To those of you who suggest to bulldoze the city. That's exactly what they are doing, completely fencing off and the bulldozing empty deteriorating blocks of the city. It will take a long time... and yes, it does look like a scene from Walking Dead. Pretty much all of their historical buildings are in ruins (train station, opera house, even some huge hotels and skyscrapers).

It's probably cheaper to bulldoze half the city than police it and provide all the basic services - water, sewage, fire services, communications, etc. Not to mention homeless people and gangs doing their 'stuff' in the abandoned buildings.

Forget the colour of their skin, they could be purple people flor all I care. Call them descendants of Africa. Descendants of Africa can't govern themselves. Like I wrote, no racial intent intended, it's just fact. Show me a successful country of descendants of Africa, run by descendants of Africa and I will retract my statement.

On another note (for those of the braver persuasion) this would make for a good group ride. You may get shot-up or your bike jacked if you're stupid enough to stop for lights or stop signs, but seeing that kind of poverty is an eye-opener and worth seeing. Sure will make you appreciate all you have. I would do this ride. They probably have some killer roads as well, and no cops to police them.
A forest has to burn down, (it's a natural occurrence) for another, stronger forest to grow. Detroit will be back. It may have a new and different face, but it will be back.

I am considering it. I would suggest you look at some of the roads in google maps, its quite an eye opener as they are really rough and in some areas the minor roads are barricaded and overgrown. It seems like an awesome place to rip around on a dual sport. I just dont know about the natives and Its just such a long ride to get there.
So you don't think it has anything at all to do with European powers ****ing the continent up at all? It's all down to the colour of the skin of the current rulers? Nothing at all to do with how boats would land and take people forcefuly to use as slave labour? Nothing to do with how the white man would land and decide that he quite liked the country and that anyone not white would live as second class citizens in their own country?
What do you think North America would be like if half these things had happened here?

Sometimes people have to take ownership for their own problems.
Sometimes people have to remove blinkers and look at the historical background to those problems to understand them. No pun intended but it's simply not just "black and white".
No, it's not up for debate. Go far enough back in history and our entire species are ALL descendants of people from Africa. This has been genetically proven. The human species has been around for much longer than that in Africa - a couple million years - but all of mankind from any place outside of Africa are descendants of a small group of people who left the African content via the Red Sea about 75,000 years ago.
While there is little question that Detroit has had more than its share of racial tensions over the years, the downfall of the city has more to do with the gradual exit of the auto industry from that city and the lack of anything else to replace it. You can blame the exit of the auto industry from Detroit on many factors - and there is no single overruling factor.
If you want to build an auto assembly plant in the USA now (or at any point in the last couple of decades), you don't build it in Detroit. You build it in the south - specifically, in a "right to work" state.
