaces and awkwardness. Not that it matters to this type of client.

Can anyone recommend a good auger/plumbing snake.

My basement shower decided to back up and now is not draining. I tried drano, it sorta worked and allowed water to slowly drain. I purchased a hand auger from crappy for about $25. When I tried it somehow made it worse. the water is just pooling now not draining.
I know that doesn't make sense, welcome to my world!

Go rent one of the 50-100ft ones from HD. My dad has one but he's in Etobicoke and unfortunately I'm only here at the Scarborough office today this week. However...may not work great through a shower drain as it may be too small of a diameter for it.

We typically run it through the cleanout, or the basement drain so it makes it out as close to the street as possible. I have a small 20ft one also, which is better for showers / sinks as it doesn't scratch the sinks.

Construction details were also an issue. Regarding size, it's a cottage not a country manor. Again, FLW's perfect man mindset prevailed.

Darwin Martin house is a great place to visit but I found it too dark inside. Apparently so did Mrs. Martin and she called the shots on FLW's other Martin abode, the family getaway by the lake, Graycliff.

To restore Martin House they had to import matching bricks and have them checked for size and quality by university students. They sell the culls as souvenirs. I bought one and made it into a candle holder.012.JPG

Deja Vu. My adventurous post of a couple of weeks ago

I ended up with a Husky 25 foot drain auger from Home Depot. I can't find a link but the 25 footer would get me to the main stack and was easier to handle than a larger one. IIRC about $25 and hand cranked. Power ones are available. I'm west end as well. The job was slightly clumsy because I was working under a sink / vanity.

I had to pull the trap to get the thing to work. A basement shower doesn't have the trap options.

sounds similar to what I bought, which is this:

The length seems ok, I can get it past the trap in the floor and run it for some lenght then it stops, I turn the handle doesn't move any further. When I pulled it out, nothing was stuck or noticeable on the end.

I might have to pull up the toliet. The main is over that way and the shower goes that way as well.

You are probably hitting an elbow (or going up into toilet). A clog should not be hard (unless it's carrots).

You either ran out of hose, or got stuck in an elbow. Unless someone threw something very hard in there.

Try going from up to the block, and ramming it a few times lightly. If it's an obstruction it SHOULD let go. If not, try another drain...they all lead to the same place.

My recommendation is go to the basement, and run it both ways from the basement drain. Towards the house to attack blockage from another side, and toward the street to try and make sure that line is ok.

Might want to get a cheap endoscope off Amazon ($25). You can look into the drain for blockage or cracked pipes.

My guess is you have an older clay drain pipe. It's not uncommon for roots to make their way into those drains -- if so you need a root-cutting snake for quick removal, or liquid root killer if you have time on your side.

I do have clay pipes, but I don't think it's roots. the side of the house where the pipes are is all paved, no trees etc for several feet.

How well do those Suntuf polycarbonate panels hold up to our winters/wind? Considering using them in "Solar-grey" for the kiddos playhouse build instead of wood so more light will shine in. Would be 10x12 so 5 of the 12" panels would work well. 2x6 raftors with 1x6 strapping then those panels screwed down on top.
Tall point of sloped roof is facing east so I could use some extra 10' deck boards as flashing to slow the wind down on the front edge.

Roots have a funny way of showing up a long way from trees...not saying it's what it is...but...until you physically look, there's no way to be 100% sure what the blockage is.

I've tried endoscopes...but ones that can reach that far are not cheap.
