Detroit Bankrupt

Aside from the jokes does nobody else find this very sad? This is arguably the epicentre of the american dream, families that worked hard in the car plants to make a life (lets not go into the union problems etc), Motown music....blue collar america. I'm pretty sure most americans are shocked that one of their big cities is broken.

As sad as it is there are probably lessons to be learned here for future generations. I wonder if anyone is wondering if pure capitalism has much to do with this.
Yes and no. Sometimes old institutions need to be torn down to make way for the new. The potential for the future (decades) is kinda exciting actually.

You're right I guess. This will shortly be an urban planner's wet dream.

I do find it pretty sad that a city would drop so heavily from a high point to such a low point over the course of a few short years. However, any city which is based on a single industry the risk is always there. For instance, what would happen to Leamington if Heinz decided to pull the plant? I do hope it rebuilds itself under a new industry, or finds some way to bring people back to it and rebuild it.

Rush Hour must be awesome

... yes that's my comment out of all of this!

This has been coming for a LONG time.

I say buffalo is next - on my way to PA, i happen to take the wrong turn and went through some part of buffalo that looked like a scene from the movie "Escape from new york"

Cleveland, Ohio.

They have an awesome waterfront but it's sooo sad, no one there to enjoy it.

With advancing tech and higher efficiency it takes much fewer bodies to build a car......people left. Not to mention its tough to compete with new companies/imports that have insignificant pension obligations and govt supplied healthcare. I think it worked out to $1500 a car for healthcare, and another $1500 a car for pension. Thats a big hurdle to overcome.......inferior quality in the 1980-2000 time frame didnt help.

Neither did stepping out for pot and beer breaks during shift. Probably cigarettes as well. Most porno was consumed off hours tho.

Man that is sad...I usually go there for the Woodward Dream Cruise every year...I guess I will see it with my own eyes in August when I go!

Detroit has been declining for decades, cant believe some of you are saying "cant belive its so bad in a few years..."

That place looked like a warzone way before the housing bubble, way before the dot.com crash.....

Kinda hard to collect taxes when everyone is on subsidized housing and living off the tit of the gov.

exactly, 20 years ago it wasn't safe to stop and get gas at night (a cop escorted my parents through town back in 91 when he saw them gassing up just over the border at night). it hasn't gotten any better since then.

Doesnt everybody coming to Canada gas up in Detroit first?

I've been crossing the border regularly into Detroit for over 17 years going to Mexicantown, Greektown, Joe Louis Arena, Comerica Park, Ford Field, Theaters, bars etc. Never had an issue other than locals politely asking for spare change. And everybody fuels up at the Ambassador Bridge, which is fenced off and well lit. However, it's suicide to stray off the main routes, and why you never consider stopping for a stop sign or red light at night.

Sad to see it hurting like this though, Detroit has great history and character.

The locals all knew back in the 70s- 80s what the outcome would eventually be.

There's still hope. They have some high picks in this year's draft.
