Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

The pool heater fan had a capacitor meltdown again. Seems to happen every 2 years or so. Spent a while looking for the spare and found it after I had given up it was inside the heater electric cabinet. Good to go again ordered spares from Amazon maybe a reason they are 6 dollars each.

I had to buy a cheap cap from the only place that was open on a Sunday, and it failed again by the next summer. I replaced that one with one from Sayal and so far so good since about 2019.

I guess an upside to me buying the variable speed is no cap failures to deal with. Instead I will be dealing with many hundreds for a logic board when it craps the bed.

So far the original lasted 3 years the first cheap Amazon one lasted 2 years and the second is in now. I ordered 2 more for $12 total maybe I will take a look for a good one but had trouble finding a 3uf last time.

Pool pump caps fail from overheating. ,pool motors working hard get very hot, add direct sunlight and it's too much heat for starter caps.

If your pump is running constantly,, make sure the rear vents are clear, no yard stuff (leaves, grass) interfering with cooling.

If the motor is in full sun, spray paint it silver or white.

The pool pump itself has a VFD and has never given an issue this is the fan on the heat pump

I'm done thinking about COVID. Time to think of what to do in all this free time! Since I'm stuck out here unfortunately....boo...I've got too much time to think.

The few things I plan on doing this spring/summer at the house are:

1. Install an 11x13' gazebo.
2. Finally install the drywall in the garage. Just found a nice drywall lift (I never knew these things existed) which will let me do the work on my own.
3. Install those Barina (?) lights that I got thanks to GTAMs run on Amazon a few months ago.
4. Maybe get a door cut into the cinder block b/w the garage and hallway in the house.
5. Build a small deck behind the house as I hate the stairs from the living room going down to the yard.
6. Finally go on test drives...but in today's climate...may not be the best idea to go find my toy car.

What are you guys planning on doing? I (kinda) almost wish I was sent home so I could do it but I know the repercussions of this.
How does your score sheet look?

Ok so new neighbour is a bit of an impetuous idiot and has installed a fence down the middle of a shared passageway between our houses. That’s fine, it’s actually on their property line and they can do what they want but this cuts off any carriage/delivery of oversized items to the backyard (the neighbour at the rear is a good friend so this isn’t a huge problem for me, but the side neighbour isn’t really thinking straight). Anyway, I figured I’d make lemonade from lemons and install a gate at the end of this fence with hinges attached to my house and create a nice new small private area that I can keep my garbage bins in etc. My plan is to attach the hinges of the gate to my house, probably via a 2x4 bolted to the brickwork. Thing is, I don’t want to attach anything to the neighbours fence at all so I can avoid any “hey, you’re using it, pay for it” kind of arguments. So I need either some fancy hinges that have significant tension to keep the gate in a “closed” configuration or some other method I haven’t thought about to achieve my aims. Basically, I can’t add a traditional latch as the latch holder would be on her fence post.

Options? I was thinking of a restaurant style hinge that opens both ways and has a tensioned close point. I was thinking I could also sink a tube into the ground and have a bolt style retainer there on the gate edge. That would leave the top of the gate a bit wobbly though maybe.

I’m going to use one of those “no sag” gate building kits too I think.

Edit: the hinges are also called saloon door hinges/swinging door hinges. I need one rated for outside use though if I go that route.

I suspect a spring door will blow open reasonably often. That is a lot of surface area in a wind tunnel. Not a huge deal for garbage cans but not ideal.

I would put a vertical hinged latch over the gate. Lift it up and the gate swings. Paddles on each side to support the gate in both directions when closed. Latch bolts to the board that holds your fence hinges.

Trying to picture what you mean. One of these guys? https://www.homedepot.ca/product/nuvo-iron-18-in-black-cane-bolt-hardware-included-/1001725680

Found these… https://www.amazon.ca/Double-Action-Spring-Cafe-Doors/dp/B01IRJS6EC

Pricey but looks like you can adjust the tension. Not sure if they are outdoor rated though. I think Lee Valley has a version too.
Those are not outdoor, these are https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B09YTLC165...d14f&s=hi&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9kZXRhaWwy

You can use a cane bolt to lock the gate. Just drive a 12" x 1/2" galvanized pipe into the ground to recieve this: https://www.amazon.ca/Heavy-Hardwar...=hi&sprefix=gate+ground+lock,tools,115&sr=1-4

At least in Mississauga, I’m pretty sure he can go after you for half the cost of the fence based on the cheapest of 3 chain link fence quotes you can find. May not apply to your municipality. Also depending on his personality, even if you don’t touch his fence he may argue that by installing the gate you are still effectively using it. I’d wait a bit, but I hate confrontations with neighbors.

No. I may have to draw something if someone else doesn't have a better solution.
The best solution is mounting a bolt lock on the fence, but if that's out of bounds, then a ground locking cane bolt is simple and will work.

I think those rules only apply when a fence is installed on the shared lot line.

If I don’t attach anything to their fence there’s diddly squat they can do. I made it quite clear that there’s a reason why the shared passageways aren’t divided up but she went ahead anyway so I’m going to make the best of a ****** situation. She hasn’t realized that if the neighbour on the other side of her house decides to do the same thing she has there’s no way she can ever get large items into her back yard.

This looks like the most straightforward solution. Also, pretty cheap.
