Dougie's latest plan

'Putting on my old man yelling at clouds hat...
Instead of building more road capacity we should look at ways to REDUCE the number of cars on the road.
Anyone who's job could be done from home shouldn't have to commute to an office.
HOV lanes are a scam and a waste of asphalt.
Our transit systems are the suck.
Lately I've been on the QEW/Gardiner quite a bit.... at 0530 it's packed.
Yes I'm in my car, but... I'd be on the GO train if it was 98% reliable

I found the GO train to be pretty reliable when I was commuting on it. More often than not if there were problems, they'd be on the way home. Which still sucked but at least it was off the clock

I like the idea of it. Traffic during ideal weather conditions is tolerable most days. Throw in some snow, rain or ice or poorly maintained tractor trailer that jack knifes and everything in the next 20 kilometre radius is parked or worse.

Feasibility study? We can’t build subways that are efficient and effective let alone live transit lanes. EV break down and fire in the tunnel? Access to deal with that little inconvenience will be fun to work around.

I can appreciate controlled transit like a subway but, I don’t see individual operated vehicles moving effectively via tunnels in a meaningful way.

We have improved work from home to reduce the need to commute and politicians and businesses are trying to mandate returning back to the work place.

Just build dedicated lanes for Amazon delivery trucks and we can reduce the need to travel even more! Jokes folks, jokes!

If we can afford to budget $150 MILLION on a few kilometers of bike lanes, final cost subject to extras, oversights and delays, why is a tunnel so ridiculous.

Something I don't understand in Canada, or maybe Toronto, why do tunnels always follow surface routes?
They have option to create a wholely new path, why no something with least resistance, but instead they want to follow the same route already congested?
For example in Europe the subway tunnels zig zag all over the place.
Who knows mabye they do follow the surface routes I'm just not aware of it.

Because a tunnel would cost hundreds of billions, take decades to build, be inherently unsafe and not do anything to improve the flow of traffic ?
By the time metrolinx is done with the few km of bike lanes, that comment may also apply. Sadly, every government agency has completely separated from reality with respect to budgets.

We have the technology, we don’t have the other things necessary to maintain the productivity. Some work needs an office environment and some workers need direct supervision.

If WFH worked as well as workers claim it does, employers would gladly save the cost of office space.

I was being sarcastic with regards to politicians finding 150 million to pander to a few cyclists. If the amount per pandered person was the same for drivers a tunnel might be feasible.

Of course the numbers are as solid as jello.

The Boring Company's machines bored at 1 mile every 8 weeks -- that seems pretty fast. They claim their new smaller machines can hit 1 mile/week at $8M/mile.

I think a lot of the realities of this have already been mentioned. It doesn't adhere to any meaninful safety standards, is 1 car in diameter (ol Douggie seems to be envisioning, what, 3-6 lanes each way?) and is of very questionable quality. It's also in just about the easiest possible location to tunnel in. Toronto is not flat, and there's all sorts of water tables to manage, not to mention existing infrastructure. What about the Don Valley, for example? It's called a Valley for a reason.

Plus, I strongly suspect that in typical Elon fashion, corners were probably cut and things like construction rules were bent or just ignored, and it'll be interesting to see how well these even stand up.

This whole thing is so far out in batshit-crazy territory that even the bats are giving it the fuzzy eyeball.

If Ontario picked up the bill for trucks to use 407

I don't know why this is often brought up as some sort of magic bullet to solve Toronto's traffic issues. Trucks are big, yeah, we take up space, yeah, but we're also outnumbered by cars many, many times over, and we go out of our way to maintain a smooth flow because stopping and starting over and over again sucks. In short, we aren't the problem. Every truck in Toronto could disappear off the 401 and traffic would still be jammed every day in all the same places, at all the same times.

This whole argument aside, it's just wholly impossible to implement anyways. EVERYTHING you use EVERY DAY was on a truck at some point. People have become so detached from their own realities that they don't even understand this anymore it seems. I've literally had people get angry at me for blocking their way in a parking lot or street only to see them headed into the very store I just delivered to, buying the **** I just delivered. Stuff doesn't just fall out of the ceiling at night into retail stores - EVERY store, EVERY little shop, EVERY business or warehouse or factory...EVERYTHING relies on trucks. So, how exactly is this even implemented? Do we only allow trucks at certain hours (overnight?) since this is the common answer to that question? Do you think every business, store, shop, business, factory, warehouse, grocery store....ad infinitum...can all just shift to taking deliveries at 2AM? Aside from the fact that the trucking industry simply cannot work that way to begin with. It's a 24/7 operation - what would be asked in this sort of scheme would be to do 24 hours of work in basically 7-8 hours.

Because of the easements required under the asset. It’s all City of Toronto right of way here so it’s an easy agreement. Add in multiple private parties and everyone wants their cut of the pie.

Remember that Europe was built many years prior and the subways could NEVER follow a primary road.

Also each line must have Xm separation from the one above. It gets deeper and deeper and each depth add a few zeroes to the bill.

Russian subway escalators are approx 200-250m deep due to the subway system.

I assume it’s just noise so he can call an early election and win before the federal election will be a win for the Cons.

It's going to be tight. Bloc is being whiney and says if the libs don't spend billions more how Bloc wants by Oct 29, they will start to discuss non-confidence with the other parties. Weakest extortion language I have heard. Another non-confidence vote tomorrow for capital gains tax increase. I wonder if libs will front load all opposition days as it is clear that bloc and ndp are choking on the libs under the desk right now. That keeps them safe until budget time next spring. That opens a window for douggie who said he won't call an election in 2024 (or did he say he won't have an election in 2024?).

I much prefer this…

I like this option too. The Canada Pension Plan is now the majority owner of the 407, when PP gets in perhaps he'll arrange to sell it back cheap as a reward for Ontario electing him?

Or maybe we tell JT handing over the highway will reduce pollution by reducing the number of cars and trucks crawling and belching along the 401. Frame buying back the 407 as a Green Initiative so it can be paid for with Carbon Tax.
