Do we need a different classification system for members?

If I blocked people who annoy me my FB newsfeed would likely be blank
OK, how about people who repeatedly annoy you, on a near daily basis, simply because, in your opinion, they're full of poop or spreading disinformation? Seriously, blocking 2 people made all the difference in the world.

One thing I'd like to see, is a bot that checks through Romper Room.

If anybody posts more than three times in the same thread in a midnight-midnight clock cycle, they get a timeout until midnight that night, plus midnight the following night.

To fix the work around, you're allowed two free edits before it becomes a post. Think @油井緋色 could build that in for us?

It would make people more thoughtful with their posts, and have them hesitate before pressing Post reply. It would also cut down on a lot of the repetitive trash.

First free edit: Sometimes I think there must be some special reward for post counts.

any of you computer geeks know if they make a breathaylizer for a computer, or one of those ignition locks for a keyboard like the impaired drunks get on the car?
couldn't hurt
Ask the alpha male....he’s the cats ass when it comes to programming. Careful as he’s got anger issues though... ???

Perfect if possible.

What bothers me is that I see very intelligent people getting dragged into tennis like insult fests. There are a lot of very qualified people on this site. It wouldn't be wise for them to post their actual resumes and employers as a poorly timed or worded comment could reflect politically at their workplace. More than one has posted negatively about a boss, co-worker or client.

If you read between the lines we have some very talented people on board on a wide variety of subjects but we have also lost some due to the aforementioned insult fests. A lot of intelligent people don't tolerate fools gladly.

If some culling of comments is needed don't cull the good ones.

Agreed.
I blocked 2 people, and I can't tell you how much more enjoyable GTAM has become.

Maybe this is the route that should be suggested instead of the ban-hammer.
Once enough people ignore certain posters, they will lose their perceived "power" and quite possibly slink off into the darkness.

Ignore the pests and annoyances. Make GTAM a better place.

Couple of things:

What bothers me is that I see very intelligent people getting dragged into tennis like insult fests.

There are many different kinds of intelligences. Being STEM-smart and knowing how to rebuild an engine doesn't mean you have the emotional intelligence not to be baited into a flamewar and getting banned as a result.

Totally not excusing myself here. We *all* have our blindspots about the way we behave and come across online.

IMO, the most intelligent people on this board haven't posted a single thing: "better to be thought a fool and than to open your mouth and confirm it"...

If some culling of comments is needed don't cull the good ones.

What constitutes a "good comment"? One that validates and reinforces your beliefs or world view? It's entirely subjective.

What isn't subjective are the current rules. Insult someone and that's an infraction. Cut and dried. Don't want to get an infraction or get banned? Then grow DF up.

Lastly, those actively moderating the forum are not paid to do so. It's a thankless job that *EVERYBODY* should acknowledge and be grateful for, because the tone on this board is fantastic compared to the sh!tshow that others have become because the members are given free rein to sling crap at each other in the name of "debating" politics, religion, etc.

It is a very big ask to a volunteer to play judge, jury and terminator on every single post with content that someone on the board doesn't agree with.

We're all adults here. Let's shift some of that policing to ourselves instead, shall we?

I pretty much agree with the issue being the last sentence. It's always the other guy's fault.

It's like the Dunning Kruger effect where people are dumb enough to think they're smart. They think the Dunning Kruger effect refers to the other guy.

Also agreed, the mods don't need to sort more trash. Consider recycling. How would people feel if their trash got thrown back at them?

Actually the board is a LOT better now than it was many years ago. There were legal and verbal threats tossed around till a group went out on thier own and created their own board which didn't last. Paul had a huge house cleaning. Some came back, but after a few attempts, they gave up. Some banned members are sadly missed. Reciprocity was a huge asset. Speedway was a riot, but had no filter and was a very skilled rider.
Ahhhh the good old days.

If we ever have a GTAM wall of fame, reciprocity deserves to be in the inaugural group.

I have no problem with that and I think I'm pretty good at towing the line. I'll debate something I feel passionate about but I'll do it tactfully. I got one warning here when I first joined because I misinterpreted the vibe of the forum. None since.

If this was just hardcore motorcycle talk, I’d not likely be here. I get my motorcycle kicks from riding and tinkering. This forum entertains me - I kinda like the odd squabble and the challenge of point : counter-point exchanges.

Agreed. Honestly, for those who were around in the BBS days, this place reminds me a little of that era where unlike a bunch of total strangers on a random group on Facebook...it feels a little more personal/community oriented here. We've all got to know each other a little (online at least), I've met a few members, etc etc. That's the appeal for me. The motorcycle talk, great indeed as well obviously, but I derive just as much enjoyment from the other banter as well.

Agreed.

Think i've blocked 2 people now, it made a difference.

As I said somewhere else, I wish the block feature worked better. I have a grand total of one person on my list currently but it leaves too many loose ends floating around where you end up seeing content that you're trying to avoid in quotes, emails, and even the "Hey, so and so posted but they're on your blocklist, would you like to see it anyways!?" links. And I'll readily admit that sometimes I do click those links (usually a result of an incredulous reply from someone else referring to it) and get sucked into responding when I see something that's so off the wall that it bothers me. Guilty.

But other forum software...a block is a block. It's like the person never existed. It even wipes out quoted content from them in other peoples posts.

Really? I don't think that's the solution at all. Lots of times, like others have said, banter will go back and forth on a thread and it's enjoyable. I'll use the EV thread for one example where it may be idle for days but then in the period of a few hours end up with 10 or 15 replies and exchanges of information and opinions on such.

The solution isn't to worry about people just posting too much, it's fixing the quality of the problematic posts, not limiting the volume of the non problematic members. And that goes for *all* the forums, not just the Romper Room.

If some culling of comments is needed don't cull the good ones.

It seems as if some people, if I'm reading things right, are lobbing in "people who post a lot" (guilty as charged) as being part of the problem, while on the flipside suggesting that people who don't post at all, or might post a few times a month, are of more value to the forum.

But the shitposters should be just "ignored" by everyone (which we all know isn't going to happen and in my honest opinion, isn't the solution) and left alone so long as they tow the line on not tossing direct insults.

If that's where we're headed, well, I'll show myself the door. :cautious:

Great post PP. Things can be changed when we get feedback. Out takes time tho.
One of my pet peeves is people don't use the "report" button. Getting a pm from someone that says "delete all the posts that i have tagged with an angry emoji" really irks me.
Or a pm that says "tell ****** to stop posting in my thread".
